Toon settle for the draw at Pompey

Posted by Lee on April 12, 2008 6:59 PM |

Lee Ryder reports from Fratton Park

NEWCASTLE UNITED had to settle for a point on the south coast today after their 0-0 draw with FA Cup finalists Portsmouth.

The draw made it five games unbeaten for Kevin Keegan but United could have grabbed all three points after carving out plenty of chances at Fratton Park.

KK made just one change to the side that beat Reading 3-0 with Steven Taylor shaking off a bout of food poisoning to replace David Edgar.

Newcastle kicked off bidding for a fourth successive win while Pompey fans were on the ultimate high after reaching the FA Cup final.

The Magpies started in positive fashion as Oba Martins nicked the ball off Papa Bouba Diop and unleashed a rocket from the halfway line - only for his goal-bound effort to be claimed by David James.

Newcastle’s next chance arrived on the 11 minute mark when Jose Enrique bustling run and shot went over after he’d skinned Glenn Johnson on the left hand side.

Nicky Butt then caught Pompey napping with a quick free-kick which resulted in James – who was having problems with the blinding sunshine - slicing the ball away for a corner in a real comedy moment from the England keeper.

United failed to take advantage from the corner as Pompey survived a bright opening 15 minutes from the visitors.

Michael Owen won a corner on 25 minutes yet Portsmouth were let off the hook once more as Geremi’s flag kick was headed well over by Abdoulaye Faye.

There was though a close shave at the other end for United when on 33 minutes as Muntari’s cross from the left was flicked towards goal by Kanu and in a nervous moment the ball flashed just wide.

Newcastle though responded in positive fashion when Enrique’s pass found Martins again before a typical shot from the Toon number 9 went inches over the bar.

Two minutes before the break the home crowd were furious when Kanu’s effort struck the hand of Taylor but Phil Dowd waved away the protests.

The Toon defender then attempted an acrobatic effort from Geremi’s right wing cross but Taylor’s attempt hit the side netting.

United and Pompey went in level at the break but for Steve Harper it was his turn in the second half to deal with the sunny weather as the Easington-born stopper emerged sporting a cap.

Newcastle though continued to churn out chances in the second period leaving Pompey to defend in numbers.

Yet the home side wasted a great chance eight minutes in when Muntari’s cross from the left was diverted wide of the target by Jermain Defoe who fired wide with Harper rooted to the spot.

Pompey then upped their game on the hour when a driving run by Johnson was cracked at goal with Defoe somehow getting in the way of the shot in a narrow escape for United.

Harper pulled off a great save two minutes later as Newcastle were hit on the break and pint sized England striker was denied low down as the Toon stopper turned it round the post.

With a quarter of the game left United had a superb chance through Owen when a Geremi corner landed at his feet before his fine shot was turned over by the head of James.

Seconds later a long-range effort from Geremi had to be smothered with both hands by James again.

With nine minutes left Keegan handed Alan Smith a slice of the action with the England international replacing Mark Viduka.

On 87 minutes Martins found himself through on goal but he could only drag his shot wide.

POMPEY: James, Johnson, Hreidarsson, Campbell, Distin, Bouba Diop, Davis, Muntari, Kranjcar, Kanu (Nugent 75), Defoe.

Subs: Lauren, Hughes, Mendes, Begovic.

UNITED: Harper, Beye, Enrique, Faye, Taylor, Butt, Geremi, Barton, Martins, Owen, Viduka (Smith 81).

Subs: Forster, Duff, Edgar, Carroll.

Ref: Phil Dowd

Good evening Lee having watched the whole game that was two points lost rather than one won. If we had eleven guys breaking their necks for the club instead of nine and the ineffective Viduka and Geremi it surely would have been three points. The positives were plenty with the defence and Harper looking solid but i felt sorry for Edgar losing his place it gives the young uns a big boost if they get a run in the side. Barton and Butt knocked the ball about well and Martins and Owen both posed a major threat but Viduka and Geremi are just not up to it.
KK again is reluctant to use his substitutes and why when he takes his centre forward off does he not replace him with another centre forward instead of Smithy.
The unbeaten run is preserved and this will help confidence but we must maintain reality and these five big players that we are going to sign are a must to take the side to a top eight position.
Overall well done the mags just a pity about Viduka and Geremi.

I would have never thought 3 months ago that I would be disappointed with only a point away to the team sitting 6th in the league.

Bring on the mackems!

ALL IN ALL,another encouraging performance in that we were the better team, and maybe on another day could have scored a couple of goals, but i would have taken a point beforehand. This same team would have got battered under allardyce, for sure.My only quibble about the game was that geremi is no right mid,i would have preffered to see him swapped position with beye, allowing him to bomb forward.Portsmouth are no great shakes by the way, very big and physical, but not all theyre cracked up to be.....predictably,arry reckoned they were tired.I know this,if KK gets his transfers right(and i fully expect him to given his record) we will finish above them next term,AND shut a few mouths to boot. The london press have concentrated on how poor pompey were rather that give us any credit for the way we played, the guardian(again predictably)couldnt resist putting the boot into Owen for his missed chance. On sky yesterday, more gloating from old bignose saying our appointments of wise, vetere, etc wont work with KK in the transfer market.Even merson(how do they get tv jobs?)reckons we will need to spend 80million to even challenge the top 6!!!!mind you,he also said that the mackems player of the season is fatboy reid,hmmmmm...played about 6 games....never mind,i cannot wait for next sunday now,2-0 to the Toon, bring it on....HOWAY THE LADS.

