Did United do enough before the window slammed shut?

By Lee Ryder on Sep 2, 08 12:28 AM

The names of Xisco, Nacho Gonzalez, Jonas Gutierrez, Farbricio Coloccini, Danny Guthrie and Sebastien Bassong proved to be main signings for Kevin Keegan this summer - but for many fans a manic day on transfer deadline day proved to be a disappointment with other clubs producing the "wow signing" most Toon supporters were desperate for.

The two Manchester sides grabbed two players that would have sparked scenes of celebration on Tyneside in Dimitar Berbatov and Robinho.

The two deadline day captures certainly give KK options in the final third but defensively United are short of numbers at the back and after the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal, there is certainly a despondent mood as United head into what could be a long hard winter.

The left-back area is the biggest worry with Jose Enrique already injured after Arsenal and no recognised replacement ready to step up to the plate.

Sure, Bassong can play in that position at a push while Charles N'Zogbia has already deputised in that position.

Yet injuries elsewhere in the back four could mean trouble for Newcastle United.

Habib Beye is also nursing an Achilles problem with any injuries to Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini almost certainly spelling danger for the Mags.

So after a summer of speculation of comings and goings, Michael Owen stays along with Alan Smith while any success from Shola Ameobi this season would be the stuff of fairytales.

Still so many ifs and buts for the black and whites but the conclusion has to be, despite some new arrivals and the work of United's transfer team in Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere, that the squad severely lacks depth and in what is now turning into a squad game in the Premier League, fans are fearing the paper thin roster could struggle once again in the dog eat dog world of the top flight.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Didn't Keegan say something about judging him on the player he would bring in after selling Milner..........and who have we got ?????
A 1 year loan signing.

Ashley and Keegan are liars.
The fans will now not believe a word you say.

Please sell the club to someone who is willing to invest in quality players, before you run this club into the ground.
RIP NUFC

No! Keegan told us that we wouldn't be disapointed on monday night with the sale of Milner, and i'm sorry to say i feel sick. I hope fatty Ashley gets beat up by someone at the next away match, thats if he decides to sit with them

I said it before Ashley has no ambition for this club. If he had half the ambition of sir John Hall he would have done a wow signing. Newcastle is a different club. You need a wow signing to make the place look vibrating and bring positive energy. unfortunately Newcastle has become what Manchester City used to be. I think the guy should sell the club even to a man in a cave

Yet again the mentallity of our fans are get rid, it's pathetic, it takes time to build a team, Keegan promised a replacement, he didn't say when, be patient, the days of overstretching are gone, another few years of Fat Freddy and we'd be the next Leeds. The big teams took time had continuity, that's what we need

david r said:

Lets look at dennis wise and his team
their supposed world wide knowledge of football doesn't seem to stretch outside Spain and La Coruna in particular

Not Keegans fault but he won't put up with this for long

by the way have we made a net spend this summer or have we as I suspect sold more that we bought

maybe that is why Ashley is having such fun

David said:

You dont waste much time. By my reckoning we have 27 senior/1st teasm players pros, unless somenting happens by the morning.
Given, Harper, Foster, (Krul?). Defs-
Beye, Enrique, Taylor, Collicini, Cacapa, Edgar, Bassong (Geremi, Nzogbia), Mid - Lua Lua, Butt, Guthrie, Barton, Geremi, Nzogbia, Guttirez, Gonzales, Duff (Smith). fwds - Owen, Viduka, Martins, Xisco, Carroll, Ameobi, Smith. 1 defender short unless Tozer or someone comes through and maybe lacking a bit creativity, but we haven't seen Gonzales yet. Throw in the KK factor, which is already apparent in style and attitude, we will not have a huge allardyce type slump like last year and will be better in terms of points and position. Top 10 for me, 2 years to challenge for top 6, top 4 probably out of reach now that citeh have been redeemed. Get used to it and enjoy the KK rollercoaster. Forget the press, they're building the club from the bottom and will not waste cash on arseholes. What they have they inherited from FF and his cronies, give it time and it will turn round.

