No wonder Big Joe lost his rag

By Lee Ryder on Oct 3, 08 08:06 AM

If you didn't already know, Joe Kinnear is not a man to mince his words.

However, it's a fair bet that most hardened members of the Toon Army will probably understand Big Joe's rant against the national media which resembled something more like a scene from Snatch rather than a Press conference.

But when you scrape away the swear words and see why the new Toon boss went mad, Newcastle fans may see exactly where the Dublin-born manager is coming from.

Basically, Kinnear was fuming over reports in Tuesday's morning papers that the United players were not in training.

But looking back at Kinnear's whirlwind introduction as boss surely some common sense has to be applied.

It isn't like JK has been sat on his backside and the reasons for the day off for Toon players, is fair enough given United's game with Everton was not until Sunday.

Kinnear was announced as manager on Friday morning seven days ago.

He then packed his bag and boarded the next available flight from London to Newcastle and arrived late on Friday night to check into his hotel on Tyneside ahead of last Saturday's game with Blackburn Rovers.

He arrived at the ground early and took time to consult two Newcastle legends in Bob Moncur and Supermac to gather as much information regarding what the feeling was at the club and what the mood of the fans was in their eyes compared to the way it had been portrayed in soap opera style in the national Press.

Kinnear then introduced himself with the players and gave a pep talk ahead of the game.

He spoke to them at half-time and full-time, spoke to the media and dashed for a flight back to London to get the rest of his belongings before returning late Sunday in order to be at the training ground on Monday morning.

Kinnear wanted to use Monday to take in the club's training ground and see exactly what he was working with as well as holding lengthy discussions with coaching staff like Chris Hughton, Paul Barron, Richard Money and Alan Thompson.

His work continued with a watching brief as Newcastle reserves beat Blackburn's second string 2-1 with Kinnear watching the club's youngsters and back-up players at Whitley Park.

His long day came to an end after the final whistle before he woke up to Tuesday's screaming headlines which suggested that Toon players had skipped training on his first full day in charge.

This all came to a head on Thursday morning when Kinnear made the national Press aware of his feelings and in no uncertain terms as to how he plays the game.

Here is what happened at yesterday's Press conference.

Kinnear said: "I haven't come here for people to take the **** out of me. And if I'm not flavour of the month, it don't ******* bother me.

"I'm ridiculed for no reason. I'm defenceless. I can't get a point in, I can't say nothing, I can't do nothing. But I ain't going to be negative.

"I've a job to do. And I'm going to do it to the best of my ability and get on with it. I'm not going to spend any more time listening to any ****.

"I'm as straight as they come but I will stand up and fight for myself in any corner. You're not going to **** me off or frighten me.

"Whatever you do or whatever headlines run, you're not going to embarrass me. I'm not going to stand for it. I've come up here for a simple chance to ****** prove myself.

"Just wait and make a decision after whatever period of time you want. That's fine. Until then, get off my back and let me get on with my job. That's all I ask of you.

"Whatever happens, the only way I'm going to win anything is by getting results. And it's still going to be negative, negative, negative.

"You are so ******* slimy. You are raking up players I got rid of, players I had fallen out with.

"You are not asking Robbie Earle, because he is sensible. You are not asking Warren Barton? No. Because he is ******* sensible.

"Anyone who has played for me for 10 years at any level, you will find some **** that says something. I don't have to hide anything."

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

About time he only said what most of us have been thinking for the past 15 years, Some of the stuff written by these hacks is downright lies, and until now everyone was scared to answer back.JFK also brings a large dose of reality to the club and the players reminding them of what the real world is like.

Well done Joe stand your ground.

Billy Heats said:

Its about time someone from the club stood up to the southern club biased press and I for one am happy with everything he has come out and said.

Certain areas of the press are allowed to get away with writing so much nonsense that only reflects badly on the club and quite often it makes everyone involved with the club, right down to the fans, look like idiots.

Lets hope he installs some of his passion in the dressing room and we get a fighting performance from the lads at the weekend.

Brilliant !! Even KK didn't have a go at the press like that. Respect Joe lad, give them it back they've been knocking NUFC and the geordie nation for a long long time, about time someone stood up to them and told it how it is.

well done Joe ! you have finally said what we've wanted to for a long time .only we don't get the chance to.

