Is a Kevin Keegan return the only thing that will restore your faith?

By Lee Ryder on Sep 6, 08 01:41 PM

KEVIN Keegan taking his seat in the dugout against Hull City next Saturday may well sound like something out of movie but let's be honest after the week we've had it just can't be ruled out.

Pictures of Mike Ashley guzzling champagne in New York in the Pink Elephant have left a sour taste in the mouth for Toon fans with the shots taken while the Keegan storm was in full swing 3,000 miles away on Tyneside.

And as the rain lashes down on a depressed and blue city back here in Newcastle the feeling from many is that Ashley's position has became untenable.

Takeover talk is rife after a week of trials and tribulations in Newcastle which has included a transfer deadline day farce that included the attempted sale of Michael Owen and the arrival of two unknown quantities from La LIga.

And with Keegan gone for the moment and Mike Ashley also believed to be absent for the Hull game due to a prior arrangement it leaves United in tatters from a managerial point of view with one of the London brigade's appointments Chris Hughton in the frame to take over as caretaker boss.

Dennis Wise is also still in the thick of things along with Tony Jimenez and as it stands with Ashley still very much the owner of the club, the London duo will be left with the impossible task of replacing Keegan as manager.

It's a fair bet they won't even have a clue where to start but on Tyneside anxious eyes watch on.

Alan Shearer has ruled himself out but with Big Al being a Geordie who loves the club, was he ever really going to be in the running after this mess? I doubt it.

Reassuringly it's also thought that Gus Poyet doesn't want to move from London but hey if you can run a club from the capital, why not simply let Gus pick the team from the smoke (Championship Manager style) and just simply watch the latest score on his computer and ring Hughton when he wants to make a substitution?

Under Ashley though the smart money would be on the director of football system to stay in place and for former Swindon and Millwall boss Wise to bring in a continental manager who will coach the players provided by the diminutive Londoner.

Alternatively, Ashley could sell the club.

Talk is hot potential Indian buyer Anil Ambani wants to take the club off billionaire Ashley's hands.

And the first thing he is aiming to do is bring back KK, hand him full control and give him a crack at the January transfer window with the restraints from above in the boardroom removed.

For the majority of Newcastle fans this option sounds too good to be true at the moment.

Tempers are still clearly frayed in the city and it doesn't look like anything will get the fans back onside unless Keegan is reinstated.

IS A KEVIN KEEGAN RETURN THE ONLY THING THAT WILL RESTORE YOUR FAITH?

I think that maybe it will be. For the first time i think we can actually look at the situation of a manager leaving and actually ask "how do we move on from here?" In 97 we had lost our messiah but gained a manager who had the promise of winning the premiership although it meant pear shaped, to Ruud Gullits attempt to bring sexy football back, to Sir Bob's Champions League heroes, to Graeme Souness who at the time was a proven cup winner, to Roeder and his sucessful stint as caretaker manager which unfortunately wasn't followed up, to a successful Bolton manager who came and bored us to death, all the way back to Keegan. If Shearer isn't interested then i just don't see any appointment from Ashley that I can trust, surely he must have seen this coming all the way back in January? Although we have to give credit to Ashley for sorting the club out financially i think he has outstayed his welcome and should find a new venture as northern football is certainly not his forte. Now if I owned the club (anyone got a spare 235million?) then i would want Shearer as manager and, ironically, have Keegan as director of football on the terms that he works WITH the manager and that the manager has a veto on all transfers in and out.

With the events of the last few days leaving Newcastle with an enhanced reputation as the Premier Leagues number one 'basket case', it's simply impossible to guess where we might go from here. KK in charge for the home game against Hull ? Possible I suppose, but I, for one, hope not. Having little faith in ‘Messiah’s’ of any description, it’s time to move on from the cult of personality that has cursed this club for decades,
and make an appointment ‘legend’ free with a hint of reason.
Additionally, if giving KK 'full control', under whatever regime, means that he goes after the likes of Beckham, Lampard and Henry as suggested in some of today's MSM, then thank god he's gone. As for the issues surrounding Owen, if you owned the Toon would you have been trying to off load him? - I sure as hell would. £115,000 p/w for a player who's way past his best, but injured so frequently he's unable to illustrate this fact regularly on the field - it's insanity to offer him an enhanced contract however wealthy the club.
Whatever the truth behind the Xisco signing, at the very least he's a very promising player likely to be on the pitch on a regular basis – at a fraction of the cost. In fact, truth be told folks, ALL the incoming players this summer look a cut above what we've had in for donkey's years - and this fact ought to be recognised – not withstanding the absolute shambles that passes for leadership at present.
Progress was, at least until last Tuesday, slowly being made. To hold Ashley or Wise as entirely responsible for the current debacle and Keegan as the sinned against innocent strikes me not only as utterly naïve, but totally inaccurate. Unfortunately however, such a conclusion is typical of the soap opera that is NUFC today.

aye! its the only way-keegan!keegan!