I agree the squad is thin. But you also have to remember the NUFC are not playing in europe, unlike other clubs which are competing for the same position as NUFC. Also the youngsters will be introduce in probably cup games. their is actually some players in the youth/reserve that can do the job agains the bottom half or early cup rounds i.e. edgar and Tozer.

How is it that since 3 months ago where Keegan highlighted a left back as a priority we haven't been able to get one in?

I am massively underwhelmed...Xisco may be good but we have enough strikers and there are other priorities. We need a creative midfielder and Gonzalez will take time to settle and by te time he has e will be back to Valencia.

I don't like it how the fans have been decieved. If we are finding it difficult to get players in why don't they just tell the fans. Keegan said after the Milner deal it wont seem so bad soon and judge him on monday night...well where is his replacement and what happened to tat 12 million apart from Ashleys back pocket?

Jezza said:

What an absolute shambles. I lost a lot of respect for Keegan when he tried to tell us that it was his decision to sell Milner only 48 hours after he'd insisted he didn't even want to think about losing the player. Keegan's promises of new signings before the deadline then seemed very empty and so it turned out to be the case. In the event Milner was sold for £10 million or so just to fund the purchase of one solitary player for half that ammount. I thought we'd seen the last of this sell before you buy policy back in the dark days of Seymour and McKeag, and certainly didn't expect it from a billionaire owner who claims to have such big ambitions from our club.

Newcastle United's net transfer spend over the summer window is ABSOLUTELY ZERO which for a club of our stature and supposed ambition is a disgrace. The squad we have now is even more threadbare than the one that we barely avoided relegation with last season. Another long hard painful season looms ahead of us, with a guaranteed bottom half of the table finish at best. Thanks for nothing, Ashley.

Elliott said:

Not signing a left back and selling Milner with 3 days left without a replacement we KNOW is at least as good is absolutely unforgivable. Anyone with a pair of eyes can see Enrique struggles in this league. What are we going to do, throw a LM, N Zogbia in there? Maybe try Bassong a CB? Maybe just chuck in Kadar or Tozer and just hope for the best? What happens if Barton gets banned for 15 games? Is Jonas going to play on both wings? I feel sick. E

in answer to your question Lee..... No we didnt do enough not only fewer signing than was stated KK wanted but where was MA's "wow" signing

But think one or two getting a little excited after too many lagers because anyone who thinks Keegan is to blame for any of this needs to wake up.As for KK lying i think the only one he told was that it was his decision to let milner go.

Lee can you confirm whether the report of KK being called into a meeting yesterday afternoon with Ashley and Llambias quoted as being important but not about transfers plus KK being informed of our interest in Lazios full back by Chris Houghton was true

As has been said in previous threads Keegan was Ashleys way of appeasing the fans after Fat Sams short lived reign.Today has proved that KK has no say or power at SJP he isnt newcastles manager he just a well paid coach

But Mr Ashley has sure dug deep this summer
about 25 million spent roughly offset by 20 million recouped from sales...ffs championship teams have spent more
If pompey were offering a swap deal with Barton it wouldnt have mattered what player it was you should have took it and sent him and his bad press down to harry(another signing you failed to make)but no your non footballing head says you want a fee for someone come friday could be banned until new year minimum maybe whole season if the media get their way.

The blame lies yet again with an inept boardroom a problem we are all used to not Keegan

Oh do we blame KK but before that think of who would take over.....the newcastle job already known as a poison chalice so Keegan goes we could well get stuck with Denis Wise and that is a sickening thought

So nothing we can do now except get behind KK and the players we have at our disposal and hope if things go well someone will come along and make Mike an offer he cant refuse

BRITISH BY BIRTH
GEORDIE BY THE GRACE OF GOD

Disappointing yes and alarming, especially as regards the left back position. I think that Keegan et al really thought they could pull something off but weren't able to do so. I'm sure that work was going on behind the scenes, but we are not an attractive prospect at the moment. More turmoil is not the answer. We have no option but to get behind the players that we have got. Things aren't that bad - remember 77-92!

