Same ****, different manager

By Lee Ryder on Jan 19, 09 06:16 PM

Joe Kinnear may have been wrong to have a go at the "failings" of Kevin Keegan and Sam Allardyce but the fact that the ex-Wimbledon boss is showing signs of losing patience with the current regime at Newcastle United has to be another worrying factor in a season in which most Toon fans are already climbing the walls with anxiety.

Kinnear - rightly or wrongly - has been the official spokesperson/manager of the club since being appointed back in September and to his credit has done his best to shed some light on the current situation at St James's Park.

Last season Chris Mort did the same job, and even the unpopular Freddy Shepherd before him, but Kinnear is also pulling off a balancing act and picking the team at the same time.

And with both positions carrying high stress levels, football manager and chairman, it surely was only a matter of time before those strains came to a head.

That happened at Blackburn.

Injuries and lack of transfer reinforcements were a big factor in Newcastle eventually going down 3-0.

The crowd reacted with a string of chants directed at Joe Kinnear including: "Joe Kinnear, you're having a laugh", "Keegan Wonderland" and "Ashley out" - and for every action there's a reaction.

Kinnear's was to point the finger at KK and Big Sam but after the heat of the battle died down on Saturday perhaps he would face up to the problems that are putting the club in danger of going down.

The problem has been simply a lack of willingness to communicate with their fans and a reluctance to stump up a few quid to get some new players in, which are desperately needed right now.

Cleary so far the Ashley regime has been a case of enjoying the highs (being toasted as a saviour in the Bigg Market shortly after Shepherd's departure) but shirking the lows with the Toon tycoon shutting shop almost since the protests following Keegan's exit.

Throw into the pot that Shay Given, Michael Owen and Charles N'Zogbia seem to have had enough and you begin to get the picture.

It's a nightmare for Newcastle fans and one that is in danger of getting worse.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I've been a supporter for over 50 years now, and apart from a couple of seasons it's usually like this. Start full of optimism, plans for Europe, then poor results, the lack of squad depth or quality, no big signings, blame the board, board sack manager, thankful we don't get relegated.

Davey Mac said:

As Ashley has already left the building will the last supporter put the lights out please.

I too have been a supporter for over 50 years and this may well be the worst of them. It could be a long way back!

Enough. (That is until sanity returns!)

Tell Joe that the lack of cover in all positions is why Kevin walked out or doesn't he read the papers? spend some gambling funds on man city dissatisfied players Ashley, or copy Rednapps lead who's spending all the money generated by his MASSIVE home support! it's a joke

chris said:

Another supporter for the last 50 years.....yes this is the worst!
Ashley is scared that he'll go broke, so won't put in any money. He can't find a buyer so is playing wait and see. what he doesn't realise is that if the club goes down he'll never get his money back until the "young stars of the future" grow up. So give or take another 5 to 10 years by which time we'll be on our 4 or 5th manager and I'll have probably left this earth.
In times of crisis the brave hearted win thru so Ashley PLEASE INVEST another 20 to 25 Million !! That way you'll protect your investment and have a healthier club to sell!!

Espo: the injury situation is an on-going mystery over here. Nobody seems to be able to get to the bottom of why we constantly have so many players out. It's not a new thing either, we had the same problem three managers ago and it's never got any better. We keep being told that our medical staff are fantastic, respected and beyond reproach and yet once again we find half the squad out injured. Bad luck? Maybe.

I HONESTLY BELIEVE SOME OF THE PLAYERS ARE USING INJURIES AS AN EXCUSE FOR JUST NOT WANTING TO PLAY FOOTBALL, THERE JUST HAPPY TO PICK UP THERE WAGE, COUPLED IN THEY SIMPLY DON'T WANT TO PLAY FOR THE MANAGER, LET'S SEE HOW LONG OWEN LASTS AFTER THE TRANSFER WINDOW CLOSES, SOUNESS, ALLARDYCE, ROEDER, THESE MANAGERS SIMPLY COULD NOT GET THE PLAYERS ONTO THE FIELD, I SAID BEFORE UNDER KK AND UNDER SIR BOB PLAYERS WANTED TO PLAY WEEK IN WEEK OUT, WITH MAYBE THE EXCEPTION OF DYER AND CORT, ALWAYS INJURED THRU OUT THERE CAREER ANYWAY,AND UNDER KK AND SIR BOB WE PLAYED ENTERTAINING FOOTBALL, WERE PLAYERS ENJOYED PLAYING, UNDER THE OTHER THREE THE BRAND OF FOOTBALL PLAYED WAS SO POOR.
I HONESTLY BELIEVE SO JUST USED INJURY AS THE EASY OPTION NOT TO BE INVOLVED,SOME OF THE PLAYERS PLAYERS WANTED NO PART OF IT.
LIKEWISE WITH KINNEAR.
SOUNESS, ROEDER, ALLERDYCE, KINNEAR HAVE ALL TRIED PASSING THE BUCK ABOUT IT BEEN THE OTHER PREVIOUS MANAGERS FAULT THEY WERE LEFT WITH.
KK AND SIR BOB ARE CLASS ACTS, PROPER MEN, THEY KNEW WHAT THER PUBLIC WANTED AND DELIVERED.
ASHLEY YOU'RE A TOOL YOU MISSED THE POINT BIG TIME.