I'll support the players.

Any manager that comes in with the current set up will be a puppet (Gus Puppet?).

I won't support Ashley's puppet.
When he walks to the dug out I hope it will be to cries of 'Keeeegan' by 50,000 angry Geordies.

Hopefully 'Sack the Board' and 'Keeeeeegan' will ring out around St James' until Ashley goes.

Keegan back for the Hull game - brilliant!!
I won't accept anything less while it's a possibility.

Keegan's been treated badly by the club.
We should stay angry with Ashley until justice is done.
Ashley goes and Keegan is reinstated.

I can't believe that this has happened.
We were getting glimmers of a team starting to gel and play some good stuff.

Keeeeeeeegan!!!!
Ashley Out!!!!
Don't buy from any Ashley outlets.

Archie,
I agree with your comments. Keegan is one of my heroes, but I'm dismayed by his reaction. Xisco's comment that he met Keegan on Monday afternoon, and was impressed with his plans, only for him to walk away because he did not get all the toys in the shop.
In short he has bottled it, again.
The club should not be held to ransom by Michael Owen. He is a fantastic player, but does he really want to play for Newcastle? I think not, with Keegan or without him.
Everyone needs to move on and get behind the club.
Civil war, one fanzine has declared "war" on the club, will result in a disaster.
The fans are the foundation this club is built on, Lets be honest it does not have anything else going for it.
Without that foundation the club is nothing.
The vast majority of the people I have seen on the TV raising their concerns, were not even born during the darkest times of the club, the late 70's and early 80's.
We are a million miles away from that, however continue with the current ill advised reaction and we will quickly return.
Do not believe the hype, try and evaluate the current situation and back the team.
Together we will come through, divided we fall.

We have been down for so many years...n i do not want to continue the so call 'united' behind a bunch of nonsense who are driven by profit. It is not just about KK but the way the club is run. Loyalty of the fans have been exploited and abused once again. If the restriction of KK produces results then by all means go...but since last season he has already started to produce some results...y cant he be given the rights n backing to continue with what he has done...if no results appear then so be it give him the sacking...not just bring in 2 'WISE' guys to over right the manager...now NUFC is just hiring a coach not a manager!!!!!y pay him so much? which successful club is actually not run by the manager? pls name me!!!WE WANT RESULTS!!!

What was up with that statement from Newcastle United today? "It is a fact... it is a fact" ... BORING! Who offers up silliness like that at times like these. Where is someone willing to stand up and say anything in their defense? Face it, these owners have no connection to the fans and aren't willing to try to make one, certainly Ashley is done in the stands.

I love the Club but for the sake of it, it must be given a fresh start at the ownership level. Our brand and support is too strong to NOT be one of the clubs that rises in this current environment of big money investment in the Premiership. How can Ashley not see that?

If it takes a boycott of the Hull game to do it, then by all means, boycott. But we can't go on boycotting for long, because NUFC is OUR team, not theirs. Keep the furor up short term and Ashley may take an immediate offer to escape and get some of his investment back. Frankly, I don't expect to ever see him round here again.

I think it is important to know the plans of the board now that the club is in such a mess.

My faith will only be restored if they can convince all the fans that whatever they are doing now will bring us success. However, judging on this transfer window, I'm really not convinced that we have the right people to take us forward.