David said:

Ok hears my thoughts and what other people have said.

Yes it is same old Newcastle and yes we are desperate for left backs and stuff. But I think people need to get out of this fairy tale world and look at the club.

We finished 13th no europe nothing. Who is going to come to a club like that??

Now we have some good signings we gained and promising ones to which I am happy about. Colocinni, Spiderman, Guthrie all look promising.
And also the contract extension on Taylor and possible Owen. (praying for that one)

My opinion on the Milner sale if he wants to go and hand in his transfer request then what can you do, if he wants to go let him. His heart wasnt in it or the club and you cant force him to stay, He is only a kid.

With strikers, yes we do need strikers and fit ones too. Martins gets injured a bit, Viduka is just a injury hazard waiting to happen, owen is a ticking time bomb and what can I say about smith, well hes not much of a stiker at the moment. So I am all up for a new young striker if he puts in the performance.
Next thing we want is that lump Heskey or Thiery Henry who is spending most his time injured to, we will end up get a repeat Alberto Luque.

I am still looking forward to this season as every season, I am just looking at the brite side of things and I think we will do alright this season.

You cant tell me teams like villa, stoke, Everton or any of them other than top four look any better than us at the moment.

I am staying positive.

dubaiexile said:

Overall, looking at players in and players out in the close season to the deadline I think we have a much stronger squad.
None of the players who left are a loss - they were dead wood or just not premiership class. Milner was the exception but he hardly set the world alight.
The 3 newcomers have already proved they were good buys; if the 2 latest are half as good that will be 5 good players added for the loss of 1.
The quality of football far surpasses anything turned out by Sam the Sham.
We're heading in the right direction.
Ashley is not going to pour his personal wealth down a hole - this is a business.
Judge the management in 2 or 3 years not months.
And I'm old enough to have watched the lads win a major trophy so I know what a long time is!

Fantastic stuff. I just love being lied to.

We sign a young inexperienced striker and get a one year loan deal on a midfielder.

No left back no quality replacement for Emre, Milner.

I'm never keen on loan deals without buy options. If 'Nacho' plays well he'll leave next summer, if he doesn't we've wasted a years wages. Fingers crossed he's professional.

We've got a billionaire owner who promises us WOW signings and doesn't deliver.

If we pick up any long term injuries we're in big trouble. Did you see the bench for the Arsenal game?

Thanks Mike 'I thought it was non-alcoholic' Ashley ... please sell the club to a Billionaire with money.

You lied to us - expect a WOW reaction next game.

I can't believe the way this club is being run.

10% on season tickets and no signings ...

Time to boo the owner and cheer on the team. They're going to need all our support until we get lied to about a 'WOW' signing in January ...

Alan Smith needs to have a great season.

If Joey avoids a long ban he looked good in his cameo at Arsenal - Great tackle.

I want to congratulate Keegan on getting hold of wotz is name and thingy ma bob. I’m pretty sure they will do their best. It’s not the players or the management that are our problem. Injuries? All teams have the same problem. NUFC’s problem is at the top. Pity we can’t sell Ashley and buy Gates.

Well tonight I’ll be doing something that Geordies and Newcastle fans seem to have being doing for years. Crying in my beer.

Graham Hall said:

Taxi for Ashley. How long will Keegan put up with the blatant meddling of messer's Llambas and Wise. Please Ashley sell to someone who wants to invest and bring quality players to Newcastle United.

Adam Knox said:

The attitude of some of Newcastles 'fans' on here, frankly, stinks. Do you honestly think for a second we didnt try to buy a left back? Like a few other more sensible fans on here have realised:

-Clubs dont have to sell
-Players dont have to move

We're not a big draw at the minute, face it. We've been mid-table at kindest for a few seasons now, no Europe and we're not paying mercenary money anymore (which i see as a good thing.

YES I am dissapointed we didnt bring in a few more, yes I am angry at the lack of a 'wow' signing but to assume we were only allowed to purchase/loan these two players and no more is a tad OTT in my opinion.

