Given: Toon Army are amazing but I'm disappointed by Ashley and Co
SHAY GIVEN has lifted the lid on the turmoil which led to him quitting his beloved Newcastle United.
The popular and long serving Irish stopper quit Tyneside just before the January transfer deadline and after originally revealing his heartache over the current situation at St James's Park through his lawyer Michael Kennedy at the start of 2009 the Eire international has finally broke his silence.
In an emotional first interview since leaving United after 11 years at the club, Given broke his silence to reveal how:
*Toon fans deserve much better
*The club is unlikely to challenge for silverware under the current regime
*And the 5-1 defeat against Liverpool was the final straw in his Toon career.
Speaking about his long drawn out transfer which saw Newcastle pocket ã5.9million
Given said: "I felt Newcastle could have dealt with it a little bit better, to be honest.
"I spent nearly 12 years of my life there, and that's a long time.
"I want to thank the fans for the support they've given me over the years.
"They're absolutely phenomenal.
"But this is a new challenge, and a new set of supporters to try and impress."
But in a clear swipe at Mike Ashley, Dennis Wise and Derek Llambias and the rest of the Toon board, Given echoed the concerns and fears of the Toon Army when he said: "I'd been there nearly 12 years, and with the service I'd given the club, I felt the regime could have dealt with it a little better.
"I was disappointed with the way the regime handled it.
"It's a difficult time for Newcastle.
"They're going through a difficult period, and the fans deserve better.
"They're extremely loyal supporters up there."
And despite the club being embroiled in a relegation battle, Given said: "They (the fans) want the club to be firing up the league, and I wish them well."
Given infamously lost the plot for United on December 28 when Joe Kinnear's side were crushed in front of a full house as they went down 5-1 at the hands of the title contenders.
After the game Given stormed off the pitch and shoved goalkeeper coach Paul Barron aside as United plunged to new depths.
He said: "The Liverpool game was a real kick in the teeth.
"It was a low point in my career, and a low point for everyone.
"I wasn't very comfortable with the way the club was - I wanted to be challenging for silverware, but I didn't know if I was going to leave the club.
"I'll be forever grateful for what (the fans) have done for me in my career, but I felt the regime were very unhelpful."

This may go completley against the grain, but maybe just maybe Mike Ashley deserves a little bit more time. Granted he's made mistakes BIG MISTAKES, but he still has the chance to turn this situation round. He MUST GET RID OF DENNIS WISE as his role simply isn't working - he must GET RID OF LIAMBAS - or at least get him to do what Chris Mort did - COMMUNICATE WITH THE FANS. And He Must TELL THE FANS WHAT THE PLANS ARE. That's all we want, to be told what the plans are. As for JFK he's lost the toon army as he's already broken key rules - key rules that made Keegan and Robson loved - BE TRUTHFULL WITH THE FANS - not treat us like we are stupid with lie after lie and spin after spin in his talks with the media.
I tend to agree with anon regarding the basic needs of the fans and to give Mr Ashley a little time to show that he wishes to make amends. I would add that Joe Kinnear also needs to understand that we are not as dumb as a lot of football fans. Don't mistake loyalty with stupidity!
As for Shay given, its sad that he wanted to be away and its sad that he should feel the need to justify his decision but the bottom line is that he was part of a team which underperformed and he was well rewarded for his efforts.
Lets talk about Steve Harper now, an excellent keeper with some stronger attributes than Given. Steve's distribution is better for one and anybody who has played at any level will know, if you recieve a ball early to feet you have a good chance of controlling it compared to the ball that comes from the sky and has to be fought for with the opposition.
Let's be calm and see what the season brings. We can't change what's done and we can't undermine the team on the park. We will stay up and then the real effect of mismanagement will be seen on season ticket sales in the summer.

