Three leave Toon but where does Keegan turn next?

Posted by Lee on May 6, 2008 11:09 AM |

The exit doors have already swung open at St James's Park with one game left of the Premier League season to go.

And through them go Peter Ramage, Stephen Carr and James Troisi - all of them with different stories to tell about their time in Toon.

Now with talk that Kevin Keegan will trim his squad down from 27 to 22 and bring in four or five quality additions to replace those seeking pastures a summer of transfer speculation is almost upon us!

Yes paying 3 Euros for a paper just to see that we've been linked with Johnny Foreigner and sightings of top La Liga superstars outside the Clayton Street chippy in Toon are about to begin!

Firstly let's look at the cluster of departures.

Ramage leaves under a cloud of frustration after a season of injury following a knee injury at Middlesbrough back in August.

Not only was this Ramage's last season before his contract expires but his injury came at a time when Carr was already facing a stint on the sidelines.

Ramage gave everything in a black and white shirt and worked under five managers after graduating from the Academy.

Yet some Toon fans will say that he was perhaps short of the required standard.

Given Ramage's positive attitude and pride at wearing the black and white shirt that could well be harsh.

But the facts are KK wanted Ramage to stay on only for the player to opt for the exit doors in order to find himself first team football.

Carr is a different matter all together.

Some fans would have got rid of Carr two years ago with the player's alleged arrogance there for all to see at times with a gesture at the home crowd hardly going down well.

However, talk to most of his professional colleagues at St James's Park and a different story is told.

For Carr is said to be one of the hardest workers on the training field and most dedicated pros.

Sadly due to his muted approach to the media, we'll all be left to make our own conclusions when it comes to the life and times of Carr on Tyneside.

Aussie star James Troisi has also left without the majority of the Tyneside public seeing exactly what he has to offer.

Some half decent games for the reserves were as good as it got for the Aussie winger but the fact that only Dutch side Roda were the only side to show an interest recently and let him go, tells its own story.

Maybe it's too early to start speaking about incoming players but lists have been drawn up by Dennis Wise and Kevin Keegan.

The early blow to the summer that was the Modric deal, last spotted round here at the Malmaison on the Quayside before a sharp exit to the smoke, shows that there's plenty of work to be done.

KK knew this was going to be a big job, a job that is only just beginning in many ways.

WHAT'S YOUR VIEW ON THE DEPARTURES OF CARR, RAMAGE AND TROISI?

AND WHO SHOULD KK BRING IN FOR NEXT SEASON?

I think letting those three go was the correct decision and maybe a few more should follow??? Think Smith should be concerned for his future at the club, Diatta will almost certainly go, N'Zogbia will be a sad miss but looks like he wants a move to London Village!

My concern is that we are yet to see what the new owner is willing to spend in the transfer market? Nothing in January and already missed out on one signing in Modric.

I agree with KK about the changes of breaking into the top 4 so the only chance we have is if Ashley seriously backs him with cash. Stoke are already being quoted as having 50m to spend so surely we must at least match that?? A couple of defenders, a creative midfielder and stiker will do nicely Kevin!!!

Fingers crossed for a busy time on tyneside this summer???

Unfortunatley the fans dont see what goes on when the players are training re Carr, all they are concerned with is that the so called stars of the team acknowledge their existance. £600 a year for a season ticket represents a large slice of North East income for the average man, at least they expect and in fact they are entitled to is acknowledgement from Car, a man who has frequently failed to live up to expectation, in fact a pub quiz question could well be "when did Steven
Carr play well for the Toon". Ramage I feel a little sorry for playing for Souness in a struggling team in more than 1 position, then under Roerder then injured under Allerdyce it has not been easy for the ex Acadamy player. Triosi I know nothing about, except he has never been mentioed as likely to feature in the 1st team.