Look at what we've shipped out vs what we've brought in:

Out: Emre, Rozenhal, Milner, Carr, Ramage, Faye.

In: Coloccini, Gutierrez, Guthrie, Bassong, Xisco & Gonzalez.

Emre was injury prone and inconsistant, Rozenhal? hahaha, Milner (Hard workign, industrious player but little end product) Carr(horrendous right back) Ramage- not premier league standard and faye (who i was actually sad to see go_

We've brought in a class international defender, an all-ready cukt hero, a promising couple of youngsters and 2 players from La liga who look like they have good potential.

YES we needed a left back, yes our squad is thin, yes we needreinforcements in January but like Lee says, we have a strong first XI, if we can keep fitness and conditioning high we could survive to January.

All im saying is there's no point doom mongerign and staying away from St James, ro voicing your discontent, even if you want Ashley gone, what goo would a new owner do coming in now? Back the team...thats our only job...

Till january.

im just glad the deadline has passed and we dont have to put up with any more speculation for a while. Newcastle united have to be the unluckiest club on the planet.. Chelsea get billionare owner ..he spends bucket loads ....man city get one ...he spends bucket loads then when he cant spend any more he sells to another load of billionaires who buy them robinho....if you ever read this Mike!..robinho 32m is a WOW signing...Newcastle gets its billionare owner and hes a bigger penny pinching tosspot than Eugine Krabs..i mean i bet he has his first penny safely tucked away somewhere....lol am i the only one who feels a little cheated here..when is the "fun" going to begin....come december i'll be saying what ive said the last 5 years...." there's always next year" .... it was always going to be hard to get good players to come because of the last couple of years and our reduction in stature...but we havent been helped by the ashley one bit...i could rant all night about this...its so hard to write about Mike Ashley and not swear....and i better not get started about Dennis wise and his cronies....i mean is there something about the set up at newcastle that im missing here...because something just doesnt make a whole lot of sense....we didnt even use the milner money to buy anyone???? if we dont need to sell to buy...then why since Ashley being owner have Newcastle recieved more in transfer fees then they have spent....nope i still dont get it....my head hurts..i gotta go to bed

Alex said:

Man City have ruined football. Just when chelsea were slowing down and refusing to spend stupid money again, man city come along and do exactly that. That's going to force chelsea, man u, liverpool, arsenal etc to spend big to compete and leave the rest in a MASSIVE gulf below.

I dont want mike ashley to go out and spend 50m on one player - it's destroying the game. So we'll be in the next group either replying on youth or spending over the odds for average players - im 2 years time we'll probably be able to flog Ameobi for 10m as top players will be 100m+.

Well done arabs and russians for ruining football - they think it's fun and a toy to own a club but they've wrecked it for everyone else. Are we in Quatar??

On our transfer day though, dunno anything about these 2 we got in but we still needed a left and right back so thats disappointing. Finnan for 1.5m would've been nice. he's old but can still do a job on either side short term and possible £5m for Stephen Hunt? I didn't see much of James Milner's money being spent. Ah well.

james said:

jason said:

In a word NO United didnt do enough in this transfer window, people are saying we only sold one good player during the summer in James Milner, but i thought Ab Faye didnt really put a foot wrong last season and was possibly our best central defender last season. Looking back on the players we sold i wish Milner, Faye and Emre were still here because we have failed to replace any of them. We still desperately need a left back as Enrique is injured and is still taking some time to get up to speed in the premiership, a creative midfielder was never signed either with Pablo Aimar the ideal replacement for Emre. I have never heard of either Xisco or Gonzalez but lets hope they are of the same kind of quality as Spiderman and Coloccini because they are going to need to be, with us staring down the barrel of another relegation dog fight this season. If Mike Ashley had half of the ambition of Keegan we would have signed some top quality players this summer, but instead the Newcastle squad is looking very threadbare with no real cover at both full back positions, and lacking pace and quality in the offensive positions, how we could have done with Shaun Wright-Phillips and Pablo Aimar. Ashley promised much but delivered very little, i am not holding my breath for the next transfer window as we'll do nowt in that either. SELL UP NOW ASHLEY YOU CLEARLY CANNOT HANDLE NUFC.