HATS OFF TO YOU MATE WELCOME TO THE TOON

HEY IF THE 11 PLAYERS HE PUTS ON THE PITCH SUNDAY COME OUT FIGHTING LIKE HE HAS DONE WITH THE PRESS, GETTING A RESULT SHOULD NOT BE PROBLEM.
WE HAVE TO GET BEHIND JOE 101%, THE PLAYERS HAVE GOT TO SHOW THE PASSION HE HAS SHOWN,
THE DEFENDERS HAVE GOT TO DO THE SIMPLE THINGS, IF IT MEANS BOOTING THE BALL INTO ROW Z, SO BE IT, WERE GETTING HAMMERED FOR EVERY BLUNDER.
WE SHOULD SCOUR THE MARKET FOR SOME LOAN SIGNINGS IS ASHLEY WILL ALLOW IT,(SOMEHOW CANT SEE IT).
JUST GOT A FEELING WERE GONNA GET A RESULT SUNDAY.

Admiral Colly said:

It’s good to see/hear someone from the club talking (f*****g) straight. We’ve had silence from Ashley, wise & Co., spin from Mort, and uncomfortable wriggling from poor KK for so long that it’s refreshing to hear JK speak as he did. Whatever the national press think of his credentials, I’m pleased to see the fight he will bring. His straight talking and blunt approach only serve to emphasise how inadequate Wise and Jiminez have been up to now. I know it’s difficult to see silver linings right now, but at least the careers of Wise & Co. Have been damaged by the way they’ve carried on. They could not have a better job in making themselves unemployable. Who’d want them now? Let’s hope that a sensible bidder (decent price, decent people, decent plan) wins the bidding process. The last thing we need now is to find that Ashley has sold the club to ego trippers or profiteers.
On the downside, if rumours are correct, we can now write off our investment in Michael Owen. No-one can blame him for refusing to sign a new deal in the midst of this chaos. Let’s hope we’ve got a settled situation by January 1st, so that we can make a reasoned decision as to whether to try to sell him then, or keep him until the end of the season. I guess that this may be dictated by our league position as much as anything else.

JK was dead right. He has passion, now let's see the players show as much on the pitch.

Mac said:

Inspired. He keeps showing passion like this he'll get the job full time. I think he's trying to recreate the Crazy Gang atmosphere. Backs to the wall, everybody hates us and we don't care. Either way it all had to be said. It's just regrettable that in doing so he's given the worms a story to fill their rag papers.

halfmanhalfkeebab said:

Fair play to the man. He's talking the talk which most of us agree with and support. If we can get something at Goodison on Sunday then there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. Incidently, I didn't realise we had fallen so far from grace that we were actually considering re-signing the pub footballer Carr! Are things really that bad?

Mike said:

Lee,

I understand Joe's frustration, and its about time the southern media got told where to go, I just wish he could have "negotiated" with them in a less hostile way, because we know he isn't going to get any favours from them now.

Trouble is, the media will always have the last laugh in these exchanges, because they get to spread their half truths and downright lies throughout the land and sadly most people don't like to think independently, so believe everything they read and repeat it adnorsium until it becomes engrained as fact.

Hence the perpetuated myth that Newcastle fans are delusional when it comes to their expectations of the team.

Davey said:

Monday, first day in the job, who do you want to meet? The players! He didn't have to get them into training, but he should have got them in to explain what was going on, what he expected, and how the rest of the week was going to pan out. Sorry, but he lost the plot on Football Focus last Saturday, he lost the plot yesterday, and he's going to be with us longer than the end of October - or is it 8 games (end of November)? At least he's talking, but what's coming out of his gob is garbage! Moaning on about Dennis Wise - no-one said he managed Wise! Moaning on about him giving the players the day off - no-one said that. He's cracked, twice, under the pressure of the job and he's been here less than a week!

bob harvey said:

I see the man from the Mirror tried to back out by saying he didn't write the headlines!
Time to stop mincing words.
"Big Joe's Black and White Army"!

Deaco said:

You have to admire his comments. Big Joe has been given this opportunity and the club is in a mess through no fault of his. We all need to back him to the hilt during his tenure at NUFC.
Lets make sure he knows we back him!

craig banister said:

probably made more friends in 10 minutes than he'd dare to believe...well done sir, about time they got that....for the first time having a short contract with no bridges to build has worked for him.