Let us monitor the ability of the board in the next two weeks. Let us hear what their plans are, our new manager is, that is, if they decide to communicate.

just been watching sky sports and that journo steve curry was smugly pouring over the recent events and criticising keegan!!! they are all loving this war of words and revelling in the lies that nufc are saying about keegan.....in my belief and experience KK is a proud and honourable man who, like us supporters, deserves far far better than we are getting just now............i will never ever beleive what they say if KK says the contrary.....the man has no need to lie,he loves the club, city and supporters. Ashley's position and that of wise, lambias and jimenez(not particularly vetere)have now become untenable.....how on earth can any of these set foot in SJP again on a matchday...they have started a battle they cannot win...trying to make mugs of us supporters.I really dont care who becomes the new manager under the current regime,.
The only thing that can possibly put this right is the rumoured buyout becoming a reality, please god i hope so.Only then if a new owner has his head screwed on right and lets a new manager manage can we begin to look forward again with hope and optimism....and if KK is that man then the new owner will not only appease the hordes,he will be doing the right thing in reinstating the only person out there with a sincere and genuine love for the club, this quality puts KK well above any other candidate in my view.I also believe that boycotting the hull game and one or 2 more is the correct way to show our displeasure and anger at the clowns in charge,if we go and just chant then what good will that do,i know fine well that the media in all its guises WILL NOT BROADCAST WHAT IS BEING CHANTED AND THE GENERAL FEELING DURING THE MATCH.BUT BY BOYCOTTING THEY HAVE NO CHOICE ON THE MATTER,EMPTY SEATS WILL SAY IT ALL WHILE THE WORLD IS WATCHING AND WE WILL BE ABLE TO GET OUR POINT OVER TO THE MASSES.this will show that despite what others might think,us geordies will not just watch 11 shirts regardless. We must do this or ashley has won, hands down....it aint gonna be easy, not going as a protest and ive never done it before but its the only way,

Neil said:

For me the departure of the current senior management at the club is the only thing that would restore my faith.

Irrespective of the conflicting statements from Keegan and the Club about whether he knew he would have no control over transfers, IT IS A FACT that since Llambias took over KK was the only public face of the club. You never saw Llambias, Wise or Ashley giving press conferences, and yet week after week KK was up in front of the cameras toeing the party line and justifying decisions he evicently had had no part in and was not comfortable with. Little wonder his statements seemed at odds with the evidence so often.

And I just can't see any self-respecting manager putting up with that. We'll end up with someone second or third rate who simply wants NUFC on his CV for as long as he can get away with it.

Dave McAllister said:

As much as I hate the current regime, I think we'd be made a laughing stock again if KK were to return. Potential targets would look at KK's record and wonder if the guy was going to be at the club for the long haul. I love KK as much as the next Mag but something inside says a return would be wrong.A clean break of owner and manager is probably the best we could hope for. Bring in Shearer, let him pick his backroom staff, let him do his job.

Ron C said:

Got to say I agree with Archie. The list of players KK produced (leaked, admittedly, by the club, so we can expect these to be the "lowlights") constitutes a motley crew of has beens (Beckham, etc).

The signings of recent months DO look like the best we have had in a long time. I am sick of signing Kluiverts and Vidukas at one end of the spectrum or Luques and Viannas at the other.

Let's now get behind the most promising team we have had in years and support whoever is brought in as coach (not manager) of the team. If January brings us another Coloccini and Guiteriez and one or two of the youngsters come through who knows where we could get to in the league - we might even win a cup!

I've always admired and liked Keegan, but it is time to move on.

James said:

Ashley just needs to go! The recent statements from the board just proves this, they are turning this into a farse. All calls for moderate action needs to stop and we need to push Ashley out of this club now. The more action we as fans take the easier it will be for a new owner to come in (it will push the price of the club down). I'm truely sorry about this, but it is the only way. We need to boycott all games until MA is gone. Maybe it's true that Owen needs to go and that Xisco is a good player, but that is a descision for the manager to make. He is responssible for the results on the field and needs to be in total control.

Although I am gutted that KK has gone and I totally disagree with Wise's Director Of Football role - one thing has bothered me about this whole mess from day 1. If KK knew he would be working under a DOF and was'nt happy with that - HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN THE JOB. You either have total control of who you buy and sell or you don't. There is no half way house.

Unfortunately, I simply cannot believe that Ashley did not spell out clearly to KK the role that others would take in player recruitment. We all love KK - BUT - he does spit his dummy out (and often we love him the more for it) and KK should have known that he could not work for long under this type of regime.

So why did he take the job? MONEY. His Soccer Circus was £1million in the red and, I believe, his desperation to right his finances led him to make a wrong decision in agreeing to work under conditions he would never have agreed to in his heyday.

The only other scenario is that Ashley promised KK total control over recruitment and sales and then changed the 'goalposts'. Sorry KK, but I just can't believe that. I think the truth is that once the security of knowing he was banking £50K a week wore off it was KK who tried to change the goalposts and Ashley was having none of it. Result - mayhem.