James 09 said:

Lee - that can't be a serious question!

Football's just becoming more and more farcical by the day.

We - NUFC - are a whole another story though. I (and an ever increasing bunch of other Geordies) just cannot see how Ashely is taking us forward - how on earth are we going to compete for European spots in our current state? Or maybe that is indicative of just what a robust and competitive league we are in? Yea right.

We acquire two rather unproven players (though of course I wish them all the best) when our current squad nearly got beat by 83 at the Emirates. Fantastic - yet another season of typical NUFC to marvel at aye.

Whumpie said:

The only WOW thing this morning is just how short-memoried, fickle and gullible so many of the Toon Army are. Some of you are even saying Fat Fred was better, for Chrissakes. No wonder people laugh at us.

A few points to back that up:

1. When did Ashley promise a 'wow signing'? That was something put to KK on the spot in a live interview and was never substantiated. STOP BEING SO GULLIBLE!! How many times have the press been right about anything NUFC-related this summer? Nil. Write out 100 lines: "If it ain't a direct quote, it's garbage." Learn, people.

2. When Ashley first got in, the message was clear: improve the club steadily and sustainably, over a few years:
Step 1 - Get the club out of financial turmoil. Enter Chris Mort. Tick.
Step 2 - Get back to playing the way the Toon should. Enter KK. Tick.
Step 3 - STOP BUYING USELESS HEADLINE-GRABBING PLAYERS. Bloody TICK, people!!

Wow signings? Marcelino anyone??

Of course we're disappointed, and I'm sure KK is gutted that the team's efforts to get a good left-back and others in didn't work. But look at the 4 signings we've seen. Now assume the latest 2 are as good. Would you have taken that at the end of last season?

I bloody would!

Stop believing press tripe and reacting like petulent kids - it's embarrassing.

Tony Toon said:

Adam Knox - at last a sensible voice of reason. I agree with every word and admit I too am a tad disappointed that we didn't add cover at full back particularly. Someone said we have plenty of strikers - well that was certainly not the case at he Emirates a few days ago!
I suspect that the majority of critics who expect to be competing with the big 4 NOW are the same people who just a short while ago were agreeing that the club wouldn't be turned around overnight and that a top 10 finish would be a success this season. What's changed? I think we have the squad to finish comfortably in the top 10 and with a little bit of luck with injuries maybe push the top 6. As has been said the style of football is light years away from that of Allardyce and the players that have come in to date have been excellent for the team so let's give Nacho and Xisco a chance before writing them off. After all Wenger hasn't done badly with "unknowns" at Arsenal. I understand the frustration (as a fan for over 40 years more than most!) but have a little patience. Ashley and Keegan said it would take time so keep the faith. I still believe that both have a vision and strategy.

Neil said:

Look at the bulk of the comments above. Is it any wonder the majority of the country now sees us as joke fans? Of course we can't turn into a top 4 club overnight. Of course we can't bring in the 'wow' signing when we're not even in the UEFA cup.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We bring in some solid signings. Which we have. Now King Kev to steer us to a top 8 position by xmas, jostling for a European slot. THEN we can think about bringing in the 'wow' signing. Any big name players we sign now will be in it purely for the money. Nowt else. Of course the lack of cover for certain positions is worrying but again, what to do? Bring in another Babayaro? Ask Stephen Carr if he wouldn't mind awfully coming back to the toon? Of course not. We're just gonna have to stick it out and show some good old fashioned backbone.

So. Grow up boys. We're in an infinitely different position now than last season or the season before. We're playing or at least attempting to play 'carpet' football as opposed to the hideous long ball style of Fat Sam. And we've got an owner with a bit of business sense who won't waste his hard earned and is in the process of totally restructuring the club from bottom to top.

