Kinnear can still call the tune in Toon

By Lee Ryder on Nov 5, 08 10:21 AM

The tones of Keith Harris' trombone may well be drifting out in the background of the soap opera that is Newcastle United but on the field Joe Kinnear could be in danger of winning the job on a permanent basis.

New owners may well have their own ideas but with no new owners pulling up on Barrack Road in the short-term, Kinnear remains in the box seat for the job no matter who is in charge - providing the results are right.

Like Glenn Roeder did in 2006 he could "win the job" because if he can get United into a respectable position in the Premier League amidst these circumstances what could he do with financial backing?

And in the interests of fairness, even new owners may have to stick with Kinnear if they see the benefit of continuity to begin with.

When Mike Ashley took over in 2007, he didn't make a rash decision and even though Sam Allardyce's job was under the microscope on the basis he was not the Toon tycoon's appointment, he was still backed to an extent.

And he only lost his job after a bad run of results that may have even tempted Freddy Shepherd to call time on Big Sam's stint with fans protesting furiously over a style of play we know that the former chairman would not have approved.

Kinnear has done a solid job in difficult circumstances.

You did fear for him after the derby day defeat against Sunderland but two wins on the spin have helped his cause.

Nobody is getting carried away but the signs are good given the circumstances that surround what has been a nightmare season at times.

Let's be honest, nobody would be surprised if Newcastle were rock bottom of the table and top stars had slapped in transfer requests in the style of Leeds United.

But as it stands they aren't bottom at the moment, and he seems to have at least got the attention of our top players, Kinnear must surely take a little bit of credit for that after steadying the ship?

With three away games in the next four games coming up it could well be a very different story for JK in the not so distant future - and he knows better than anybody his stay on Tyneside is based only on results.

Yet given that he is basically on trial and on trial in front of the world given that all of his games so far have been beamed live around the planet, with Fulham also on the box, Kinnear has done well.

Chuck into it that he has done it with positive football going forward, which has also been the case at reserve and youth team levels if you check recent results and performances, Kinnear deserves the support he is currently enjoying from the Toon Army.

But an even bigger accolade could be on the way if he can keep it up, whether or not Mr Ashley stays in charge.

CAN JOE KINNEAR WIN THE JOB AT ST JAMES'S PARK?

I think one of the greatest testaments to the job JFK is doing is that the players are quite visibly working hard for the team and enjoying it to boot.

Lee,
Is there any chance of getting something sorted out with captcha as my submissions are being swallowed for no apparent reason? I noticed a similar request to Luke's blog

90 MINUTES IN THE LIFE OF A NEWCASTLE SUPPROTER… My mind started rotating on a series of highs and lows that I have experienced by having supported my beloved club Newcastle since the start of this season. Sure, there are the years of mid-table mediocrity when my club isn’t really going anywhere but, even then, there are the heart in mouth moments each game that I witness when what might have been just fails to be. Despite this, my thoughts kept focusing on the ideal of MY LAST CHANT and this started to intensify my emotions a few minutes before kick-off against Aston Villa. I felt a positive energy flow through the stands from the passionate whispers of the Geordie faithful as though I had been taken back in time. Its just a game, they say. Yeah, like breathing is just sucking in and blowing out air – but if you dont do it you will die. Sitting in Saint James Park is an experience rather than an average destination because despite the fog that has clouded our light, the spirit and faith and passion of the fans engulfs me, you and all football fans in a moment of pure and complete admiration for Newcastle United! So the last couple of weeks in Newcastle has been a rollercoaster ride for all of us who love the Toon Army. Yet, the absolute euphoria of gaining a 2nd victory in a row, climbing off the foot of the table, leaping over Sunderland and climbing 6 places in the premiership became a desire that burnt like an uncontrollable fire within me and all for a game that involves kicking about a ball up and down a field of grass as some non football supporters would put it. Bizarre, isnt it? But if youre a passionate football fan you will understand what I am saying. Whilst my thoughts were digging deeper beneath me, I heard the referee blow the whistle for kick-off and suddenly I was swarmed with a sound wave that shattered my fears of defeat instantly. I was, as always, instantly transformed into a soldier of the Toon Army and with every inch of my soul I joined the swarm by CHANTING “NEWCASTLE” as though it were my last ever CHANT as a fan. Despite the nervous start that our players made, every chant hindered the progress of Aston Villa as though an invisible 12th man was shielding our players in preparation for the second half. By half-time I knew that it was time to open the flood gates and with a handful of supporters I CHANTED MY LAST CHANT my voicing “ONE OBAFEMI”, “THERES ONLY ONEEEE OBAFEMI”! My fellow supporters felt a sense of urgency to slice open Aston Villa and the roars of Geordie passion engulfed the stadium wave after wave after wave. Suddenly, come 60 minutes of CHANT AFTER LAST CHANT, Martins scored an absolute beauty and Hiroshima fell upon Aston Villa leaving a permanent scar on their confidence. I CHANTED MY LAST CHANT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN to the tune of the 46,000 MAGPIES which almost put me in a permanent hypnosis of absolute joy! The match continued and I sat feeling stunned to see former wounded players of the past having risen to the occasion and playing for every inch of the pitch as though their lives depended on it such as Duff, Enrique and Ameobi. As a new chapter was about to open in my life as a supporter of Newcastle I felt that the 1-0 scoreline was just not enough for me and just like every other Geordie that fire continued to burn and we craved more. Our voices seemed to lift the players back into gear and opportunities went missing on both sides. Suddenly on 83 minutes, Martins locked on goal and put the fatal final wound in Aston Villas defeat. The celebration of the second goal felt like an eternity and it felt as though this world was the perfect place to be in, the Saint James Park world. The final whistle blew and my LAST CHANT was uttered one last time before we all went our separate ways. Now, I feel that MY LAST CHANT had it been my last, will be remembered in so many ways, yet most importantly in the result that surfaced from the input of our players, management and us, the fans! Thank you Newcastle United for allowing me to CHANT amongst so many fans in a voice that once again has been restored to its historic identity, A UNITED CHANT from NEWCASTLE UNITED!

