Keegan saying it like it is

Posted by Lee on July 18, 2008 9:13 AM |

Kevin Keegan has always done it his way, so when he vowed not to speak to the media until before the Hartlepool game - he wasn't going to be persuaded to do otherwise by anybody.

Presumably Keegan wanted to concentrate on working with what he had and there is at least a good nucleus of players to work with plus the new boys Jonas Gutierrez and Danny Guthrie.

Yet while that's all positive stuff from me, most Toon fans are more than a tad anxious over the lack of new faces coming into St James's Park - thankfully Keegan agrees with them.

He reassured fans today when he said: "We not only will add new faces - we have to."

Keegan though stated clearly he won't buy for the sake of buying.

Newcastle fans have heard plenty of names over the summer and truth is that they have been working down a list of players, although, the success levels haven't been high.

Keegan says that he's tried to get certain players and had players thrown at him, yet they were of the wrong age and the wrong position.

But one thing is clear.

Keegan, along with Dennis Wise and those other two blokes, has a brief to recruit "younger players who can stay longer at the club."

You can't really argue with that unless another Peter Beardsley turns up, but what are the chances of that these days?

There aren't too many local lads of high quality knocking about full stop, never mind ageing Geordies who want to finish their career on Tyneside.

Keegan concluding his first interview with the media by indicating nobody from the current squad will be sold unless he wants them to go.

Thank god for that!

Makes perfect sense to me. But let's see what he does rather than what he says. It may not be as simple as he puts it. We still need to have more depth (especially defence)and if he can't get young players or quality defenders - what does he do?

I’m delighted with the brief, but still think if we can get a few older heads involved, then surely that must enhance the squad also. Torsten Frings might be a great addition to the midfield, he would certainly be a better option than Geremi, he’s younger than Nicky Butt and, more importantly, isn’t in prison.

Marquee signings always worry me, Michael Owen was a marquee signing and were only just beginning to see his worth after three years. It would be nice to shock people with a ‘wham, bam, strawberry jam’ type signing, but one player I’m happy we haven’t been linked with this summer is Ronaldinho,- he’s past it, even at 28, he’s joined a slower league in Italy and that’s where he will finish- not the rough and tumble of Tyneside on a dreary Wednesday night in the league cup against Gillingham.

We’ve all speculated who and what we need, but I feel the obvious is a centre back and cover at full-backs- that is why I bang on about Aaron Hughes so much, it’s such an obvious choice, yes he’s 27, but surely he would be good enough for a few seasons- Remember, we are not Newcastle United 2002, blazing a trail in the Champions league, we are Newcastle United 2008, blazing a trail in the bottom half of the premier league.

The midfield is looking competitive and maybe needs that one extra piece, but otherwise is O.K. The attack worries me, lets hope Kevin has sorted Martin’s touch out, because he will be lethal with a good first one. But the cover for Martins and Owen is pretty shoddy,- a raw 19 year old and a 33 year old who always seems to be injured- Hardly the ideal scenario.

So in short- cover across the back four, a midfielder and a striker. After that, if we really want to push the boat out, we need a top (TOP) class centre back.

All aboard Kevin Keegan’s ‘Good Ship’ Newcastle.

Paul.

Dear God if I hear aaron hughes mentioned again I think I will cry. We need quality and Aaron Hughes isn't that. He's average at best and he's not the sort of player the club will be looking to bring in at all.

Frings would be excellent: good at defending; good at going forward; good at linking defence with attack. Younger and far better than Butt; better than Barton and not banged up; better than Geremi. What's not to like? But is this more paper talk on a slow day or is it the real deal.

Panic Over?

There are too many doom merchants supporting this club now.

Theres 4 weeks to get the 3-4 players we need, considering the lack of media know how on the other deals shows that the club are doing things behind the scenes.

Keegan knows we need a playmaker, the bid for modric and the 'supposed bid' for aimar shows this.

You don't need quality in the defence, so often we've spent big on quality defenders and what did we end up with, boumsong and marcelino. Funnily enough we had

hughes, dabizas, o'brien, bernard as a back 4 when we finished 4th, not much quality there but they we're together a whole lot better than the defence we seen last season.

I believe most of problems defensively laid at the hand of the midfield, which has been our problem area for 3-4 years now. They can't score, can't track back and don't make much service for the front 2/3. Hopefully with the addition of jonas and charlie into midfield, we will have wingers who can supply owen/martins/viduka, if they get service they can score 50+ goals a season between the 3 of them and that could easily get us into europe.

I really can't believe the 'bring back Freddie' garbage on these pages. Great idea lads, lets near bankrupt the club again. Bring in the 'glamour' signings we cannot afford and continue to ignore the fundamental problems that have dogged NUFC for years. People that claim we are heading for relegation with the current transfer policy are as naive as those who think we can break into the top four. It's taken as red that we will be watching better football next season but to qualify for the UEFA cup will be a huge success considering the mess previous managers have left this club in. Keegan and Ashley seem to have the same vision for the club and that is crucial but the fans also need to buy into it and I think this is the main problem. If it takes a glamour signing to make you want to renew a season ticket then whose failing is that? the club? or you as a supporter? Lets see what the next 6 weeks brings before we panic...personally I have never felt more comfortable that the club is in good hands from top to bottom. For those who have decided not to renew...just get match tickets when Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool come to town.

