Keegan watches on as young guns are beaten

Posted by Lee on July 15, 2008 9:50 PM |

NEWCASTLE UNITED boss Kevin Keegan could only watch on tonight as his second string were beaten by Northern League outfit Newcastle Benfield in the club's opening friendly of the campaign.

There were no first team stars on show at Sam Smiths Park but Keegan watched on from the touchline alongside Terry McDermott, Chris Hughton and Arthur Cox.

The Toon kids went down 6-2 at the hands of Paddy Atkinson's side despite snatching an early lead through Ryan Donaldson on two minutes who latched on to Mark Doninger's pass.

Benfield quickly turned things round to go 2-1 up but a great finish from Jonny Godsmark levelled the game up at 2-2 before the home side rained in goals to go in 5-2 up at the break.

United managed to limit the damage in the second half with the final score 6-2 but nevertheless second string coach Adam Sadler was a disappointed figure at the end of his game's first work out of the season.

He said: "We're disappointed but we have to use pre-season to look at fitness not just performance.

"The lads though were disappointed to concede six but if you don't defend properly you get punished."

Coach Robbie Elliott? Okay, so you don't have to have been a great player to coach, but...

It is certainly not a good sign that even a young second string would concede 6 to a Northern League side.

Undoubtedly at all levels the problem will be the usual with KK, i.e. plenty scored but too many let in.

Yeah but did you see who they were playing? A team of gazzas and shearers!
Did keegan offer them all a contract at the end of the game?

Optimistic now on the coming season. 3 decent signings. Just hope we dont suffer again from South American Syndrom. If they turn out like Nobby however , then thats just fine and dandy

I'm the same on Aimar, Phil, but don't jinx it until he's in the bag! I've been waiting and hoping so long now for this signing that I'm not believing anything until I see the club officially announce it...it'll be a major boost if it happens.

I wouldn't read too much into this opening defeat for the young'uns either. They'll get things together over the coming weeks, I'm sure.

I wonder if anyone knows any more about the story I heard today linking Tim Krul with Chelsea. I'd be really disappointed if we lose him before he's had a decent chance in the first team. Both Given and Harper aren't exactly injury-free these days, irrespective of their obvious talents, so I'd really like to see Krul stay and be given a chance.

I haven't seen Forster yet, but I think I'm right in saying Krul has been waiting for his chance longer, and took with both hands the only chance afforded him so far, so that puts him ahead of Forster for me.

There's obviously talent there if Chelsea are interested, I just hope he hasn't grown bored waiting for his chance and wants to move on...especially with talk of a loan move back to Holland on the cards.

Another missed opportunity with Aimar off to Benfica. This new scouting team are really amazing!!
Can't say I'm sorry that Anton Ferdinand has rejected the Toon. Never thought he was good enough anyway - If he were he wouldn't still be blowing bubbles in East London.

Went to work tonight thinking we had signed a good player in Aimar only to find hes not signed and gone to benfica instead. How many targets are we going to miss out on. Just what the heck is going on with Newcastle United??? No wonder we are a laughing stock. the 6-2 mauling of the kids adds to the insult showing that the youth policy isnt as good as its supposed to be. what are wise and his cronies up to??? please someon tell me the point? this one takes the cake. when we really all needed good news we got a kick in the teeth.. thank you all involved for playing out yet another farcical scenario and ruining my night!

Aimar - I'm gutted. We could have had the most creative midfield player in the world. His deal with Benfica - just announced - is 6 million pounds over 4 years..i.e. 29,000/week - less than Steven Taylor. What on earth is going on at Newcastle? Message to Mike Ashley - get rid of the London-based clowns running the player recruitment and hand it over 100% to Kevin.

For goodness sake "get real". In the past united attracted top players because they were able to offer top dollar in wages, now that Ashley has tightened the purse strings, the biggest attraction to join the Mags has disappeared, so let's not blame the scouting system cos they are still identifying the top players only to be knocked back by Ashley....Come back Freddie all is forgiven.

It's because of the Fat Fred's policies that the club is in dire straits.

Good grief.
