Will Premier League defences get caught up in Gutierrez's web?

Posted by Lee on July 2, 2008 1:53 PM |

Newcastle fans have seen a lot down the years at St James's Park - but perhaps a player donning a Spiderman mask after scoring a goal is something new on most of the Toon Army.

But that's the procedure that fans can expect to see if he does the business when he pulls on a black and white shirt (or purple) from the start of next season and the net bulges.

Mind you by the look of the Argentina international Jonas Gutierrez's tally of five from his time in Spain, he has come to St James's to provide the bullets for Toon strikers more than anything else.

One issue that has been raised already is where does that leave fellow right winger James Milner?

Well, according to a good source, it leaves him right here on Tyneside with Gutierrez's arrival to help increase competition for places - Milner, apparently is going nowhere.

He made 30 appearances for Real Mallorca last term as they finished seventh in La Liga and just missed out on Europe.

But after a quiet summer so far Kevin Keegan has finally landed his first proper signing since returning to the club.

It might not be the Thierry Henry style figure that would have blown the house down and it might not have made the front pages like Michael Owen or Alan Shearer.

But it's a start and as far as the Toon transfer richter scale goes, it's probably on par with David Ginola's arrival in 1995 - and we all know what happened then.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Lee-any thoughts on how quiet this transfer was kept? Not a sniff anywhere speculationwise!!

Ryder's reply: A very slick operation from Kevin Keegan but delivered to you first in the Evening Chronicle

Now all we need is batman in the back four, ironman up front and we'll have a 'super' team. Ive never heard of this guy before and I find a guy that keeps a spiderman mask down his pants then sticks it on his face a little disturbing but its a signing!!

Hes a first teamer for Argentina so he cant be that bad. I look forward to watching him and hope he can provide direct attacking play with pace, something we've needed for ages.

Mask and daft celebration or not - I am just glad to see us making a move in the market at last - hopefully the first of quite a few required!
By the way Lee - where does he keep that mask to ensure its at hand just incase he does score ?!

Cant say Ive seen this guy play but a first team player for the argentines cant be bad can he?

Full faith in you KK, if you say hes worthy then so be it, I think we now have good competion for that right side, now please sign; a left winger, big striker, left back, young right back, a giant centre half and a creative centre mid fielder!

Oh and please ditch the following dead wood; Smith, Duff, Barton, Geremi, Cacapa, Viduka.

Many thanks, C'mon the Tooon!

How many of us will be donning spiderman masks to games?? The shop could do a roaring trade in these?

Hi Lee - I'm over the moon that Newcastle have signed someone under the radar for an 'undisclosed' fee.

I hope this signals the end of the of the publicity seeking we get our man at all costs grandstanding of the previous regime.

All too often the man was useless and the cost prohibitive (but for some reason worn like a badge of honor).

Clearly the manager chairman relationship is working just fine - the red tops must be gutted.

Gareth wrote...

Good to see a signing, even if no-ones heard of him.
Better still to see him comming with no ongoing press speculation. Does no leaks from 'club insiders' point towards a settled club hierarchy despite what we are lead to believe in some quaters?

Sorry Lee I read it at 11:15am, so you were not 1st, nevertheless good news at last, just shows that all this speculation in the press and other media about supposed targets once again have been blown out of the water by crafty Kev. Remember when he kidded everybody he wanted to sign Lallas the Yank, and ended up with Pillip Albert, no Kev keeps his powder dry and usually ends up with who he wants.

Ryder's reply: Sorry but you are wrong, the Chronicle was indeed the first newspaper to have it online at 11am yesterday on ChronicleLive and the first newspaper to carry the story.

Lets hope by all accounts that this guy is good. We need to give him some time to settle in and then hopefully he can deliver the goods. I just remember the press articles and ex pros with some afilitaion with the former club or country of the player that bounded around when Luque, Bassedas and other flops had just signed. SO lets just hope he is a right footed Ginola rather than a non footed Luque!

it felt great doing my usual 10 am check on transfers and finding we've made a signing!!!
this guy is class, La Liga's top scorer GUIZA plays for mallorca also and owes a few of his goals to the pinpoint deliveries from Gutierrez.
very anxious for some more top signings and the season to start now!!!!
UP THE TOON!!!!

wow!! its a first, we beat harry rednapp 2 a signing, lets hope he is one of harry's wonders for king kev to put on show, all we need now is a crouch. We need players in the same mould as Sir les and shearer to head those quipped crosses in, get rid of viduka for someone fitter. Guus Hiddink was write to say certain prem stars were unfit while he was incharge of austrailia and vids hasn't shrunk for certain.

frm the games dat i saw of jonas mostly against madrid and barcelona he always gt bak 2 defend and he gave the fullbacks nightmares. he mostly plays frm the left anyway so we could play him n milner on the wingers n barton and nzogbia (if they both stay hopefully) in the centre, dat wud be a greta midfield full of pace, work rate and strength.