53 years since the last major domestic trophy is not exactly a lot to be cheerful about, is it? And now the club is run by a bunch of London wide-boys, and we are being outspent on signings by the likes of Portsmouth. Yes, I'm really optimistic that 'this is the season'. I'm also an idiot.

i have always been a fan of the best form of defence is attack, but if we cant hold on to the ball then we can't attack, and how did we attack like a free flowing ball moving from defence or a swift counter no, the old titus bramble kick it up on hope. we need a defender to impose some sense into the defence, KK started this last season but it is no comparision to the top 4/6. we need a player in midfield that can spread the play and come asking for the ball. to spread the play and let us organise. we need a quality player, good luck finding those two players who still fit into the bracket of young good luck wise et al,
Harry and portsmouth have proved that you need some strong tall defenders and they dont need to be young. Sol, Silvan, Hernan with the youth of glen.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, the last time Keegan was in charge he bought the likes of Rob Lee, Andy Cole, Phillippe Albert, David Ginola, John Beresford, Keith Gillespie and helped bring through the likes of Lee Clark, Steve Howey, Steve Watson, Robbie Elliot etc. I remember too people questioning Keegans signing of Beardsley as he was 'too old', or his sale of David Kelly and Andy Cole. Keegan knows best, or at least certainly more than any of us. Trust him!!

A lot of his signings were players who we did not know alot about, yet they turned out to be brilliant together. The youngsters we brought through hardly went on to mass fame and fortune as world players of the year, but together with his astute signings, turned out to be brilliant for Newcastle. In time, the 'top' signgings will come (Shearer, Ferdinand etc) but first we must be patient and stop being so miserable. I dread to think the reaction if we signed a Malcolm Allen or Andy Cole today, there would be uproar before the lads even kicked a ball.

We all know we need about 4/5 additional first team players in (and then it would be nice to swap (one for one) the likes of Ameobi, Duff and Smith), but there are 6 weeks until the deadline passes and Keegan has just agreed with every Newcastle's fans concern, so whats the immeadiate worry!?? We have been as active as anyone else this summer and as along as Keegan is having his say in the signings (which he certainly seems to be) then have some faith people. We dont need Ronaldinho's or Deco's for a Keegan team to be successful here. We need the full backing of the crowd and trust in Keegan to get the best out of players and find the next Ginola or Cole or Lee!

10/15 years ago, Newcastle turned unknown players into household names in English football not the other way round and lets hope we get back to that. Get behind the club and Keegan and lets start to make St James a place where teams are scared to come, where even Man U think they may drop points here.

Lets sit tight and wait for the signings. If Keegan signs off on the incoming players then thats enough for me and should be enough for any Newcastle fan who was around 15 years ago. For crying out loud, the squads of Everton, Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Man City, Blackburn etc are hardly brilliant and they have notexactly been blowing away the competition in the transfer market yet.

The message coming out of St. James Park gets more confusing every day --We are told the club has changed its policy and now seeks more and more youthful and up and coming stars --Then we are told " On the grapevine " we understand the club would consider offers for Carroll, Krul, and Edgar-where are we going here ? these are not the sort of youngsters -all talented and playing at various youth levels for their respective countries we should even consider selling-if we are so short of cash why cant we sell the useless Duff-or the wannabe in London Charlie before we would ever consider selling these kids -all of them look outstanding prospects to me and all of them want to play for Newcastle United -does that not mean anything -when we have a overweight centre forward who fancies about ten game a season-a midfielder whose legs have gone and another midfielder in jail-seems a strange policy to me and not a very sensible one either.

I think KK statement maybe another dig at the hierarchy to get things happening. Even with the two signings we will struggle next season. Owen will have his usual bad injury, viduka may manage as many as 5 games and the africans have only just stopped playing for their nations.

We got easily beaten by chelsea with KK in charge, with primarily the same team we have now. His outburst after that game, he knew we were way short of a decent team. He will know exactly what needs doing to make us stronger but he no longer does the transfers so cant portray his passion and ambitions to the player.
Thats left to wise and co. Probably, 'heres what we'll pay you for this long, take it or leave it'.

KK will know who he wants but those players will not be on wises list and therefore wont be targeted.
I cant see 4 or 5 players coming in before the deadline, its taken weeks to sign a loanee and a fella that bought his contract out!

Inflation, inflation, inflation.

The prices being thrown about for top-class talent are mind blowing. Yet it is the reality of the present game and the present market. 100 million is being calmly discussed for likes of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. In that sense, if we do not secure top talent this summer, we will pay more for it and lesser talent in the winter and next year. Youth is great but talents gets you into Europe and Europe gets you more money to secure the talent. I do not know the financial situation at NUFC but the money will only get tighter if you do not try to compete with the big boys.

As Rueben stated BUY ARSHAVIN NOW !!