Goody, goody, revolution back in the air. The only way for peasants to get anything done is to gel together and revolt. The ruling classes laugh at our ignorance and lack of breeding, our willingness to work hard for a pittance, to keep them in clover. But their only fear is and has always been our masses, our superior numbers...' damned awkward having to reload muskets after every kill sir George, what?'
We proved it at the home game with Hull how effective revolution can be when Ashley said he'd leave. What we didn't expect though, cos we're thick peasants, was that he was blatantly lying and playing on previous knowledge of our history over more than a 100 yrs. that we'd get over it and still come back. Yeah but we vowed never to spend our hard-earned cash on his chatty merchandise, beer and pies until he'd actually gone..............wrong. Being thick beer swilling, pie eating Geordies, he knew that with a little placation on his sadness of not being able to sit with us with his bairns for fear of their lives, via his P.R. machine, we'd crumble on that one too. So what are we left with revolting peasants??? DO IT AGAIN! DO IT AGAIN! DO IT AGAIN! DO IT AGAIN!....Get our wind back and stop buying his stock. Can you not just tell your bellies to wait for 2 hours then you'll give them a big treat when they get home? you won't die, honest. It makes me sick to think that no more than 4 or 5 'men' were drinking in Ashley's bars at the Hull game, now they're literally scrapping over someone jumping his turn at the bar at half-time. I VOW HERE AND NOW THAT IF ASHLEY AND HIS CIRCUS ARE STILL HERE BY NEXT SEASON, THEN I WON'T EVER SET FOOT BACK AT ST. JAMES'S PARK AGAIN UNTIL THEY GO.

Andy Gibbins said:

If we have to accept that Ashley is staying for now, this does not alter the fact that drastic changes need to be made. Without doing this, two things may happen

Firstly, we are at very serious risk of relegation. We have a tough run in and frankly, as things stand, I struggle to see where the survival points are coming from.

Secondly, large numbers will not renew seson tickets in the summer, corporate sales will drop, merchandising revenues will drop. This will happen even if we don't get relegated although should that happen, things will be even worse.

So drastic action is required and NOW

I think the following has to happen

i) Wise and Llambias have to be fired immediately. Both have failed in their tasks, both are hated by the majority of the fans, both create a climate in which decent managers won't come to SJP

ii) Kinnear must go now. He's just not good enough and he will cause more harm than good.I wouldn't let him buy in Morrisons, never mind the transfer window.

iii) Appoint a new manager. Shearer or Bruce. Both have profile, both have credibility, both understand the club and the region. Neither would come without some changes of hierarchy and cast iron guarantees

iv) If the above happens, we, the fans, have to forgive the actions of Ashley and 'welcome' him back into the fold. We then get 100% behind the club, the players, the manager and the owner and do our bit in "driving the club forward together"

There is is. I doubt that this will be read by Mr Ashley or any of his advisors but I can't see any other way out of the very deep hole we find ourselves in right now.

Too late now for major surgery to achieve anything this season! Kinnear needs to be given decent funding to bring in HIS players and then we must hope to stay up. I'd take 4th bottom at the end of the season now!

Been watching this lot for 40 years and, sadly, things don't change. Different managers, different owners, different players but same hopes, dreams and broken hearts. Ashley must put up or go: otherwise no one wins, neither owner (relegation would cost him millions), players (most would have to find clubs stupid enough to pay them the wages they currently earn) or supporters (Swansea away!).

Sadly I wont be there next season if we go down cos I just can't keep hoping anymore

Dear LEE,I believe you should take some copies of the transcripts on this BLOG&give them to everyone concerned at SJP.These people including myself are totally misified by the goings on,the lack of respect by some of the management towards us is inexcusable. The players most of whom are Internationals at various levels should be pulling themselves together insted of having long faces because they hav'nt won anything, like some others on this Blog i've been asupporter for 55 years,WHAT DO THEY THINK THAT FEELS LIKE.

All the above and the fact that the whole place is probably cursed from the 95/96 season where there were 22 gunshots and we found we'd shot ourselves in the foot (one of the earliest recordings of doing it)!!! Suddenly it becomes a trend til Sir Bobby shows up. You do have to wonder tho, if Fat Freddy was doing dodgy deals to balance the books... Why was Sir Bobby dumped just after an OK start to a season... The nightmare continues!!!!!

Was a few lower table results n 3 top 5 finishes AND Champions League footy not enough? Souness, Big (FAT) Sam, 5 mins of KK, Roy Kinnear.. sorry Joe Kinnear.. Who'll be the next sub-standard puppet sent onto the frontline?? The nightmare continues!!!!!