Isn't a huge NET PROFIT on transfer dealings - when we're staring relegation in the face - enough evidence of his intentions?
Giving someone the benefit of the doubt is one thing. Deluding yourselves in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary is quite another.
The ball's in Ashley's court. It's been there for over a year. Talk is cheap. And so far positive actions are non-existent.
Ashley has to make the first move if he's to be given a chance, the fans of NUFC have been telling him long enough what they want but he has to communicate with us. If he does that then he has a chance if not then he should sell up & get the hell out of Toon. JFK wants to stop all this brothers Grim fairytale stuff we're not daft you know, so shut up & get your team out on the pitch to do your talking by getting points on the board & getting us away from the bottom 3. I don't really care who manages the team or runs the club as long as it's done right & it works. As for Shay I think enough has been said already. It doesn't matter if we like it or not we HAVE to back the team to the hilt between now & the end of May despite how we feel about MA & the dwarf etc so all this talk of a rally or protest before/during the Everton game is a none starter everything in that respect has to go on hold until the summer or the club is safe, we MUST stay in the PL or we could be gone forever.
But thanks to the mistakes of previous managers, Boumsong, Babayaro, Luque, Faye, Owen (All Souness) the club has been left with four players who have taken the squad backwards in giant leaps and cost the club ã45m. Add that to Enrique, Collocini, Geremi, Barton, Duff, Smith, (Allardyce and Roeder) ThatâÂÂs a further ã30m on players that havenâÂÂt lived up to their names/feeâÂÂs, lets not even talk about their wages.
Then we have compensation packages for Souness, Roeder, Allardyce and their teams of backroom layabouts and we start to build up a rather alarming amount of wasted money.
Under Bobby Robson we had little problems like Carr and Butt, Bowyer, Bramble, Ameobi and Dyer, but these werenâÂÂt major problems,- lets not forget, we qualified for the Champions League with a combination of Dabizas, Hughes, OâÂÂBrien, Bramble, Bernard in our back four. Hardly world beaters, but we had one thing in the squad (And manager) that we donâÂÂt have at the minute,- TRUST.
A trust that no matter what, we had goals in the side and a stopper at the back. We had a striker giving his wingers a bollocking, prepared to run through brick walls and play when injured if need be. We had an old warhorse in midfield that was limited but by heck was he effective at times, we had an often erratic and workshy left winger who could cross a ball and fire in a free-kick from nowhere. We had an artistic right winger who could do the same on the right as we were getting on the left. Around that we had pace and a safety in the mind that the rest would always be controlled by what was in front of them.
The squad was already in a state of decline when Sir Bobby left, but it needed minor cosmetic work, rather than all out surgery that Freddy Shepherd and Graeme Souness went on to inflict on it.
The squad Bobby left behind- Given, Hughes, Bernard, Bramble, OâÂÂBrien, Robert, Milner, Butt, Dyer, Shearer and Bellamy. It was depleted because Freddy Shepherd sold Gary Speed behind Bobbys back and Nobby Solano went to Villa for personal reasons, other than that a capable squad needing two or three top draw signings.
It almost brings a tear to the eye when you imagine those games against Inter, Feyernord, Manchester United, Leeds United twice, Arsenal away, Spurs away, we even went to Liverpool and got a draw, drew with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. We always stood a chance in games against anyone especially at home,- fast forward to now and we canâÂÂt be certain of a draw at home to Hull, Stoke, Sunderland and are frequently trounced by 5 or more by the Manchester Uniteds of the league.
The cosmetic work that was required in 2004 was turned into all out surgery by Bobby RobsonâÂÂs successors. Now, itâÂÂs not so much surgery required, the patient is barely on life support and has Harold Shipman breathing down his neck in 2009.

If Shay was 'forced' to hand in a transfer request, it probably meant in business terms that Mike Ashley wanted his loyalty bonus for the move to Man C and wasn't going to grant the transfer to Shay without it. I think Shay would not have been sold perhaps if he didn't go down the 'transfer request' route as then Mike Ashley could also bag Shay's half-a-million give or take. If you think that's rubbish, think about it for a minute. If they really wanted Shay to stay, they would not have accepted his 'transfer request' but look at how speedy things went once he did. Mike didn't want Shay to have it. Course from a NUFC point of view, that's just tough but leaves a bitter taste I'm sure if you have to take it.

HE never had any thoughts of spending any cash, hence why he didn`t insist on Johnson being included in Shay`s deal and the only other bid he put in was for Richardson whom they new Sunderland would never sell? I agree with Ben that Mike Ashley needs to return to his 'normal' business and leave Newcastle asap. It's time for someone to invest in the now and the future. Both Newcastle's owner and manager are 'interim-figures' at this club. Shay was right to go. The REGIME is a shambles and Shay rightly had a go at it. He loved the fans and the club but there's a time for everyone where you've had enough 'empty' promises on challenging for honours and players of calibre coming in. Sad to see Shay go but maybe if this regime got changed, he's happily come back again. Don't count it out.