V Profane said:

The man's an idiot and he's just ASKED, no BEGGED, for a whole load more hostile reporting on himself and NUFC. He keeps showing his vulnerability, he keeps coming out with dubious 'facts' that get thrown back in his face. I hope he holds the press to his threat and doesn't speak to them any more from now on. He looks less the ringmaster, more the clown.

deano said:

Its about time someone told the southern press where to go. Lies, lies and more lies. All the toon fans are sick of reading about newcastle on the front page of the sun or mirror or some other national rubbish so top marks to JFK for sticking it to them. I think this will have a positive effect with the players and fans, hopefully we can once again unite against everton and pick up a much needed win.
Come on Joe, well done!!!

Sy said:

I agree wholeheartedly with what many have said above in support of Joe. I for one have found it thoroughly refreshing to have an open and honest man telling the fans what's happening at the club, and I'm delighted that Joe has stood up for himself and the club.

The national press clearly know nothing about what's really going on at Newcastle United, yet they arrogantly assume they do and write about it. I don't know anything about quantum physics, so I don't ****** talk about it. Certain journalists should either follow the same principles or at least speak to people who do know what they're talking about.

Again, well done Joe, and good luck to you.

JC said:

The press have been ridiculous, right now it is any excuse to take a pop at us. If the players show half the fight of Joe on Sunday, I think we'll head back north with some points. As fans we need to realise that right now, everyone is hoping we fail, we're a big club who they all know should be minimum top 6, relegation would set us back five years and they would all love it. If only those players that pulled on the shirt felt the passion we all do then we wouldn't be in this mess. Lets all get behind Joe, lets chant his name home and away and show the press that no matter what they try to pull, we're behind this club and we're behind our manager!

"I see the man from the Mirror tried to back out by saying he didn't write the headlines!"

Bob, journalists don't usually write the headlines - that's left to an editor or subbie. As much as I like seeing journos having to eat humble pie, there hasn't been a factually incorrect story printed about JK this week. He, on the other hand, can't recall what he read or when he read it. He's struggling for dates, names, facts! Heaven help us! Read the full, unedited transcript on The Guardian - NUFC didn't want the story coming out, and the journos would have had to abide by that decision, but JK said he wanted it to come out in print!

Bill B said:

Admiral Colly, I don't thinl Wise & Jiminy Cricket are unemployable, Ashley will make them Managers of a Sport Direct outlet selling NUFC shirts! As for JK great to see the passion. I agree with others in hoping he can transfer that passion to the dressing room.

Suen said:

tell it like it is Joe! be honest, and you will have my full support.

Bill said:

I have to compliment JK for being brutally honest and conveying to the "journalists" what he, and the fans, think about the lies/nonsense/ravings/mischief making that pollutes a lot of the tabloids.

If this passion and fervour can be transferred to the players we might get something out of the game on Sunday.

Haway the Toon.

Paul said:

V Profane and co , you have a nerve to get on Kinnears back after giving the southern media circus the mouthfull they deserve?
Your obviously one of the clowns that believe what they print, take a hike back down to your cockney mates divvies your not welcome here.

Paul said:

Joe has stood up to the rubbish printed in the press on behalf of Newcastle fans - good on him

ian pyle said:

Brilliant stuff. It needed saying. Some of the Media now believe they have a right to run everybody`s life and no-one may criticise them.

Vin Moran said:

He has created a 'seige mentality' - exactly what any team needs at a time like this. Have at em joe!

Mexicola said:

Got to be honest here, I was probably as guilty as most of writing JK off from day one. Well, if nothing else, he has gone up in my estimation with that press conference. If he can put some of that fire into the players we might just do ok. Consider my judgement reserved, with a new-found respect for the fella. Maybe it IS time to stop whining and get behind the lads, including JK. It's not ideal, no. But at least the guy seems honest. And right now, I'll take that. Howay the lads!

STEVE said:

BIG JOE K....well said that man....hats off to you.....we need a man with bol####s just now....stick it up em son....you are winning friends....now for a result or 2...

Brian Moorhead said:

No Toon fan would feel bad about slagging off the press after the disgraceful reporting we see these days, Joe is right, they print anything they hear with no checking on factual content. Good sports journalism is dead.

That includes the sucking up done in the chronicle after he said that he would only deal with local papers.

Can't tell if this is Joe trying to get the fans on his side or if he is feeling the pressure after less than a week in charge. Time and defeats will tell.

