Time to lift it boys!

Newcastle return to St James's Park against PSV Eindhoven tomorrow night determined to give their fans a decent show.

The trip to Majorca has had plus points and minuses but as Steve Harper quite rightly said after the game on Sunday against the La Liga side that even if Newcastle had won the tournament, that would be of no consolation if Newcastle are mauled at Old Trafford.

And while we all know that the trip to take on Man United is daunting, the players are hardly likely to come out and say we can't or won't win - they have to stay positive and using the trip to Majorca as a measuring stick, I'd say they are confident of making a good start to the new season.

True, Newcastle may not have spent too much in the transfer market but with three in and one more to come at least, once Man U and Arsenal away are done and dusted you don't know.

Judgements on the team, the Mike Ashley era and whether Kevin Keegan can repeat his magic, have to wait.

The team at Old Trafford could be: Given/Harper, Beye, Coloccini, Taylor, N'Zogbia, Gutierrez, Butt, Milner, Duff, Owen, Martins.

There are much worse teams in the Premier League than that and if this is the team that gets a regular run, United can do much better than last term.

Yet you have to accept that starting with PSV, United fans need to see some evidence of that.

Nobody is living in cloud cuckoo land and without making excuses, the heat in Mallorca made it impossible for Newcastle to get any type of momentum going.

Had Newcastle tried to play like they did in the better games last season, you know the 150% frantic pace of Spurs (4-1), Reading (3-0) and Sunderland (2-0), then they'd have lasted five minutes, it was hard enough standing still never mind playing football.

But in the cooler Tyneside air and on home soil, a change in results could start in PSV to help the players keep their current positive state of mind.

ARE YOU GOING TO THE PSV GAME? WHAT'S YOUR OPINION?

Hi Lee - For many a year NUFC have had a good first eleven names but we need to remember football is played on grass not paper.

As you say our first 11 are much better than some in the league. I'm not so sure about our first 20 though.

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking there is still work to be done in making up the numbers.

N`Zogbia as a left back are you crazy ?
Havent you seen him play there, totally out of his depth, except when attacking.
No wonder the kid wants to leave.

no Scotty you're not,

What anyone sees in his game I don't know.

He's industrious, hard working ... sure, & he runs forever ... yes, but he can't make a clever defence splitting pass and never scores.

His contribution therefore is lots & lots of ...... ermmmmmmmmmm running around in circles?

Faster we're rid the better.

We need to sign a few quick.
Last seasons squad was small but this season ... it really is paper thin.

Ashley splash the cash or get out of toon!!! We need Pace ... pronto

Butt Geremi & Smith in midfield are going to get slaughtered

No u r not being unfair. Take the 1.5m for Smithy.
Ok its a loss but look at the salary we are paying him. He is ineffective
Cut our losses .... before its too late

I can't imagine why we'd play N'Zogbia at left back other than because we haven't signed a better option.

The non-signing of Risse is coming home to roost now, because he was cheap, great quality and could attack with pace. Sadly we missed the boat.

Chuck- Viduka won't play until September so he's out. Scotty- I dream that a club shows interest in Alan Smith every five minutes. Here's hoping.

Finally heres a sly one for everyone to comment on- How about attempting to sign Morten Gamst Pedersen and Roque Santa Cruz for £25m a sure fire way of giving our attack a bit of bite, saldy I can't see this board splashing that kind of money. . . . ?

Lee -- For years now we've had a good team on paper when everyones injury free.Sadly that hasn't been the case very often and hence one of the reasons why we have constantly underachieved.
Looking at your team you have 3 names in there which I believe have become frustratingly underachievers; Zog,Milner and Duff.
All 3 of them are so promising in that they regularly go on runs beating 2-3 men and it looks like something will happen as an end product. But they all suffer from the same problem -- there are very very rarely any chances created. Either they run into trouble, or the final ball is rubbish or the final cross is poor. I've sat with the lads week after week starting to get out of my seat then having to sit back down again very quickly. These 3 players could be pivotal in any NUFC success this season as there is no doubt they all have ability but something always goes wrong in the delivery of the end product.Other people must have noticed this from these 3. Is it worth persevering or have they all reached the limit of their ability and none are able to improve any further? Maybe Jonas will be able to inspire them to achieve that extra mile and we have a helluva season -- Here's hoping.