I'm not sticking up for Ashley by any means and I think he's aware that he's made big mistakes so if he is attempting to repair what's he's done then he should be given the chance.
However, selling a 32 year old for ã6m when you already have a good replacement and decent substitute keepers already in the squad makes perfect business sense. Our club gained ã6m and lost virtually nothing from the deal.
Mr Ashley you are an idiot if you dont anwer the fans questions.
Forget about protests and support what there is or dont go back. Its that simple. I did it when souness was in charge. Just not worth wasting a satuday anymore and its on sky in the warm.
The sad thing is that we had lots of good players we were just seriously short on numbers and a few more signings of the Nolan/Taylor variety in the last few years would have made us serious european contenders but this regime has yet again failed to deliver them. Lee, Make sure when you question the Chairman you ask about Givens comments. Kinnears latest claims about 'pulling out all the stops' dont match with what Givens saying. Lets not forget that Given gave us 11 years of loyal service. Whatever people might say about giving the current regime time they still havent shown anything that suggests they will give us the same kind of loyalty Shay has and thats why Im going to believe his comments over anything the board puts out. Knowing this lot all we ll get is another 'Its a fact...' list!!!

Ashley's adgenda is perfectly clear. His only aim with Newcastle United is to use the club to line his pockets by systematically selling off our best players. He is nothing but an asset stripper. As far as Newcastle supporters are concerned the transfer window was a total disaster, but Ashley sees it very differently. For him it was a major success because he personally came out of it ã8 million better off. I'm sure Ashley is already licking his lips in anticipation of the summer transfer window and thinking of exactly how much he can get for the likes of Martins, Guitierrez and Bassong.
Should we now be bracing ourselves for another "Statement" from Ashley, where he paints himself as hard up and hard done by, with only the welfare of Newcastle United at heart.
He may well then dispense with the valued services of Dennis Wise to buy time and sympathy from the hopeful/gullible (anon? Terrence?).
This man is going to "Gut" our club like he does with every other business he acquires. This will happen whether anyone protests or not. But it might make him squirm a bit.
Dave Robson. Every penny of income generated by the club by whatever means theoretically goes straight into Ashley's wallet as he is the owner. His wallet didn't gain when he bought the club and subsequent debts etc were reduced whatever his motives were. He at least deserves credit for that as the club might not exist if it wasn't for him. If a very rich Arab (or whoever) replaced him it would be no different but the supporters shouldn't protest at every decision they disagree with. Some think he got it wrong because KK left but the resulting protests have contributed greatly to the turmoil the club is in now.
I totally agree with you though that the type of players you mention should have been brought in earlier and even more of them. And if players no longer want to play for the club, get rid of them regardless of who they are.

Can you please refrain from using industrial language. This year I decided to buy my daughter and I a season ticket as the thought of going to the match seemed like fun, and indeed we thoroughly enjoyed the first game. We got some pop corn and cola and took our seats hoping that the prayers we had put in place ( as regular chruch attenders ) would be answered and that the football we had paid to watch would be fun. However I was horified to discover that some mindless idiots use the match to vent their anger and use industrial language very much like yourself. After the first game I bought my daughter some ear muffs hoping that they would block out the industrial language which was being used all around us, however this didn't work. What has happened since has really upset me and my wife. The other night when I served up some soup after midnight mass, my daughter threw it on the floor and said "your nothing but a fat c**t just like Ashley" my wife and I were horrified. So please Jeddi think before you use such industrial language again.