Ashley will get slammed by Toon fans, including me, but I want him out not because I believe he doublecrossed KK but because I don't agree with the way he wants to run our club. There is a difference.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions but I think Archie's comments are way off the mark.

1) To draw a conclusion that the Toon are better off without Keegan based on unverified and unsubstantiated paper talk that Keegan wanted to sign Beckham, Lampard & Henry, is naïvety in the extreme. Lets not forget Keegan himself had said that he would not be trying to sign them even though he admired them as players.

Yeah, lets not let the facts get in the way of a good argument.

2) As for the suggestion that somehow a consistent, proven goalscorer at the highest level, is somehow a player we do not need but we should place our hopes on an untried, Spanish under 21 who most fans have never heard of before, beggars belief!

Xisco may indeed turn out to be a great acquisition but we just do not know. Great players in Spain & Portugal, quite often fail in the Premier League, anyone remember Albert Luque or Hugo Viana?

What is a fact, is that any newcomer without Premier League experience, is something of a gamble, something the Newcastle hierarchy seem only too familiar with.

If you want to challenge for a European place, you need top proven goal scorers and Owen falls into that category.

3) There is one point which I do concur with Archie and that is the point he made that it is utterly naïve to hold Ashley or Wise as entirely responsible for the current debacle. I agree because this fails to mention the person who presides over all NUFC business and that is Derek Llambias. It was Llambias who was at the helm, whilst Ashley was partying in New York and his responsibility was to 'run the show', something he clearly failed to do in spectacular fashion.

There is no doubt in my mind where the integrity lies and that is with Keegan. I just hope that Toon fans will all ensure they do absolutely everything in their power to hurt Ashley where it matters - in his pocket. He must be shown that his investment in Newcastle is rapidly becoming devalued. This has two benefits, it will make him want to sell and it will make the value more attractive to potential buyers.

Ashley and his cockney cronies need to know they are more than just persona non grata, but an entire community is now at work to bring their demise.

Nice to see some sense returning after what has been a dramatic few days for our club. Yes, Ashley and Co seem to be doing a grand job of making our club the laughing stock of the country and their idea of management is off this planet - what the hell do wise, jimenez and llambias know about football and players that kk doesn't? However, it does seem that kk has simply bottled it again - he talks to Xisco one day about his plans for the team then walks the next. I have the greatest respect for KK and I hope his soccer circus does well in the long term but let's leave him to it. I'd like to see ashley and co sell up to someone with a genuine interest in making this club big again [big in the sense of actually winning things!]. I'd then like to see Shearer have a crack with his own backroom staff and FULL control over transfers and team management. he's nothing to lose. We can't really get any worse can we? Let's not let our hearts rule our heads - in all honesty i think MA brought kk back simply to appease the fans till the end of the season. I never agreed with it last time round, I certainly don't want to see kk return again, as much as I do believe his treatment [if the papers are to be believed] from MA et al has been quite simply shocking.

Sy said:

A few of you are arguing about things which you don't seem to have read properly.

The latest developments have the club saying Keegan agreed to work under a Director of Football. What they haven't said is that Keegan agreed to work under a Director of Football who would be in charge of player transfers. These are two very different statements. The club has said one thing in the public domain about Keegan having the final say with transfers, but has obviously been doing the opposite behind the scenes - particularly at the end of the transfer window. The claims that Keegan has "bottled it" seems ridiculous - what exactly did he "bottle"? Everything on the pitch was going well, morale in the squad was high, and the only downside this season was the Arsenal result - which was, let's face it, against Arsenal.

Unfortunately, due to the manner in which the upper management have conducted club affairs since Chris Mort's departure, many of us now treat any word coming out of the club with great scepticism, and because of this they will have a hard time swaying public opinion.

For argument's sake, if indeed they did have Bastian Schweinsteiger lined up to replace Milner, this would've been a great move and would've been excellent business all round. The problem is that you have to take the club's word for it, and frankly their stock isn't high enough to do so.

This all seems obvious to anyone who takes a rational look at the situation, so to start speculating about Keegan's personal finances and his motives for taking the job is futile and frankly disrespectful - whether you're behind him or not. Keegan was offered the job and took it, and was doing a good job until this mess. That's all there is to that aspect of the situation.

All I hope is that one way or another this is put to bed sooner rather than later, because the slanging match which is starting will only serve to prolong the club being shown in a negative light in the media. This is counter-productive to everything we all want for the club, which is to continue with an encouraging start to the season and have the media talking about our players on the pitch and not the players in the boardroom.