To be honest i think this is all a ploy, the way Ashley has made it look like he was trying to sell the club, not turning up to meetings etc made it clear he was just on a jolly, Directors getting out. No Investment, keeping an old Man with no tactical sense or modern knowlege of the game as a yes man, Players wanting to leave, fans not wanting to turn up. All leading down the path of empty stands and a F##kin huge property deal to knock down the stadiam and build houses, offices or a new Shopping mall. This is where Ashley and Wise know each other from property deals with spurs chairman, other wise WTF are they doing. I think there gonna run it into the ground and sell off the assetts. The fat C##t is a pure wan#a. JFK beleives everything he is told. At least in the dark days we were trying to make progress WTF are these idiots doing. WHAT DO YA THINK LEE?

As this seems a very golden oldies blog today I'll have my two penn'th [pre-decimal].
Like Toony, Davey Mac and Chris above I have 50+ years service and I agree with Toony that it's usually a big let down every season, EXCEPT for a short period when a certain KK seemed to insert a bit of magic that made NUFC different in a positive way. Forget about Messiah or bottler, all I know it that it felt exciting and optimistic for a bit, so let's have some more of it before I get too old for excitement!

There is only one answer to this problem 'BANKRUPT ASHLEY'. Dont go to the matches and dont buy the merchandise. If the club gets relegated it can come up again but ashley will not be able to take the loss. The new owner will buy at a large discount so will be able to invest. Hopefully that owner will be a geordie.---- p.s. peter you were real out of order supporting ashley and wise.

Lasted 59 years supporting my team until this clown bought the club. Chucked my season ticket in. One disaster after another and the worst is yet to come. For all you optimists out there who still think we will sign someone within this transfer window, I ask you this. "Which decent player in his right mind would contemplate committing Hari Kari and join Ashley's band of loonies at SJP"? In fact name me any manager who would come to SJP while Ashley is here. Bob Moncur, Neil Farrington and many others fear the worst. Who can blame them?

I think MA has lost so much money he is scared/ doesn't want to invest into a club that he can't come to as he is hated. hes not used to that. hes used to being loved by others simply because he is loaded. people, no doubt inc Dl&DW kiss his BFA just for being rich! this is the same story world over.

I'm all for saying we have no money and doing some hard dealing unlike the last mob. but investment is needed... there is a hole in the roof and the water isn't just leeking in its starting to pour in and ruin the new laminate floor.

JFK like the fans has now seen MA & his followers for who they are. Just as KK did and those managers who have turned him down. Some people aren't effected by people with money and only see the person standing infront of them.

its strange but we could be begging JFK to stay by the end of the season.. thats if he hasn't been banned form everywhere accept kingston park.(?)

Phil Toon Army, you maybe closer to the real plan of ashley than you think. A relative of mine worked for the solicitors that deal with nufc and there was a mention of selling SJP and moving the ground further from town. I don't know how serious the proposal was but the idea was there.

Its prime real estate so even without a full crowd, selling the space it covers would still net ashley millions!
I wouldnt put it past him either the slack t***.

No one will come in now, if they do they are panic buys. Our 'targets' either didnt fancy coming or we didnt offer enough money or probably both. we should have gone after prem experienced players not more unknown foreigners!
Why is ashley issuing a statement after the transfer window and not now. What can he say afterwards that he can't during?

Does anyone know if Ashley would be able to directly pocket the Parachute payments if we are relegated?

Fascinating year so far, with no team obviously relegated yet and 4 points separating 20th and 11th. No wonder no one's for sale, they're all needed at their clubs and with Man City and the blank chequebook, asking prices are double what they'd usually be.

I think I see 16 points for us to take out of the rest of the season. OK, so I'm an optimist... will 39 points see us survive?

Restless Native said:

The big ground sell off conspiracy theory is interesting. But implausible. Surely Newcastle City Council would have something to say about that?

I think the reality is dar simpler. Ashley and his cohorts are a bunch of arrogant, incompetent idiots. End of.

The most disgraceful aspect of the latest episode in the tedious NUFC saga is the general acceptance of the wave of deserting fans. The modern football 'customer' seems fixated with success, glory and silverware, and feels justified in cutting ties with their club on financial grounds alone.
Don't misunderstand me: I stopped going to games regularly a few years ago, due to several factors, including the new breed of spectators invading the ground, the introduction of all-seater stadia, and the nature of the modern game as rebranded by Sky Sports.
Fans burst with pride when they say they are season ticket holders, and that they have been fans since Ardiles was manager. I'm 38, and have been going to matches since Joe Harvey was manager, but I cannot stand the atmosphere in the ground now. Football is essentially a game played by little kids, sometimes accompanied by dads and uncles, all of whom love kicking a ball round a field.
The situation at our club at the minute is dreadful, obviously, but it's nothing new. Lord Westwood looked like a pirate, and by all accounts ran the club like one; Gordon 'I am not a wealthy man' McKeag and his cronies had us in a state; John Hall, the big nosed Mackem tory had the audacity to name a stand in his own honour, then, along with Fatty Shepherd and Hall Jr, sold the club for an astronomical profit to the latest idiot at the helm.
I was born in 1970, the year after we won the Fairs Cup, and I'm beginning to suspect that we'll win a trophy the year after I die! Not to worry, I'll be on the field outthe back having a kickabout with my son.
