Ashley hits back with both barrels

Posted by Lee on August 8, 2008 12:41 PM |

Mike Ashley doesn't normally do interviews.

But in light of talk about takeovers, Kevin Keegan, transfers and exactly where Newcastle United are going and what he is trying to do, the dam eventually burst as far as the Toon tycoon is concerned.

Ashley - who has reiterated that he IS NOT selling the club - talks about winning things with United in his first real interview with club's official magazine and says: "If you own Newcastle United, the one thing you want to do is win something.
"Kevin wants to and so do I."

And while that may sound great in theory, the need for a big signing could be about to come in the shape of Fabricio Coloccini.

United need to a top class experienced defender and the fans have asked Ashley to put his money where his mouth is, it looks like he has with the Deportivo la Coruna ace.

Ashley has said he won't be stupid with money and so far the signings of the summer have been sensible and encouraging.

Too often United got burnt with expensive buys like Albert Luque, Patrick Kluivert, Marcelino and Christian Bassedas.

Nobody wants expectations to be raised to be followed by a non-delivery of success, which has happened too many times.

And while it may be early days two goals and a handful of battling performances from Danny Guthrie are perhaps a taster to come of part of Newcastle's future transfer policy.

Ashley has invested £250m in the club so far and while stories keep on coming out of possible sales to investors from far flung places the tycoon dismisses rumours saying the club gets approaches every month but insists it doesn't mean he is selling up.

European nights are also a feature of Ashley's interview and the need to get them back to St James's Park and compete on the big stage.

Reassuringly there is also a word for Kevin Keegan and that he will be backed by his board "If the deal is right."

All in all it puts unsettling speculation to bed and with three weeks left of the transfer window, who knows who will follow Coloccini.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

It's good to hear him come out and say something, but it still seems a bit strange.. Why on earth is he being so upbeat? Net transfer spend under his regime is still miniscule, and we have a tiny tiny tiny squad light in some key positions. I agree that Guthrie looks an absolute steal, and I'd much rather a team of guthries and bassongs than a team of luques and kluiverts. But we still have proven pretty rubbish in the transfer market so far..

I'd love to think we'll be back in europe one day, but having seen the Mallorca game can a squad so pitifully thin on the ground get us there let alone keep us there? I mean, do we even have the depth of squad to take on the carling cup this season!?

I guess what I'm saying is that I like most fans am realistic and am happy to wait a cpl of seasons for thigns to recover fully. But for him to be coming out with quotes like 'we're going to have fun' this season suggest he's pretty out of touch with the avg supporter?

I suppose that Mr Ashley like many of us has been quietly biding his time. He has felt no need to "defend" his position because as usual the vessels making most noise are of course empty!
We should be calm and take a realistic approach to what is happening at our club, no fanfares, no wild promises and no panic buying. Is this not refreshingly reassuring when compared to our recent history, I think it is?

Hi Lee,

I think Mr Ashley should sell as he wants to sell Alan Smith and KK does not...

He is looking to sell and quicker the better as far as i am concerned.

Out get out man.

Wow, well played yesterday lads, against a good side as well. Can you imagine a fit Toon, with Owen on fire and a few more ''good'' signings? This display will hopefully allay the fears of the pessimists in our midst. What with Big Mike's statement about there being money for KK ( assuming that KK is allowed to ''choose'' a player he likes that is, ahead of Morcombe and Wise ), saddenly fings downt look sow baird ( that's my cockney accent ). Spiderman and Guthrie are definitely quality signings, and Coloccini's reputedly a sound centre half in the mold of Woodgate, but without injury the whole of last season I hear. Don't be shocked lads, if Ashley snatches Arshavin from under the dawdling Spurs' nose, or some other marquee signing, now that would have Geordieland in ecstacy. p.s. I don't believe that Rooney won't be playing next week, Fergie's psych, maybe even Ronaldo.

People relly need to give Mike Ashley a chance here, who has he actually spoke to, no-one apart from the club magazine, and i've read it. He speaks a fair bit of sense, he's not looking to sell the entire club but he does want north east investors to take on some of the financial burden. The money for Keegan is there if required, but rather than just buy players for the sake of numbers they are loking for players who WANT to come to the toon, and not those who WANT a big pay day.
And Ronnie Lambert, you're not the first person i've heard mention Arshavin, although personally I can't see it, but mark my words Keegan is going to pull one hell of a sized rabbit out of the hat before the end of the window.
So for my 2 cents its this, Ashley wants to see Newcastle succesfull, but he knows this isn't going to happen overnight, Keegan is in charge of transfers, Wise is there for young player recruitment, All stories in the sun is utter cr@p, Ashley did want shot of Barton & Smith but Keegan has the final say, and he's said they're staying.
A good start will get the toon flying, and with some new additions to bolster the team we'll be ok
Keep the Faith