Isn't it about time, everyone at NUFC (Ashley, Keegan, Wise, Llambias) got together and sorted this 'spat' out for the long term future of our great club.

I am 100% behind KK and his stance against the hierarchy. However, I do not agree when he throws his dummy out of the pram every time there is a minor disagreement. We do not need a manager who single handed, has destroyed any chance of a succesful season by walking away from his players, his supporters who think the world shines out of his backside (me included) and everyone else who love our great club.

We need our local paper (Chronicle/Journal) to demand on behalf of the fans what exactly has gone on and who is right and who is wrong. There is no doubt, blame on both sides but we want to hear the true story (The one not written by a hack from down south who has a hidden agenda against anything in the norther part of the country).

It would be interesting to see Kevin Keegans' contract of employment to see exactly what was stipulated in his contractual duties and if he was supposed to have total control over players in and out, then Wise should not have been bringing in players that KK did not want. On the other hand, if this was not stipulated in his contract he has no gripe against the club.

I am all for a demonstration of some kind(do not buy any merchandise etc from the ground by all means) but it is the team that is going to suffer if we fail to support them. Give the board some stick at half time or give what my missus gives to me in similar treatment (The silent treatment) a deathly hush would be more effective in my view.

There, I feel better for that - get it sorted NUFC.

That being the case we still need to be positive and support the team. This in turn means we need to bring in a "coach" that fits their bill as well as ours.
He will need to feel comfortable working within the restrictions of the current structure, get top results on the pitch without investment in players, play attractive and flowing football, understand and sympathise with local opinion and not be afraid take over in the face of fan's hostility.
I think there is someone out there who can be that man - he's currently in charge at West Brom.

Ted Caster is right Dalglish & Souness did not win anything with Newcastle. But they did win trophies with other clubs. KK has not won a trophy in management at club or international level. It's a shame that he has gone because the club needs stability but he was never the long term answer.
I cannot help wondering whether he knew the restrictions all along but hoped that he would overcome them. He is a dreamer and yet again as with 1997 and with England in 2001 he has run away. You only have to watch his outburst against Ferguson in 1996 to know he never had the maturity to succeed as a manager.
I don't like the way the club is being run but the reality is that it is time to move on. However much we dislike Wise and Ashley they are still there and nothing can move them unless Ashley wants to go.KK has highlighted the down side of being manager of Newcastle so who on earth will now want the job. The best manager at Newcastle over the last 50 years has been Bobby Robson who was building a succesful squad befoe Shepherd pulled the rug from under him. If he had taken over in 1997 instead of Dalglish then we might have had a team to talk about. Unfortunately the club deteriorated in the 2 to 3 years before he took the job and it was a much bigger task than it should have been

The best decision for all is for Ashley to sell up. With the right buyer we will have more money to spend on players than the scraps Ashley has provided. We will have a manager making managers decisions on transfers and contract negotiations. A British Randy Lerner would be ideal. Instead we are stuck with a rich fat man who tries to construct a a management team in an industry where he has no experience.

What on earth is wrong with some people? Can you forget where this club was when KK first arrived, what he did and where he took us?
Stop this insane rubbish about him walking away becuase I doubt anyone one of us would not have done the same at either time. Similarities? Damn right. Three Boards (read owners; McKeag, Hall and now Ashley) whose personal greed got bigger than their desire for the club and us, the fans.
Other than Public Service, let anyone here tell me that their Managers don't interview, select and manage their own employees? Football should not be different and if you think it's the way forward, go live in Spain or Italy. You can 'enjoy' your football there where the succesful clubs ooperate that way only because their 'Boards" pump unlimited resources into them. Can you imagine where we would be if KK had the war chest of Abramovic?
I'll tell you where. We may not be Champions, but we would be on every TV station showing football; highlights of the greatest matches would replay ours, NUFC; instead of remembering, we would be watching those great matches again that KK gave us in the 90's.
I'd settle for that everytime over the dross and drivel we have had to put up with since. One man had a chance to follow and that was Sir Bobby, but of course dour Dalglish had already dismantled the squad KK left and spent the available money.
Shame on you 'fans' that can dismiss that so easily. I for one would be ecstatic if KK came back, had money and time and returned us to being every fans second favourites after their home team.
Name one other manager that has given this club, it's fans and the city, the pride and passion that KK gave us. He had the dream, he keeps the dream and shame on you all for not sharing that.
KK all the way.
