United throw it away at St James's Park

By Lee Ryder on Dec 6, 08 05:05 PM

EX-TOON defender Abdoulaye Faye returned to St James's Park to haunt Newcastle United after netting a dramatic equaliser for Stoke City.

The player who had been sold by United in the summer pounced late on with the points looking certain to go to Joe Kinnear's side after they had built up a 2-0 half-time lead.

Two strikes from Michael Owen had put Newcastle well and truly in the driving seat against the Potters but a stunning comeback from Stoke with goals from Abdoulaye Faye and Mamady Sidibe meant there was little festive spirit in the air on Tyneside.

Nicky Butt was missing for Kinnear's side with the midfielder missing out with a hamstring injury and Geremi taking his place.

United made a bright start to the game when Charles N'Zogbia made a good run down the left before cracking a powerful shot just wide of Thomas Sorensen's goal with three minutes on the clock.

This was followed up three minutes later when Jonas rolled it to Michael Owen but Sorensen easily gathered his tame shot on the turn.

However, the Dane had no answer to the duo's efforts 60 seconds after the attack as Owen and Jonas combined to hand Newcastle the lead at Gallowgate.

The Argentine threaded the ball through for the United captain who guided an angled shot from the right into the bottom corner.

Rory Delap's first throw-in of the afternoon arrived on 10 minutes but with little room to manoeuvre at St James's Park - due to the proximity of the sponsor boards - the ball was gathered comfortably by Shay Given.

On 23 minutes Owen doubled his account for the afternoon after another well worked move.

Oba Martins latched on to Geremi's weighted pass deep on the left before rolling it across the six-yard box for Owen who stabbed it home at the back post.

There was a change for the Magpies at the start of the second period with Steven Taylor replacing first half injury victim Danny Guthrie.

The reshuffle meant Taylor was fielded as a right-back with Beye pushed up the right wing and Jonas pulled across into the centre of midfield.

Taylor made his presence felt with a blockbusting tackle on 52 minutes after Mamady Sidibe had slipped in Richard Cresswell with the Stoke man denied after a perfect interception by the Academy product.

The long throw threat of Delap was removed from the equation ahead of the hour when Stoke boss Tony Pulis hooked the ex-Carlisle man for Ricardo Fuller.

It was a move that paid instant dividends for Pulis as Fuller got to the by-line down the right and squared it for Sidibe who converted from close range to haul the Potters back into it at 2-1 on 60 minutes.

That dented United's bid for three successive clean sheets and also set up a tense final half hour.

Newcastle made another change with 16 minutes to go when Mark Viduka replaced Martins after the Nigerian had put in an excellent display for the black and whites.

With seven minutes left former Magpie Andy Griffin was cautioned after a late challenge on Jonas.

Newcastle looked nervous in the closing stages with the Geordie nation getting behind their side but Stoke still looked capable of carving out chances.

And in the first minute of the allotted five minutes of stoppage time a free-kick from Glenn Whelan resulted in an unmarked Abdoulaye Faye sweeping home at Gallowgate to make it 2-2.

In the closing stages bungling ref Mike Riley got in the way of a Newcastle attack to sum up a frustrating day for the home side.

UNITED: Given, Beye, Coloccini, Bassong, Enrique, Jonas, Geremi (Cacapa 83), Guthrie (Taylor 46), N'Zogbia, Owen, Martins.

STOKE: Sorensen, Griffin, Higginbotham, Cresswell, Sidibe, Pugh, Diao (Whelan 21), Amdy Faye (Tonge 79), Delap (Fuller 57), Abdoulaye Faye, Sonko.

Are you ready for a sharp dose of realism?
I have been to every match this season and whoever is in charge of coaching should be sacked forthwith. The Toon were an absolute shambles against an extremely poor Stoke side.In the second half we were no better than a bunch of schoolboys. Please don't anyone tell me about our point at Chelsea etc.We are a shambles-Hughton is clueless and Kinnear is not much better.
Prepare for the Championship-that may be our next port of call and if we happen to avoid the drop it will be through good luck not good management.