As well as Ramage, Carr, and Troisi, we must show the door to Smith, who showed once again against Chelsea that he is simply not good enough at any position. He couldn't mark Ballack on the headed goal, and isn't a holding player. So what is he? He cannot pass, isn't a great dribbler, and lacks guile. Ferguson saw us coming on that sale. We'll need a younger holding centre forward, and a couple of quality defenders and midfielders. When you think - Chelsea had two 30 million pound players on the bench, you have to see what Kevin means about the gap. If anyone has a spare oil well or two out there, we can do it! Seriously, KK needs a season or two to show we are a competitive club again.

Paul Patterson wrote...

Graham, you say Stoke are quoted as having £50m to spend in the summer, that’s not relevant in the slightest as I can’t see anyone of any importance signing for them.

I don’t know what figure I’m expecting Kevin to get to be honest, I suppose it all depends on who becomes available, although I bet were making a saving on Ameobi and Carr’s wages already.

The best thing to do, something Kevin must have sat down with his staff and done weeks ago, is actually identify positions rather than personnel.

For basic cover we need a left back and right back- Aaron Hughes fills this in one fell swoop and I bet he wouldn’t cost much with Fulham going down.

Now the big job is getting quality in for the rest of the team, it depends on Kevin’s idea for the formation, if he’s going to stick with 4-3-3, then we need a target man and two midfielders, if he’s going to change to trusted 4-4-2, then he needs a left winger, a midfielder for cover and a target man.

If he wants to play BOTH of these (Ie:- in case one doesn’t work, try the other) then he needs a target man, a left winger and two midfielders, on top of the cover for left and right back. It really is that big a job.

We also need a commanding Centre back, but I haven’t a clue who.
I’m not entirely sure who Kevin wants rid of. But Smith and Duff are a MUST.

Target Man:- Peter Crouch- £10m
Left Winger:- Stewart Downing/Mort Gamst Pedersen- £10m each
Midfielder:- Moutinho- £14m
Left Back/Right Back Cover:- Aaron Hughes- £2m

My Surprise tip of the summer:- John Arne Risse- £6m

Total spend:- £42m

Now baring in mind every club gets £30m just for staying in the league £42m is nowt of an outlay if your getting in that quality- heck you could get Downing AND Pedersen and spend £52 and be done with it.

One last thing- if he’s going to be available, as a stop gap- Sammi Hiypia.

Paul.

I think that KK last night was saying it is and we should not worry about the players that are leaving as only rammy had any bottle and the aussie fella never played for the 1st team anyway.

Carr will not be a big loss, and i just hope the billionaire gets the money out and lets KK get on with it.

I hope the southern media lay off the fact at what KK said on the top 4, as he is not daft and he is just telling all the geordies what is going on and that should be applauded.

Smith and Dudd should go as the only goal i can remember smith scoring was in pre season if i remember right.

I think Duff has lost a bit of pace and i can see him heading back to blackburn if and when a bid come's in.

Sad to see Zoggy will leave as he has that special factor and we should all remember his father passing a year or so ago and he is a young lad and if his family is in london, I.E Nobby, then he should go and play where the family is.

Anyways on to recent topics such as chris morts comments this morning i think he is spot on why should we as fans expect our team to break the bank to sign players we cant afford only to run into trouble later down the line ?
I have no doubt money will be there i wouldnt like to hazard a guess at how much but i think if anyone thinks we are going to see anywhere over 50 million it's being vastly optomistic .

Its a shame but it will take time, i certainly dont want to see this club run into debt again and risk it in any shape or form ... of course i think keegan is dissapointed you could see it in his comments after the chelsea match but lets face it its a massive rebuilding plan going ahead and it has to be done right if we are going to stay in the top flight and push into the top four >

I think its possible but it wont be quick !

Charles wrote...

I think KK's comments made was emotional rather than dysfunction. Its not easy to see your team crumble because of ONE player...