The real test comes in the away games. Newcastle's away record is poor, so lets see if JK can do anything about that before we start thinking about full time.
I pesonally would not give Owen a long term contract, he is a great goalscorer but increasingly suspect to niggling injuries and you would not want to be paying huge wages with him in the treatment room. Perhaps a pay by appearances.
Barton is a loose cannon, whether it was overblown or not, with his record and the current climate you do not raise your hand to an opponent. You also do not go over the top with studs showing. Whether he can cut this out I doubt, especially as he is a decent player. Its just a matter of time in my book before the mist reappears.

i think we have to except owen is going maybe january but definately at the end of season.
i hope the given stories are untrue, but if he does go i would wish him well and would hope he could get some silverware, as no one deserves it more.
i think if this regime stays, the likes of jonas, colloccini, martins will be very hard to keep as others will come calling, and who could blame them if they decide to move on.
i really dont think we should rush into giving joe a long term contract just yet, lets see were we are after the long winter, but i give him massive credit for the big improvement in effort and peformance since he has been here.

Flippin' heck Yianni, 'War and Peace' or what? I thought I was long winded and passionate but you are now the champion bonny lad. Wey aye son we all had that electricity coarsing through our nerve ends, it was visibly tangible, bordering on hysteria but it was the best atmosphere since we 'had' the mackems here last year. I've always been an optimist by nature but I have a good gut-feeling about wor Joe. Though I bought my recent season ticket on the strength of KK, or my faith in his managing qualities, I don't think he could have done better than JFK in our last 3 home games with this squad and it's frailties. I wonder what's holding the fans back from chanting JOE KINNEAR'S BLACK AND WHITE ARMY, maybe getting into the EUFA cup or winning the FA cup? ......2nd try at captcha after getting it spot on.

Suggestion for the lad complaining about losing his comment, which has happened to me and probably stacks more ..... when rejected, don't follow the advice at the foot of the column, press the blue revers arrow at the top of your screen, just below
'FILE' and it takes you back to your comments. Then just highlight the 'failed' captcha sequence and print in the new one. It always works for me, even though my first attempt is spot on. Another way to save your comment, in case, is to highlight it before you press publish - hold down 'control' whilst pressing 'C' on your keypad. This saves it in your PC memory. Then if your comments are 'swallowed up'. Then if it's lost, return to comment box - left click in box - hold down 'control' as you press 'V' and your 'saved' comment will re-appear in box. Keep doing this until it works, or smash your screen in with a mug of tea.

owen can leave; martins is much more reliable and consistant, therefore i think we should lock martins for another 4 years.

viduka can leave; ameobi is not as good, but at least he can play a string of games.

given absolutely can NOT leave; who knows where we'd be if it weren't for him.

credit must be given to wise and co for jonas and coloccini. we still haven't seen xisco nor gonzalez play, but i have a good feeling about them.

we need (for seasons now) another left-back, a right back, and an attacking midfielder who can create that final killer pass (and with barton protecting behind him). lets face the facts; butt is past it. he's a 45min man now.

is there any hope left in smith?