Howay the lads.

Lets do it proper. Long term.

WE NEARLY GOT RELEGATED LAST YEAR, with the way our injuries are going its gonna be tough again this year. we cant compete with arsenal, chelsea, man u, man city now, liverpool and so many others that have proved there a gud team over the last few seasons. were not even a scratch on the of villa, everton , pompie and now sunderland...

Some of the idiots on here who say we're behind Sunderland in terms of transfer activity. Tell you what, would you have felt better if we'd spent money for spending sake and brought in an extra 5 players of a poor standard?

GET A GRIP.

Clubs don’t have to sell players, players don’t have to move, we have no idea who we went for and (probably) got knocked back by. We can’t attract big players till we perform better... that’s a fact. Otherwise you end up by the dregs of spurs. Everton still have a smaller squad than us and they did well last season and I don’t think they're much better than us. Top 8 would be good this season, we've already shown we can push man utd and that’s with some key players out.

Our first choice first team this season would be:

--------------Given----------------
Beye--Taylor-----Coloccini--Enrique

Spidey---Guthrie---Butt-----N'Zogbia

----------Martins--Owen------------

Leaving a bench from: Harper, Krul, Forster, Edgar, Bassong, Cacapa, Tozer, Gonzalez, Duff, Barton, Viduka, Xisco, and Carroll.

And that’s not even counting Lua-lua, Zamblera, Kadar, Godsmark etc. i.e. our reserves.

When you map it out like the above, while we are a few bodies light in certain positions, its still a good squad, just need a few purchases in January. Until then I wish the doom mongerers would just shut up and any IDIOT who is actually harping for a return of Shepherd needs to get their head checked out... HE NEARLY BANKRUPTED THE CLUB MAKING THSE STUPID SIGNINGS JUST TO APPEASE PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

Alec Cowan said:

Perspective PLEEEEEZE!! Lee, the straight answer is "could have done better", especially on priority full back targets. But for goodness sake just put a cold towel round our collective heads and think. The attacks on Ashley are embarassing. Kev has already said that the ammunition was there (money) before we sold Milner, it was down to getting deals done and in the current climate that is almost a lottery. Ashley must be regretting the "Wow" brag, but in fairness when it was made Saviola was on the cards and I suspect that only got hijacked by the fickleness of Robinho - would he go or not. In he end Rob went to the highest bidder. Mercenary, good as he is. Wait till he is sick of sunbathing in Manchester.

Fact is we had 4 very good acquisitions before yesterday and we have added a current Uraguayan international playmaker and a young hungry striker. Quality wise we are placed a thousand percent better than we were with BFS squad. Lets get on with the blending and build up - all of us agreed with KK after the Chelsea match that we had to build and grow. So to all of the idiots forecasting relegation because we did not land one of the trouble making egos get real and calm down. While the squad is thinner than we would like it is still far stronger than this time last year. And the new kids we have been quietly buying for the longer term might just provide some occasional bonusses this year For what it is worth check out the Arsenal forums and the anger about no wow signings by Wenger!!

It's going to be a long process of building up to the top and it's now been made harder with Man City. All these owners are going to ruin the premiership. Chelsea were starting to be sensible but now we have Man City who will just buy everyone. We have Keegan thats all we need. We will get the wow signings when we are established at the top again. It is a shame we didn't get Saviola though I think he would've been a great purchase.

I'm not concerned about the players Newcastle has signed we havn't even seen them play yet and it appears by what i have just read the fans are already bringing them down! That old saying comes to mind "dont judge a book by it's cover". I'm sure King Kev will get the best out of the players we have got and just signed. But thats my worry having been reading that KK has walked out!! Newcastle need stability if we are going to compete for Europe, look what David Moyes has done for Everton only on a shoestring and i think we're better than Everton, if KK has walked out I can't see anything positive for the next season. All my faith is in King Kev I just know that he will produce a good string of wins for us get a fair few points and finish in the top ten. As for the Wise & Co. situation I can see the fans frustration as I am frustrated myself but i thought there job was to be talent scouts getting good players without the big money tags which at the looks of Gutherie, Guiterez and coloccini they have done a fair job so far we can't just buy players for buying sake and have another Emre situation or even worse Stephane G'uivarche who just didnt wanna play for us.