He said realistically that Newcastle cannot be in the top four easily next season and I respect that from him. It isnt easy to see managers saying the truth and explaining the relevant facts behind them. Look at Big Sam, Ruud Guilt, Roeder and the rest of the 'bad' managers...the one thing that makes them 'bad' is that they aim stupidly from the start. Real managers aim the achievable and never complain after being sacked...

I rather be aiming top 6 next season rather than top 4. The chances are really too low to be considered at all, unless we get a huge, huge, HUGE sum of money from Ashley, otherwise its humanly impossible.

As for the defeat, I think the supporters are being a bit too negative out of one loss. After all, Chelsea is Chelsea. They've got huge sums of money, an endless pot of gold. The reaction from two blogs before that already is evidence enough. (Remember John Best, we are watching you...)

As for the sum received by Stoke City. 50 million isnt enough and even if they offered the entire bill, no one from the 'bigs' is going to join them. (No offense intended)

So, lets hope the Newcastle's cash is good. Remember, most of the legends we have during the messiah season are all from not so good teams...If KK can do it once, a good chance he'll do it again.

Here's my list of men needed...

Striker :Any all guy, physical and strong will do. For me it'll be Dean Asthon the injury flake that will play in and out with Viduka. (That way their injuries are lessened...)

Midfield :Any fast paced, young, and able to make passes and crosses will do. An option of making good tackles. My choice will be Bentley, Lennon or Moutinho.

Defender :Left back! Must have a left back! My choice, Risse.

Goalkeeper :Never need one. The only thing Newcastle is famous for is for their keepers...

And hopefully a few more youngsters from different clubs will do...

To sell : Alan Smith (MUST)! The rest can be considered...even Duff can achieve...

The thing that REALLY bothers me is that the transfer market makes us look like shite.

I HATE it that we have to buy the rejects from the top four clubs; those players past their sell by date or just not good enough – Duff, Geremi, Butt, Smith just for example.

And I REALLY hate it that they know they can raid our squad for the best young players. Zog will go to London, as will Obafemi. And who can deny them? At Arsenal, Obafemi can develop into a world class striker and win fame and glory. Why can’t we persuade him that he can do the same with us?

And I REALLY REALLY hate it that a mediocre club like Spurs can tempt our key targets from under our noses (the Israeli from Bolton, Woodgate and now Modric).

We will have to show everyone that we are serious and that we mean business by stumping up a hatful of cash. We need to keep our best players and make sure we aren’t throwing money away on wages for wasters like Carr. Any player who attracts the interest of Arsenal, Manchester, Chelsea or Liverpool is exactly the player we should be keeping hold of. And I am sorry Paul, but buying from the Liverpool ‘surplus to requirements’ list of Crouch , Risse and Hiypia will just confirm our status as also-rans!

Last summer was dreadful. The Allardyce transfer dealings were a joke, as was the pre-season. Let’s hope for a better summer this year.

C’mon Mike and Kevin, best or bust!

Heard John Anderson on the radio yesterday and he nailed it...When Keegan was first here, the Premiership was new and you could tempt players with boatloads of cash. Now, even an average player in an average team earns wodges, so they want something else, like Champions League footie. But, as Ando said, not only that but they want to be with a team that stands a chance of winning the CL, not just make up the numbers.

Bearing all that in mind, a UEFA finish next year would be an amazing achievement...

Graham Southern Toon wrote...

A response to Paul Pattersons comments.

I take your point that Stoke are not likely to tempt good players whether they have the money or not, but the fact is there are no figures being talked about for what KK is likely to have available??? This you could argue is a private matter for the club but then KK has made his feelings known so I am guessing that there maybe a problem with what KK wants and what he is likely to get?? That was all.

However, to then read on and hear you mention Aaron Hughes and Stu Downing, please spare us! Hughes was a great player for the toon but he will add nothing new now, Beye and Enrique will be fine next season, Riise would be a good addition to make competition for places and another such as Johnson from pompey (Although he is unlikely to leave them).