It was a disappointing game for me, boring to the extreme except for intermittent flashes of good football -- and the antics of David James. There was more excitement in the Reading/Fulham game by teams who do not belong in the EPL. I think KK will have to teach Martens that there are other Newcastle players who can kick a football -- and score, too.

lee,

can you explain to me why geremi remains our corner taker when he can rarely beat the first man, and when he does he hits it right over the back. it was the same against pompey.
its a joke, we lose key chances because of his inability to cross a ball...granted spurs freekick was a belter.

You have to wonder why there's rarely a player on the near post for Geremi's corners. We deserved to win that one How Owen missed, I don't know.

hey!!

Personally. I thought that the game on Saturday was overall played very well (Bar Viduka and Geremi) They had many chances, but it was a shame that they didnt score. KK should sign jose Antonio Reyes and luis fabiano! Many thanks

It was a descent performance aginst a vry tough diciplined team with very good goal keeper. I have to say very unfair to pick on Martins by some of the bloggers when he is one of the few that really showed up for the game. KK does not need to teach him when to pass actually KK wants him to paly more direct football, I watched the game Martins and Barton were the best players on the pitch, you want stikers to be selfish in terms of trying to score goals. We seriously luck pace in midfield that is something we need to fix next season.

Shutting out Portsmouth in their own patch is a good result. The massive improvement continues. Kevin Keegan continues to get a good team spirit and effort out of the players - hardly surprising for the only Englishman to win European Footballer of the Year twice. Now if Kevin can get a few recruits half as good as he was, we'll be laughing. I was a little disappointed in Mark Viduka after his great game against Reading, but he was up against two strong centre backs. With his decision to continue to play for Oz, we'll need younger cover there next season. Geremi worked hard and won the ball a lot - he is more effective than many on this blog give him credit for. Now for some great support for our team against our neighbours on Weirside - go Toon!!

The performance was overall, okay...not too bad like under Big Sam anytime but not too good either.

Its good to know Pompey didnt win although they got a semi-undeserved point. Their defense is good, considering they march on front with only two players and the rest back to defense. We've keep them in their own half more than they did.

If you were to compare both teams, both are almost on par. Newcastle defense reveals holes again but their passing and attacking has improved tremendously. If you dont agree with me, I'm sure many fans would agree that under Big Sam, our everything was abysmal.

Truth is, if we didnt keep crossing over the line for a throw in, we've got better passing than they do. Enrique is mostly to blame for this but all's well, at least he didnt concede any goals to the opposition. Our ground passing is good, leaving Pompey in the dust but when we tried to cross, the result is bad as the Pompey defense is too high and physical for the strikers to handle.

Viduka have been unjustly made to blame as he was the only one to match the physical of the Pompey defense, considering two hulks guarding him. Martins showed more shooting than before which is good but he really have to learn some long range efforts if he tries to again. All credit to him though, at least he tried. His pace also brought us a few more touches too.

Owen have been good all game, showing reality as a captain. He passes, shoots and attempted heads and looked most likely to score. Of all, he still comes back to defend, something strikers dont normally do.

Taylor got a few misfits, as with Faye but still considered good level considering Newcastle's lack of defense. Beye relatively quiet, very rare occasion. It seems that he played more back this time, with Enrique getting more forward. Butt's been good all game, tackling hard and avoiding three match bans from 15 yellows. The truth is, if we get more tackles, Pompey would be finished. Barton and Butt link in defense perfectly but relatively quiet as with Beye. Harper wasnt really challenged into a goal saving effort, not as much as James though.

I leave out one player, Geremi. The African player who gave good ground passes and throw in's. Okay, pretty good display of performance but really would be happy to see Milner take his place. I cannot understand Geremi's position in right wing as he justified he should be a centre midfielder. Geremi, to me, made the most costliest mistake in attacking and didnt came back to defend much neither. His crosses in corners are all so terrible and humiliating. We;ve got plenty of corners but not one, not even one got correctly done. Our corners must be the worst in the league. Geremi cannot even cross into the middle for Viduka or Owen to head. His set piece cross is good, but why? Why must his crosses be so abysmal? He also lack of creativity but credit to him, can pass. The costliest was when he didnt fire straight away when the ball was on his feet. James was already too late to save that for sure and he let the damn ball flow to his right instead of shooting it with his left. The time needed for him to pass, cross or do anything is too slow.

Overall, good performance again. Kk showing the formation that works. Pompey was kept silent as with Defoe. Just need to get the Mackems next. Howay to the lads!

If Newcastle are going to continue with three up front then we need some cover for the muskateers. How about Ashton, Zararte and possibly Doif on a cheap to add to the senegal conection. Obvoiusly Deco would be class at the tip of a midfield diamond. I totally agree about a lack of pace in the team. With regards to Geremi, he hsn't been great this year but he hardly got a kick in two years at Chelsea. I think the perception is that given a good run in the team he may rediscover his boro form, where he was their best player by a country mile. Milner's a better option on the right but isn't he more productive further up the pitch as an out and out winger rather than part of a midfield three. By the way, whats happended to Steve Sidwell. Mabey he'd be decent as this summer's obligitory Chelsea reject signing?