Brian: Supporting a new manager who has yet to pick his first team is hardly sucking up. Big Joe was the one who decided which papers he will speak to.

Nick said:

I live in London, not a NUFC fan, but have despaired over recent news reports concerning your club. sad to see you in such a sorry state. I really hope JK can turn a corner for Newcastle, he clearly sounds like he has the passion to motivate unhappy players. I do think they is both a southern bias and bias towards the big clubs, some of the coverage of Arsenal Vs Hull last weekend were really patronising and suggested that Arsenal had a bad day at the office not that HC had a great game plan.

Best of luck everyone, upwards and onwards!

Andrew Davis said:

I love i love it and rock on joe rock on......

To hear the mirror bloke chirp on and on and i have to say when the last time that idiot managed an exclusive on a signing or any major story...

He always steals storys from the big two lads (Ryder and Oliver).

The good news is that he is not banned and he will be on the touchline on sunday and lets get excited and its going to be a ride and lets get the 3 points lads...

Dreadful. We used to laugh at Pey-ter Reid swearing on that documentary about Sunderland. Now we have our own monkey. At the moment, the southern press are actually right.

James 09 said:

Joe seems like an awfully earnest guy who will do his very best possible for us and for that we should be grateful. The buck for the current situation and beyond ultimately rests with one man – Mike Ashley. Could he run a successful bath at Newcastle United?? I think not. However...

NUFC are literally in dying need of some semblance of leadership and resilience - on and off the pitch. Yes he may have just executed a wonderful plot to implement a siege mentality. But....he may have also proven what terribly thin skin he has. Thin skin is exactly what NUFC do not need right now.

Can you imagine his reaction if this all goes horribly wrong after 3 games and the "vicious" lot at SJP start bellowing "you don't know what you're doing JFK", "taxi for JFK"? Will it be – ‘which one is a Newcastle supporter?’ Umm we all are, “you’re all c***s.” Brilliant.

Sean - Liverpool Fan said:

Good man Joe. About time the press got back what they give out. Good luck to you mate as I know most of the Liverpool fans I know are right behind you and hopefully you will get the club back where it belongs.

ronnie lambert said:

Well done Joe lad, it was long overdue. I haven't bought a red-top for decades, always preferring my journal and chronicle, and for truthful world news, internet freepress. But these scurrilous reporters have unconscionably attacked our club and us geordies without good reason for much too long. They'll definitely treat him with respect now, or be shown the door, and who will care? they just make it up anyway. I've always liked 'the man' Joe Kinnear even though like you Lee, I was underwhelmed at his appointment. He's definitely won the fans over without a ball being kicked. Hopefully his passion has inspired the players in the same way. I love how he's made them look at and talk about stupid individual mistakes that alone have cost us points. I love how he's asked Xisco why he wasn't on the end of Duff's crosses, and probably others' mistakes too. Souness wouldn't have a wrong word said against his squad's mistakes, wrapping them up in cotton wool, in fact burying his head in the sand got him buried in the end. I like Joe's honesty, he's very much like his predecessor, in fact when the new owners come in, depending on JK's success here, I'd like to see him given at least a coaching job, even with Keegan. He could at easily be the PR man to the press, I mean seriously, without the ham sandwich he's a very good talker for post-match interviews etc.

M. Sebastian T. said:

Seems to me that it is pretty sad that backing Big Joe is so popular because it seems to me that he is being as reckless off the pitch as the players are on it. Ranting on will do nothing to stop the ridicule from elsewhere, but a good result tomorrow might help.

My expectation is that at least one Toon player will take the hothead approach and get sent off against Everton. Then it will be backs to the wall and end up as probably a 1-0 loss to another struggling club.

So much as people might like to cheer him I think Joe needs to zip up his lips!

tempo said:

gud on ye joe show them how its done mate. youve got balls

Are all these replies made up? Kinnear is a laughing stock just right for a laughing stock club supported by people with their heads up their own you know whats

Steve said:

Well done Mr Kinnear sir.
The gutter press are not employed to break big news stories.
They are employed to work with their “Editors” and push the envelop as far as possible with damming half truths aimed at damaging individuals and associations , stopping short of leaving the “Newspaper” open for legal action.
It’s a shame the TV cameras didn’t stay to capture the moment.