Then you say Downing, what would he add to the team exactly? We have N'Zogbia and Duff, ok the first may well leave but Downing replacing Duff would not frighten me as an opponent! He is a winger that cant get past his man, too slow and ineffective.

Dean Ashton is a must, but others have said Bentley or Lennon, and the question again must be asked, why would they come to Newcastle?? Bentley will go to one of the top 4.

We all need to be realistic, and hope that KK still has the knack of finding some fresh new talent that can shine.

KKs not a devious challenging chap who can do this, he is too much a nice person who believes in integrity and honesty.
Therefore in desparation he feeds cryptics to the press.
I firmly believe the owner is weighing up options to keep the club attractive to a potential buyer by not running up debt and prompting Wise and Co to seek out bargain up and coming younger players who are untried and untested in the most rigorous league in the world.
A dangerous gamble considering the state of our squad who will be a year older soon.

Newcastle United must change its ability to chose and buy players.

Sometimes its not the money, its not champions league football and most definitely not about names!

Footballers want to go where they can achieve and grow. For players over 25 can be understandable but what about players below that? Nani, go to ManU must be kicking his butt if it werent for the fact ManU gets medals and glory. He shows good potential but how many starts? Questionable. If he had chosen Newcastle, he'd be running the field day and night.

The answer is, and in fact will be the fact Newcastle can give one thing big four cant and that's a place to play and the support too. Look at R.Madrid. Full of big players, how can one youngster ever grow there is beyond me.

I'd say we buy the young and sell the old. Maybe a few good players will come by money or just the 'want' to play. Nobody expected Alan Shearer to sign for Newcastle.

And for those who ask why would good players want to come to Newcastle...What else? To get regular first team football...With Modric out in Spurs, Lennon will certainly feel left out with so many faces there.

Its difficult but still can be done. KK just have to bid a place in Europe next season and players would then consider Newcastle as a destination. Modric left us out because not only did Spurs outbid us (From various sources), Spurs offered European football next season. All we have to do is wait...In the meanwhile, get some youngsters, they would be dying to get first team football and Newcastle's the choice for them...As long as they're left footed...

Mort says KK will have the deciding say on a player, does this mean they wont take any notice of his wish list and just keep offering names to KK until he says yes? The tabloids will no doubt be offering their usual garbage, twisting quotes and starting rumours again. KK is an easy target for them.
We need more than a couple of players to come in. We let 2 first teamers go (broadest sense possible), ok they weren't good but if we had injuries we could stick them in. Only the goalkeepers are safe as far i can see, defence, midfield and attack all need better personnel. If we dont get the backing from Ashley we could struggle again next season. that answer should be yes because after the top 4 we have the credentials to be next and MA should have the passion to achieve this and the faith in KK to deliver.
The bridge can be made and MA should instruct his team to listen 100% to KK and earmark a realistic ceiling of money to use to get there.
We need to sell on if possible the international capped under achieving has beens and buy ten yes ten players using revenue from sales and new owner money spread over 3 years like other clubs do to bring a squad together who can compete with Everton....Everton who the .... are Everton exactly thats where we need to be it cant be that hard surely

I accidentally deleted my letter from yesterday where I made an impassioned plea to Mike Ashley not to humiliate KK by making him the butt of the southern press' jokes again, which ultimately comes down to the Geordie nation. MA has accomplished this already by ' sending ' for him to travel all the way down there for what appears to be a caning for Kev's truthful statement on monday. Boy what a rollercoaster supporting this club is. One day I'm ecstatic about MA buying our club from the previous hierarchy, then I'm depressed with big Sam, then I'm ecstatic with KK..... you get the picture. I had a nightmare last night, I dreamt that the takeover was a conspiracy to eliminate the competition for 5th. spot, which certainly would be ours in no time, with only Spurs being financially strong enough to compete for? MA's best buddies are Spurs, he supported them, cleared out all the Geordies from upstairs, installed only Londoners, brought in Kev to finally finish him off as a future toon manager, put unWise in who'd systematically wreck the playing side until the fans, unable to take any more, filtered away to support their families instead. Then Spurs would always be 5th. Then I awoke to the news that KK was on the Clipper heading south for a showdown with big cASH. Mummy, my head hurts, where's teddy? gagagagagaaaaa.......