Scotty, YES! Take smith, givel Carroll a fighting chance to show what he can do! Pick up one young, skilled midfielder who can creatively distribute the ball and we're on to something. Let's take it to Man Who(?)!

lee,
Only if it's 3-5-2, zogs not a full back but him and milner are fit enough for wingbacks and habib can play in the middle. That would free up jonas and duff to get forward.

I'd accept 1.5m for smith. Our first choice 4 are Viduka / Carrol Martins / Owen . I'd like to see us get rid of smith and his 40k wage (or whatever it is) and buy a couple of championship strikers and give them a chance. Look at Darren Bent, Dave Kitson K.Jones etc. We always go for so called big player but i would love to see us 'waste' 1-2m on Freddy Eastwood for instance (he's gone to coventry for christ sake!) - give him a chance, if he's rubbish he cant be worse than smith and his wage is 1/4 too and we could easily sell him back to a championship club at 3/4 we paid. Sell Smith, get Ebay-Banks or Jason Scotland in for 1m and let them be our rubbish back up - we might be pleasantly surprised.

It gets worse the more you think about it.Thankfully Man.U. will be without ROONEY & RONALDO, for the opener but that will not be enough to save the club from humiliation, if they got a player sent off; that might balance things up.We live in hope , that COLLOCiNI, might be on board but you cant throw players straight into the Premiereship !!! I have never faced a season with so much trepidation. Ashley has a lot to answer for and as I have said on here many times; he will sell to the highest bidder..What a way to start a season, it could only happen at NUFC.

We all know we need players, and top quality players at that. But im not so sure that our squad is weaker than it was last season. Look at who has left?

Carr - rubbish and never fit and never played, which was a benefit really as he was useless

Ramage - injured all last season, played twice or something

Traosi - Never played, never looked like playing

Rozenhal - missed six months of season. fairly poor when he was here.

Diatta - played 1 or 2 games.

Emre - good player but never fit. How many 90 mins did he complete?

Out of all these players, the only 'miss' will be Emre, but even then he missed so many games that will we really miss him?

Our squad is weak, but it has not been weakened this summer.

For me, we only lost emre of any note but have brought in guthrie, bassong and jonas, all of whom will hopefully be available week in week out.

Now if we can sign another 4 players (real quality players) i think that we will do well - challange top 8. Things will happen in the next few weeks, everton will sign people, blackburn, portsmouth, tottenham, man city etc will sign people and so will newcastle.

Colocini would be a great addition. if we could get in another 3 (possibly 4) players and tie Michael Owen down to a contract then we will have a very very positive rebuilding summer.

It is essential however, that we sign a creative midfielder. I'd also like to see a holding/central midfielder with a bit of pace and skill (someone like Diarra at portsmouth) to replace butt/geremi in time and another full-back. A new reliable centre forward would be useful too.

You are saying there is no money or Ashley wont spend the money but we had £17m on the table for Modric who nearly signed and actually was on tyneside to sign and are spending £10m on collocini (and thats not because we didnt get modric as they are completely different players who play different positions).

As for missing out on Riise. rubbish. The guy is past it and £5m is not cheap for a player who has struggled for form these past 2/3 years. That would have been a typical Souness type signing under shephard. Over paid and no end product. And if he did play, it would only hinder the development of enrique who for me looks a promising young full back with a good attitude.

All in all, my point is that it is not all doom and gloom. Cheer up and get behind the team. We, the fans can effect the results we get, so get behind the players and club and lets make st james a fortress again.

Well its looking good so far, NO Rooney, NO Ronaldo, NO Nani ( suspended), Carrick sick, hey you never know we might end up playing ManU reserves, and then of course we still get twanked!....Hope the lads enjoyed their jolly jaunt to Spain, but tell me why all the complaints and excuses about the weather there?. Surely they knew this in advance of going to a country like Spain in mid-summer??!!. Current side looks terribly imbalanced, with big questions over fitness for some key players. We SHOULD be starting the season with our best team/players, but clearly we will not. What hope do we have of competing with such a small squad when players are already injured/out before the season even gets going?.....Toon heading down Im afraid while Sunlun go from strength to strength with some really good premier league standard players....and yes I AM a Toon supporter!......