Hi Lee,

I agree that JFK should get a longer contract and only when as others have mentioned this that that the away record is better.

We have Fulham and Wigan next and we should get something from those games and i would jinx us and say ... ...

The lads are fighting for the cause and Fabio in defence worries me as he seems to get beaten a lot and we seem loose.

I think Given and Owen will leave as its been on the cards for a while and i think that Given deserves a club that can win something and spurs.......you are having a laugh and maybe arsenal but no way to go to man u.

Lets win the next couple of games and lets get to the chelsea game and see what is said.

I also wonder Lee if the bid is from Kuwait as that has been speculated.

Thank god it's not the nigerians as they are a joke and the SA as well and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Regardless of our end of season position; I expect quite a lot of our squad to depart.Ashley is a complete misfit and cant wait to leave town. OWEN,VIDUKA,BUTT,N,ZOGBIA,AMIOBE,CACAPA & SMITH, will all be gone; Given, might even think; "its time to move on".The club is at a cross roads and as usual, will take the wrong turning...De ja vous...

i hope joey does,nt screw this chance up, because i think we have seen more than enough over the last two games, what a player he could be for us, and if he can channel the aggression and walk away and rise above the provication, he will be a fantastic asset to this club, because when he gets up to full match fitness, i honestly believe this lad could be up with the best of em in this country, but only if he becomes totally dedicated.

Great stuff, Yianni. What are you on and where can one get it if one's not at the match ?

JK has done a very admirable job so far and seems a top bloke to boot. But sorry to burst the bubble, I can see him doing a Roeder - yea win the job and then garbage.

46,000 is getting pretty low lads.

The sheer brass neck of Dennis Wise is unbelievable. Hides away for two months then re-appears at a reserve game after JK and the lads have got things back on track. He then has the gall to claim that he is going to bring the German equivalent of Xisco to SJP to replace the current England leading scorer whose departure he has been instrumental in causing. Whether Ashley sells the club or not he must get rid of this poison dwarf and his buddy Lambias immediately, whatever the cost in both personal and financial terms. If not what odds on JK being here after January 31st

Let's get this into perspective, the season starts, KK gets a result at Manu U,wins against Bolton and loses at Arsenal when there was obviously ructions behind the scenes. It all goes pear-shaped. Hughton does a disastrous interim job and then Kinnear comes in and has a mediocre time but gets all this praise when not even looking like achieving the confident and attractive looking team KK had at the start of the season. We still can't beat anyone around us so will be in the bottom 3 or thereabouts for the rest of the season. If you want to give him a long term contract you must have short memories because Roeder's mediocrity also attracted a long term contract. The club is going down the pan and Kinnear is spouting the same rubbish as KK was forced to come out with prior to the last transfer window when talking about potential new signings. Are we so blinkered (or desperate)that we can't see that on January 30th we'll still be getting the old 'these things take time to sort' and that little twit Wise will bring some non-entity Spaniard to join the other non-entities he's brought in who wouldn't know a relegation scrap if it smacked them in the face. We needed PL experience this year and that's what KK was after but the lords of darkness were intent on ruining our club. Shame on those who have not boycotted, shame on those meekly allowing Wise to weasel his way back to SJP and shame on those who would even contemplate sharing our once great stadium with a fat southerner who's only goal in life now is to humiliate us for forcing him to pretend to sell.

Lets not all lose focus here...we are 4th off bottom...still in deep doo doo...and still no closer to getting rid of Mike ashley...th system he hs in place is strangling this club...we cant move forward until hes gone...its going to be interesting to see what he does in the transfer window...if he reallt wants to appease the fans ...the january window is the time to do it....as for joe kineear...the bloke has done ok...but Newcastle united still need a top class coach to move us forward....Joe kinnear reminds me of glenn roeder too much..and hes definitly a mike ashley mouthpiece....hes doing ok but we are still heading backwards in my eyes! Why is it that Mike Ashley still thinks his approach is right? He has never given us fans what we have deserved or wanted from day one. Joe kinnear is always Mike ashleys man so the sooner they both go the better! Is anyone having fun yet?

Expat Mag in Oz said:

Can everyone still going on about KK just get over it and reliase KK is gone and not coming back, which I beleive is a good thing because when the going got tough he hit the door running, so much for loving the club and the fans.
I think Joe could be good for the club, I'm sure no one would have thought of him as the best man for the job but you never know. he doesn't take any crap and tells it how its instead of blowing smoke up the arses of overpaid prima-donnas.