it's good to see we aren't fickle enough to allow our feelings towards the manager to cloud our judgement or support of the team! ;)

also, not wanting to sound like the Big Sam supporters club, those who keep criticising the transfers of last summer should remember BSA signed Beye, Faye and Enrique who should all start at the back next season, plus cacapa and rozey looked good at first before fading away, barton and geremi have been important cogs in the recent revival, and viduka has proven to be crucial in the success of the new formation. yes, smith has been poor, and we'd like to see better players than barton and geremi, and all of those have played better for Keegan, but i would still view the overall ins and outs of last summer as positive and if we can be as succesful this summer i'd be happy.

Lets look at this situation sensibly, It is said that players will only come to England for Champions league, well if the top 4 that qualify for the CL have each a squad of 22 thats 88 players, for gods sake if your going to say that overseas players are desperate to play in the premiership are you trying to tell me that there is only about 88 players worth having? I dont think so, and then bear in mind each of the top 4 already have big squads so they may top up with 2 or 3 each that must leave a residue of class players available. So lets stop blaming the CL requirement as an excuse for not being able to entice players.

Come on, we really need to get rid of Smith & Duff, and I can`t imagine that Diatta stays either. We need better defense and more quality midfielders.
And no washed off Deco or Henry will improve our situation!
Have a look:
Veloso or Moutinho would be a great improvement to the midfield
Also think that Downing would be a great signing to the left, keeping N`zogbia will be hard but important.
A new left-back,Taye Taiwo should be a target, no Riise pls and Wayne Bridge is good but still another Chelsea bench warmer( How many more can we accept?)
To assist Taylor? Why don`t we take a gamble on a young talent instead of making bids on pre-historical players like Campbell (although he is great)
We would save money and build a great team over the next 5 year if we choose players that can evolve with the club.
My eyes are fixed on Kompany, Dawson or

And Mbark Bousouffa... You`re welcome at any time... Cheap, fast, technical and young
Let`s hope that Keegan get`s the wallet he wants for this summer and next year will be a hunt for top european qualifications!

I just hope that KK knows what he is doing.
He has earned the right to continue his work at NUFC, despite the biased and oh so arrogant southern based media comments that Big Sam would do better in the long run - these overweight, pompous Fulham turned Chelski fans could not have ever seen a BFS team play "live", they were hopeless.
KK has turned that round, now I think (hope) he is just squeezing his boss and cronies - show us the money and real ambition.
I hope this is just another version of "it's not what it was like in the brochure" - let's face it we need to really see what MA is made of.
Hope KK gets the chance to see out his contract at least.

I think it's fair to say the writing is on the wall for Smith, Emre, Duff, N'Zogbia, Ameobi, Cacapa and maybe even James Milner.

Owen, Taylor, Martins, Beye, Butt and Geremi are really the only players we have that have the class and/or experience to play in a team with top 4 or 5 ambitions. Milner would be a sad loss but in truth he lacks the one thing wingers need...pace!

On this I would personaly like to see bids made for:

John Arne Risse or Nicky Shorey for LB
Sol Campbell and Richard Dunne for CB
Ever Banega (young Argie holding player)
Jose Reyes, Joaquin and Deco for wide and central attacking positions.
Peter Crouch or Dean Ashton to compete with Viduka.

Reyes, Joaquin and Deco may sound a bit far fetched, but these players would all aparently relish a move to the Prem this season. Can't see the top 4 going for any of them at the moment so it's worth bidding.