After a promising start to Deadline Day yesterday I was pretty optimistic that we'd end up with the 4 or 5 Keegan said we were in for after the sale of Milner, so it was disappointing to only end up with the two which were reported early on.

I'm disappointed we didn't get a higher profile signing, or a couple of names we know from the Premier League, but I wouldn't want the club to go throwing £30m at the likes of Robinho or Berbatov. In Man City's case I wouldn't mind, where it's coming from unimaginable middle-eastern riches, but certainly not the way Shepherd would've done it.

I would, however, have liked to have a seen another £10-15m signing, but would we want a player to join us just because he didn't have anywhere else to go like Robinho has? I wouldn't.

I'm more concerned about the Keegan rumours. Keegan is by far the best thing the club has at this moment in time and the only chance we have of getting a top 8 finish. Top 6 will be very tough now given our injury record.

Furthermore, while the aim the management has of stopping the purchase of these big name failures is a good one, the way they seem to be implementing it is all wrong. The manager of a club should never be learning of the club's intentions through post-match interviews and the like.

There are two keys to our season and immediate future:

1. The rumours this morning are wrong and Keegan stays.
2. Our injury record improves.

Provided these two things happen, we can still finish top 8 and build on that. But unless our luck improves with injuries I'm afraid we'll struggle.

One thing I don't want to see though is everyone start holding out for January because, let's face it, not much tends to happen in January.

HAS KING KEV WALKED?????????

Gerry Hagon said:

No doubt the club were trying to sign more players and could not do so.

The last time we had KK he was the one who made Newcastle an attractive place for people like Alan Shearer. It was KK who changed the club from a selling club to a buying one. He it was who had the team playing so wonderfully that Newcastle had to be rationed for TV coverage.

I am sure that he would have attracted the people he wanted if allowed to do so. But Denis Wise? Not a chance.

I think it was John Beresford who said, ' Get KK involved in the transfer process'. He was dead right.

Any chance of one of you lot from the chronicle getting off yer fat chuffs and fighting your way through the rest of the nations media and doing a bit of reporting from SJP?

Calm down. Kevs not gone yet and he won’t go. One of the reasons he has got the signings that he has is that they (when they haven’t heard of NUFC) they know who Kevin Keegan is. If you want big names at Newcastle, Keegan and Owen are two of a few. Watch the signings they are unknowns, they’re young but I bet there hungry and will want to prove themselves. So don’t boycott St James’s. Get your backsides there and show them the Geordie Roar. Show them how proud and loyal the Toon Army is. Have a cry in your beer tonight. Then come back fighting like we always have. The word supporters, comes from support. The word deserters, comes from pudding.

Keegan Leaves Newcastle?
According to BBC Radio Newcastle, Kevin Keegan has left Newcastle United this morning after a meeting yesterday with club owner Mike Ashley...

While these reports remain unconfirmed, BBC Radio Five Live has since repeated the information on a national level.

However, such rumours have circulated before. It is known that Ashley and Keegan enjoy something of a fiery relationship, although all previous talk of a resignation has been proven false.

Keegan is said to have grown increasingly frustrated at the lack of control at the club, while his relationship with the board continued to strain.

The Northern Echo claim that Ashley's decision to recruit only two players on the last day of the summer window was a key component in Kevin Keegan's desire to leave.

'King Kev' had oft stated his belief to the board that he needed at least four or five new players, especially in the wake of the visit to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday where he was forced to field Ameobi, who hadn't played football for nine months, and name a bench littered with teenagers and Joey Barton.

The sale of James Milner too, has also been cited as a possible reason for the departure of Keegan, who believed the now Villa wideman to be a crucial player in any success the Magpies were to enjoy this season.

Let's get rid of the fat fake.

The squads threadbare.

