We don't do straight forward!

By Lee Ryder on Aug 26, 08 11:25 PM

Even when Newcastle United went 2-0 up at the Ricoh Arena there must have been part of you that thought the game was far from over and as ever the Magpies didn't let anybody down against Coventry.

True to form, United handed Clinton Morrison a written invite to get the Sky Blues back into the game and then just because there was nothing better to do in Coventry on a Tuesday night, the Mags gave Scott Dann the chance to force extra time.

And even though the PA announcer at Coventry welcomed fans to the Ricoh Arena casino after the game United had already gambled and won when Michael Owen came off the bench to win it.

Despite the stress levels and the drama, a place in the third round was eventually in the bag and even though and as the players headed from the stadium for their flight home, the relief was evident.

A nice home draw would do the trick in the next stage but nobody will be holding their breath.

Nevertheless Newcastle are still unbeaten this season but before you get carried away, they were in exactly the same place this time last year.

A win, a draw and a place in the Carling Cup third round.

The jury is surely still out?

Yesterdays line up was a message to Ashley that we need more depth. It is very evident that we need a striker, a holding midfield player and a full back. I will be slightly worried if two signings of proven quality don't come in before the window closes. Lets hope todays meeting is productive!

Great result last night. Very unfortunate not to win it in 90 as we effectively played them off the park for most of it. As usual though it is never dull and we conspired to make it difficult.

Couple of things from last night...

Why oh why is Enrique not starting at left back, he looks strong on the ball and in the tackle. Got forward got back. Great ball for Owen's goal. Also the Zog looked like a different player at left mid. surely this has to be a better solution.

Bassong also looks like a player, very quick, strong and compossed, he left Mifsud for dead at one point. Confident he can step in when we need him.

If Geremi had given the ball away one more time yesterday the TV was out the window. I'm sure Keegan and Terry Mac were asking themselves how he ever played for the Galactico's. His passing was ridiculously poor and his dead ball delivery is average at best. I seriously think he has trouble connecting with a moving target. Has anyone ever checked his eye sight???

Milner is a class act - Chris Waddle mark II. We can not sell him, end of!!!!!!

We also need bodies and quickly, will be interesting to see what happens at the big meeting this afternoon.

No doubt we will get Chelsea or Man U away in the next round but all in all it was encouraging.

the strength of newcastles squad is ridiculous in it's size, even a tight wad like ashley must see this and release some funds for 2 or 3 players before its to late, to wait till xmas window never works, players take time to fit in

KK has done wonders with this team already, but now he needs backing in the transfer market by MA.
If we dont get some more players in ie striker, attacking midfielder, Left Back then we can forget about top 6 finish this season.
Allardyce should hang his head in shame after this lesson in football management by King Kev.:D

Just a point about last night- If a player scores and then leaves the pitch to celebrate, he gets booked, so why are players who take throw ins allowed to dismantle the stadium and run half a mile before taking it eh?

I am in two different camps on last night

1.- Why did the referee play four added minutes instead of the allotted two?
2.- Why did we lose concentration in the 94th minute anyway?

The simple answer is- Who cares, we are through, but we need to be able to kill teams off- a top side would have scored more than the two we did, after all we had Coventry on the rack for LONG periods and we only managed two scruffy goals.

On the other side, we had no strikers on the pitch till Owen popped in and we still managed to score two goals, so it can’t be bad. Shay Given again made a few vital stops and there was some assured defending at times, even with at least two people who can’t speak English in the back four (Bassong and Collocini)

Quality always comes through and Owen must be writing his own cheque at the minute for his new contract, something which, if you consider we have Barton (£60k a week) Smith (£60k a week) Duff (£60k a week) and Ameobi (£30k a week) Owen’s demands must be chicken feed.

On the transfers side, we NEED three players minimum, not for ideology, we NEED them, pronto.

Nobody commented on my last post, where I said that getting Emile Heskey would be my choice, so I’m going to say it again. ‘Get Emile Heskey’ he has never been a favourite of mine, but his record when played with Owen was always good, he’s physical, strong, quick, not a bad lad, stays fit and he won’t cost a fortune (Like a Berbatov for example)

Is he better than Ameobi, is he better than Viduka, is he better than Smith???

If the answer is yes to all those questions, then why wait a second longer, sign the guy.

Paul.

GUTIERREZ WAS ABSOLUTE 1st CLASS AGAIN, COLINCCINI LOOKS SO COMFORTABLE AT BACK MAKES IT LOOK EASY, AND I THOUGHT BASSONG LOOKED MORE THAN PROMISING,AND COULD PUT PRESSURE ON TAYLOR IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE AS HE NEEDS TO START IMPROVING.
LOADS OF POSITIVES FROM LAST NIGHT,
BUT ASHLEY HAS GOT TO BACK KEVIN, WE SHOULD HAVE HAD THE PLAYERS IN AND NOT PANNICKING WITH A FEW DAYS TO GO.
SURELY EVEN ASHLEY CAN SEE HOW ONLY KEEGAN IS THE ONLY ONE TOO TAKE THIS CLUB FORWARD. MAYBE HE LIKE SO MANY OTHER OWNERS DOES NOT LIKE NOT BEEN SEEN AS THE NUMBER ONE.
ASHLEY HAS TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE IF KEEGAN EVER GOES SO WILL MORE THAN 5000 FANS AS WELL.

so milner wants to go well, if we can get swp in let him, or part ex him with barry, but only if we can get one of them in, if not keep him until the next transfer window,
here is a list of players we should be trying to get players from
BULLARD (FULHAM)
SWP (CHELSEA)
ALONSO (LIVERPOOL)
SAVIOLA (R MADRID)
DOYLE (READING)
BAINES (EVERTON)
PALACIOS (WIGAN)

Come on LEE, we need you to get talking to James Milner and explain how alot of GEORDIES will be upset at him Leaving. We want to succeed, we want him to succeed and together we can do it. Villa is a side step, not a step up. Come on LEE getting talking and convince him to stay. Prove your worth as the top local reporter

Milner... Forget Villa, I am convinced he has been got at by Liverpool, so don't be surprised when he signs for them. With only 5 days to go before deadline, why have we waited so long for a meeting with MA., then surprise all round when the players we want are not available. I have a very bad feeling by all this, but I hope I am wrong.

im getting more depressed every day that passses......... MIKE we need more players in ,give KK wot he needs then watch where we go .........PLEASE SORT IT!