Smith has to go and the papers say Everton are willing to pay 3m for him!!! I would be driving him down for his medical today if I were Keegan!!
He was a class act with Viduka at Leeds but Man U put him in midfield and he has never been the same player since.

Things aren't looking that great at the moment, we are not the only team that aren't splashing the cash but the likes of Everton and Villa don't have squads as small as ours.

Surely KK is banging on Ashley's door and saying we will not be having any 'fun' this season if you don't let me spend some money! A full back, creative midfielder and another forward are a must, with the injuries that Owen and Viduka get.

Shorey would be good enough competition for Enrique, Moutinho and an outlandish bid for Eto'o?!!!

FrankW wrote...

I, like many others I suspect, are looking forward to the new season with some sense of foreboding. The Newcastle board are reluctant to spend their money (and why should they if they are thinking of selling up?) and have stated the case for developing our own talent. Promising youngsters from Italy,Hungary,Holland and around the UK have been signed to bolster the talent already present in our Academy. But what hope have any of the kids in the Academy got of graduating up to the first team under Keegan ? The answer must be virtually none because Keegan appears to have no interest whatsoever in the development of the kids and spurns any chances he has to give them first team experience.
Last season, once Newcastle's Premier League status had been assured and it was mathematically impossible for us to go down he had the perfect opportunity to "blood" some of the youngsters in situations where there was minimal pressure and nothing to lose. Instead of grasping this opportunity we had the ludicrous situation where Viduka was being patched up and sent out to play and Andy Carroll was left on the bench and couldn't get a game. Other usefull Academy/reserve teamers couldn't even get on the bench. Last weekend when we were without Viduka,Owen.Martins,Ameobi,Carroll in a meaningless friendly at Mallorca, one Academy player (Donaldson) got 20 minutes whilst three other forwards, Godsmark,Donninger and Danquah sat on the bench throughout as they have, more or less throughout our pre-season schedule against Doncaster, Hartlepool,Darlington etc. With little or no movement on the transfer front, especially for midfielders or forwards why haven't these players, and others, been given a chance to show what they can do ? Contrast this with Arsenal who played against Juventus and Real Madrid last weekend with teams packed with their youths and Boro beating Darlington 5-0 last night with a load of youths in the team. Arsenal and Boro have excellent records in developing talent from within. Newcastle, under Keegan, never have and never will. Why not close the Academy ? This will save money but, more importantly, Newcastle will stop conning kids that they might eventually make the big time at Newcastle when obviously they won't and the kids can further their education, football or acedemic, somewhere else, somewhere where they have at least some chance of making it. As long as Keegan is in charge they have no chance at Newcastle.

I hope to all that is good and holy that the Everton rumours are true, and from the sounds of it, there'll be no shortage of volunteers to taxi him down to Goodison!

The club are so frustrating at the moment. We only need a couple of really good signings and we're not asking for £25m Berbatovs or £20m Keanes.

Ashley says he wants young, quality players who aren't over the hill and seeking a final pay-day. That's fine. But to secure young and quality players you have to spend higher amounts on transfer fees. It's just the way it is. Classic case is Jaoa Moutinho. Everton seemingly want him but can't afford more than the £11.8m they've offered. Two weeks have passed since that bid, meaning ample time for us to have offered them a value closer to what they're after, and if he's willing to go to Everton, surely he'd come here.

Another example, Van der Vaart joined Real yesterday for £11-12m or so. I'm not suggesting we had a chance with him, but I'm saying that getting young players of the real first team quality we need doesn't come cheap.

Sky Sports are linking us with a full back who is only expected to be a Toulouse reserve this season...surely this isn't true. I'd much rather give the young players who never get more than a sniff of the first team the chance to develop than sign players of this calibre.