Can't blame KK for walking.

Ashley's clueless.

No contract for Milner, wages so tight no one will sign.

Won't pay the fees to get quality in.

How come our billionaire won't spend his cash on Brazilian superstars?

If KK has gone you'll not be having any fun Mike, and you'll need some hefty bodyguards if you're going to sit with the fans too.

Ashley Set For Show Down With Fans!

Newcastle United are believed to have parted company with manager Kevin Keegan, according to reports on Tuesday ... allegedly following a bust up over transfers.
Keegan came back to St James' Park in January for a second spell but rumours yesterday suggested Keegan and owner Mike Ashley were not pulling in the same direction.
One of the many issues that had been troubling Keegan was the enforced sale of James Milner to Aston Villa, and we hear today that KK was furious at Ashley´s attempts to try and sell Joey Barton last night ... another player KK wanted to keep.

Ashley was said to have refused to offer Michael Owen a new contract until after the transfer window had closed, suggesting Owen, too, was for sale.
Though it is not known if Keegan has resigned or indeed been sacked by Newcastle it is understood that he has parted company with the club for a second time.
If he did walk out on the Toon it would be the second time Keegan has quit Newcastle, having walked away in 1997 after the club went PLC.

It will be interesting to see if Ashley continues to sit with the supporters at away games.

Personally I'd STRONGLY advise him to stay at home!

No smoke without fire.

I know I said don't boycott SJP. I've changed my mind (and I'm not even a woman) No stadium protests you've got to pay to get in.

Ray York said:

If KK has walked, and I would not blame him, then presumably we will get that short arsed cockney Wise as manager - he already seems to be in charge of transfer policy, totally unacceptable. Look at his record at Leeds once he lost his top man - Gus Poyet, Leeds were no more than average, so what will he accomplish at Newcastle - relegation! If he is ever appointed Ashley had better stay away from the crowd both at home and away.

Sorry I don't want Shearer in these circumstances.

I'll not cheer Shearer's appointment at the expense of KK.

KK's been a star and has been stabbed in the back by Ashley & Ashley's transfer team.

I'd feel a complete a***h0!e cheering Shearer as manager when KK was doing a great job with both hands tied behind his back and guns at his head.

I hope you all feel the same.

Ashley Out!

God am I angry ...

Sick of your website taking three goes to accept my comments too.

Why the hell didn't we try and get Arshavin? No one else could be bothered. If we had (and yes hindsight is a marvellous thing) then would we be miserable today?

Why no updates for more than an hour - the comments should be buzzing.

I've heard that the arabs who have taken over ManC approached cashley about buying the toon, but he said only if they came in as his partner.

Don't know if it's true, but its certainly feasible.

Sad day for the toon if Kev really has gone. I'm gutted.

Darryn said:

Kevin Keegan is Newcastle's biggest asset right now.
If He's been sacked and replaced by Denis Wise then Ashley has completely lost the plot. The fans will be furious !!
Where or who is the WOW signing ?? If Ashley claims a Wow signing has never been mentioned then why has he waited until after the window closes to disclaim his comments !!
If Keegan has been sacked then some sort of protest has to be made by the fans !!!

Harry McCarthy said:

i dont think Mike Ashley has the money to splash out good money for a top players and we as fans gotta understand we not in europe and we a mid table team with players who get injured all the time

Milner was a shocking sale he was are best player by far we have good players in Martins,Owen, viduka (if fit)and same with Duff
Given,Taylor,Beye,Guthrie,jonas,Smith

so we have good players but we are wafer fin and injuries to key players like that will cost i mean look at the beach of the top 4 they are so strong we need to invest in youth and try and get the most talented players because we cant compete with the big boys so we have to spend wisley i mean spending money is great but look at the likes of Luque,Viana,Emre,Dyer,Bellamy,Owen,Jenas,Woodgate,Marcliano,Bassetdas the list goes on and on we should inspire do teams like everton, blackburn, westham
which all havent gto huge amounts of money but still manage to finish top 10 ever season