Why does Trence have an issue with anybody being a keeganite , from my recollection he came in when we were on our last legs and along with Sir John Hall , transformed not only the stadium but also the team into everybodys second favourite . I'm sure Terence wasn't around when Gordon Lee, Richard Dinnis and the likes of Bill McGarry were in charge and I for one do not want to go back to that. Under KK everybody wanted to watch us, and who can forget the 5-0 drubbing of the Mancy Scummers. Given called it a Regime where I come from that is something evil a military Junta ( Mugabe) but thats what we have a couldn't care less management that do what they want, and have no idea what they are doing or what they want. As a family we began to reside in Durham three years back and since then I've regularly spoke with my wife as regards how much I enjoy the City's "Industrial Heritage", however there is still no call for the horrendous use of foul and abusive language you keep serving up.
I like nothing more than enjoying some friendly banter with the locals before and after matches in the local public houses( although as a tea totaler mines a coke. )
But surely you can understand my wife and I's grief when our daughter now uses such horrendous language on a daily basis. She's even atarted bringing boys back to the house. Telling me to "f**k off and keep my nose out" is a clear example of how industrial language can have an adverse reaction on people.

I am so sick of being the laughing stock we used to be a club that everybody wanted to be there 2nd team now we have turned to a team that everyone looks at and laughs surely Ashley can see it would make good business sense to try and make it a club everybody loved.

I'm sorry Dave Robson but you appear to only want to give Ashley 100% backing on your terms - if he does exactly as you state re personnel. Many others will want other personnel. Stalemate already. Yes, it's our club but only as far as we are the customers - albeit not in a position to change brands if we don't like the product! Owners of any business have to listen to their customers but the customers cannot run the business. Customers won't all be saying and all wanting the same thing, neither will they all agree with everything the owners do.
From what I've been led to believe so far, the club policy was to invest in youth for the future but two of the three players we've just brought in are experienced pros and the other (and also the two we didn't get) is young but has Premier league experience. May be, just may be, Ashley (and his board) have learnt the hard way and are changing their approach. If the club can't be sold then we have to stick by what we've currently got, call a truce and do everything possible to support the entire club and not just the team.

Having read reports that there is a planned demo , can I say that I think it would be best to wait until our Premiership fate is sealed one way or the other . I hate this shower of S*** but I don't want to give them the opportunity to lay the balme at our feet. I do thin k we should make it clear that Old Cross Eyes is not welcome in the North East so hopefully he stays away. I am a Keeganite and proud of it . At least he has honesty and integrity and walked because he saw what the fat man and Old Cross Eyes were doing to a club he loved . Even at the beginning of the season when we played the Mancy Scummers we were the better team and I was confident that with a little bit of investment we would be challenging top 6 . wei wu wei - surely to protest would be action not no action. the goverment try this logic all the time. its also known as "guards watching the gaurds". or having the toon army argue about things we should just forget.. surely action with out action would be simply to turn up and support the club no matter who is in charge or who is playing in the shirts. yes if they're pants they should do a couple of weeks in the reserves. but if we support the players they will improve on the field and in the long run better player will want to come and play for us..
MA can't strip this club it would be like taking the windows and doors off your house. firstly you have to live in it and secondly you have to sell it. keeping the house in order can only benefit MA and NUFC. If he does it any other way he'll be shooting himself in the foot.
5.9m is not enough for given it was right to hold out for more, if SG wanted and easy walk he could of stayed till the end of the season. far as i'm concerned he plays for ManC now and its a ManC player having a go at us when there is no need for it..

I don't believe we are being laughed at, if people are doing this they're just sheep followig the papers.
Spurs have just spent 45m on buying back players they sold last season if we did that then yes the football world would have every right to laugh at us..

Shay is a percentage player. over the season he'll save lost of shots off the line but I believe he also puts pressure on the defence by not coming off his line. I remember SBR stuck with Harper after SG had been out with an injury he then threatened to leave if Harper wasn't put back on the bench..
I'd love to see Harper play for England and if he can do more to support his back four I think we'll be stronger in general. I mean, it can't be coincidence that no matter what players we've had in defence we've been total rubbish!!?

Shay doesn't need to justify the reasons why he left. All the Newcastle fans know what the 'regime' is doing to the club.
He has the respect of the Toon Army but he should just have left and kept his silence.
All this does is drag our club back into the tabloids and give them further ammunition to slate us.
As for Ashley and his mob; they are so full of bull**** it is unbelieveable. You will never get the truth out of this man. He promised big signings last summer and they didn't materialize. This time all we had was JFK spouting off rubbish about who we were buying and arguing with Insomnia.
The signings that were made were adequate with plenty of premier league experience, plus we got rid of one of the parasites that have dragged our team down over the last few years. Good riddance.