Clueless substitution of Viduka for Martins yet again. I'm not saying Owen should've come off (though Martins was more of a threat) - there was simply no need to bring Viduka on and when he appeared, he contributed nothing. When Guthrie had to go off, we were all over the place; it was like watchinga different place. Kinnear and Hughton haven't got a clue. The numpties can get behind JFK all you like, but you're wrong. The way we played in the second half, we didn't deserve to win, even if the free kick should never have been given.

Having had to change at half time , why not revert to 3-5-2

Taylor, Colo and Basson would have been able to cope with the aerial problems, Beye and Enrique could have dealt with the flanks leaving 3 in a solid central midfield and the two main strikers up front . No need to chase the game , keep it solid and combat the main threat . Surely a man of JFK experience could see that or perhaps sometimes they're just blind to the obvious

I don't believe JFK is to blame. Our Board is to blame for not backing us with funds in the summer. If we would have had funds we would have had other options for when Guthrie HAD TO come off. Really annoying as I was about to celebrate the win only to realize ANOTHER EX NUFC Player scores late on to mess us all up. We played extremely well in the first half. Sadly though our WEAK MIDFIELD let them get at us. We had no answer to their attacks as we had no midfield capable of stopping their play and providing our forwards with chances. I am gutted but I still believe JFK has done a great job considering the circumstances. HE NEEDS TO BE BACKED. We can't start pleading to the board for his sacking!! NOT AGAIN! WE NEED STABILITY FOR ONCE!! PATIENCE PEOPLE PATIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, our threadbare squad is exposed again , with Guthrie's injury the turning point. Personally, I wouldn't have re-organised the way we did. I think the 3-5-2 suggestion above would've been a better idea. At the time, I would've replaced Guthrie with Viduka (who was always going to feature regardless of on-field performances), dropped Martins back to play from the left, pushed N'Zogbia into the centre (where he featured in pre-season) with Geremi which would've allowed Jonas to stay on the flank where he was playing well.

A big disappointment though. I certainly hope this isn't lost on Ashley who must reinforce the squad in January. I'm just concerned that we only seem to be talking about two players, because that simply won't be enough given our injury record.

Exactly. Unfortunately, no-one had the tactical nous to do this.

A few other points need to be taken into consideration, however: when Stoke scored, confidence disappeared and we stopped chasing and harrying, with the notable and noble exception of Jonas, who was surely MOTM, regardless of what the sponsors thought.

Coloccini now seems to be afraid to tackle in the box since the decision went against him earlier in the season. I thought he was easily our most impressive centre back back then, but he's gone off the boil and has been surpassed by Bassong and Taylor.

Charlie's been given his chance, but he needs to run at defenders more than he did. Having said that, I'd take him over Duff any day in that position...

The substitution of Matins was an appaling mistake by our over-egged manager.

Shocking result. As soon as we go ahead no matter what the goal gap, I always expect the opposition to get a good chance to get back into the game, yesterday was no exception. The team seem to think they've done enough and sit back and allow pressure.

It would seem the contract rebels are getting games even when they dont warrant it. Is this jk trying to keep them sweet hoping they'll sign another contract? If we could get replacements in I'd let them all go, what would we be losing? The only difficult 1 would be owen. Ok he doesn't play a full season but Id trust him to score over any of our other strikers. Is he worth £100k+ a week for half a season? His goals yesterday were or we'd be even more in the brown stuff!

LETS FACE IT WITH THE CURRENT MANAGEMENT AND OWNER SHIP WE ARE NEVER GOING TO LAST 90 MINUTES TRYING TO PLAY 2 WAY FOOTBALL. ANYONE WHO TAKE OFF A FIT STRIKER AND PUTS ON A FAT USELESS AUSSIE IS OBVIOUSLY NOT A GOOD MANAGER. JK WILL ALWAYS BE AN ASHLEY PUPPET AS HE HAS NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. PLEASE MAKE ONE TRANSFER AHLEY AND HIS BAND TO ANYWHERE
