Joey Barton just had to go

By Lee Ryder on May 5, 09 12:26 PM

So there you go Newcastle United's reward for taking in Joey Barton as one of their own was thrown straight back into our faces with Alan Shearer spot on for calling time on his Toon career.

Barton has played his last game for Newcastle United.

How could Barton stay after this?

Getting sent off and missing the last three games of the season was bad enough but rather than keeping his head down and leaving Anfield with dignity Barton opted to argue the toss with Shearer.

It was surely an argument that could not be won.

The look on Toon players as they filed out of Anfield made it obvious that something had gone off during the post-mortem of the latest capitulation at Liverpool.

Pure disbelief and not because of the result.

Barton claimed that he was the "best player at the club" and he "had to play" at Liverpool after Shearer admitted he'd made a mistake, there won't be many on Tyneside backing the Scouse bad boy.

If Shearer did tell Barton he was "****" then he got it correct.

Somewhere underneath the demons of Joey Barton lies a talented player.

However, unless that is matched with a cooler head and a more mature outlook on football, he won't get anywhere and an effective player is as good as a **** player if he is banned and sitting in the stands.

Yet the question must be, will he ever sort his head out?

On this evidence the answer must be no.

But that looks like it won't be Newcastle United's problem no longer.

Barton has failed to achieve what he set out to do when he told the Chronicle at Billingham on October 21 that night he vowed: "The aim is to turn in performances for the fans. I want to do it for everybody connected with the club.

"Players, fans and staff, everybody I have let down in the past.

"I want to go on to start paying back my transfer fee, which I don't think I did at any stage last year."

Barton could do little about his two injuries this season especially the one inflicted by Lee Cattermole at St James's Park in November.

And his broken foot could only be deemed as another slice of bad luck.

But with the team trailing 2-0 at Anfield, Barton needed only to play out time and then focus on the remaining three fixtures.

Then keep his head down and get on the bus, go home and refocus.

The problem is he has a psychological deficiency which prevents him from saying uncontroversial things when he's angry or that's when he's not trying to knock somebody's head off.

But there you go, Newcastle folk, I'd like to think, take people as they find them.

Barton had a decent reception and people got behind him.

We've all made mistakes in life, some bigger than others.

But Barton has simply thrown it all away in double quick time.

And if he is looking for somebody to blame all he needs to do is look in the mirror and the person responsible for all of this mess will be there to greet him.

In the global picture Newcastle have brought this on themselves by the last 12 years comical management of the club. This idiot should never have been brought to the club. When Utd go down it will be a reality check for fans, "we are one of the top 5 clubs in the world". Don't make me laugh, Utd are in the top 5 jokes in the world

I have followed this team for over 60 years, for the last 33, from over here in Canada. I am the only Geordie in my circle of friend, as you can imagine, I am constantly the focus of all football related jokes about this sad team.
The present team do not deserve to be in the EPL!I am almost ashamed to watch the many live games I get on Setanta. I guess I will not be seeing many next year when they dive into the Championship

shame because he was the best NUFC player for 77minutes.
we finally had some zip/drive/creativity in the midfield and just when you think he could become pivotal to survival he blows his cool.
time to go mate!
There are less talented people then him at the club who deserve there chance because they dont let you down and give 100%.
We now go into the last three games with a midfield as quick as a snail.
Cheers Joey...what a way to justify that transfer fee.
ON ANOTHER NOTE...does anyone else think that Duff is far more potent from left back? he finally semms to want to take players on.

Luke,

On 28 August '08 I aired my views on Barton on your Blog. I wrote:

"I have supported the team since the 70's, for several seasons I never missed a single home game, been to Wembley 5 times with the Toon and been dissillusioned many times but never enough to stop me going to St James Park. What changed? A one word answer - Barton! When Newcastle failed to sack the thug, for his appalling behaviour on Boxing night in Liverpool I was disgusted! He has been given so many prior 'second chances' I could not believe he was not sacked for gross misconduct (he would in any other profession) and to then see him pick up a reported £50K a week! - sorry but that is just wrong!

Put simply I decided I do not want to see a single penny of my hard earned cash ending up in his pocket. When he goes I will be at the next game but until then I will have to make do with watching the Toon on TV.

Barton, is the complete antipathy of a professional. Not only is Barton not punished by the club but he has been positively pampered (with helicopter journeys reportedly laid on to enable him to meat bail condition curfews).

Sadly the failure of NUFC to dump Barton will continue to have major repercussions throughout the club."

And so it has proved to be. For the arrogant toad to now suggest he is the best player we've got shows just how deluded he is. However I am not sure who is the most deluded Barton for his opinion of himself or Fat Sam who thought he would be an asset to Newcastle! Thank God Shearer is taking steps to bring some morality back to the Toon. Good riddance Barton and I for one hope you never play football again!

According to newspaper reports today, some players are unhappy because they have to turn up for training / meals / pre-match walks etc. at the correct time. Further evidence of how rotten everything is at the club. If we avoid the drop, is anyone confident that we won't be in exactly the same position this time next year?

pedi said:

I wish shearer would've stuck one on him!

I'd sell him for an embarrassing amount of money, roughly 11p. The cheapest player ever in the premier league (not including free's) then he could have a title all to himself!
He shouldn't have been bought in the first place - but he came, should've been kicked out when he went to jail - but he stayed, surely now he can't have another chance? I wouldn't put anything past this board mind!

This latest outburst may put buyers off, he needs to be got rid of and quick.

Barton must go , he should of gone the moment he landed himself a prison sentance.
I firmly believe Alan Shearer will remain as manager & i fully back his stance over Barton, however if Shearer decided not to stay on as manager, whoever comes in MUST follow Alans stance & get Barton out of the club.
I ask would Fergie accept this sort of behaviour from the likes of ROONEY or RONALDO,not a chance, no matter who they are Fergie would have them straight out of the door & until we remove this idiot from nufc, i believe we will go in one direction only.

Paul T said:

The guy is an idiot simple as that. The arrogance of the man is unbelievable - 'best player at the club' - don't make me laugh! He is a liability, always either injured, suspended or at her majesty's pleasure. It is disgusting that he has played only a handful of games this season and still gets paid over 50k per week of the club's money. Hope that it the last we see of him in black and white.

TERRY said:

Hi Lee
I will be pleased when this season is over, going down or staying up, I don,t care anymore,
just want it over Fed up with all this Crap?
Crap players Crap Chairman we need a fresh start?

PNY said:

I would rip up his contract now regardless of what it'll cost. He's just done too much damage to the club since he joined - he makes Bellamy look sane! The fact is he's spent two years injured, suspended and IN JAIL! Good riddance Joey don't let the door hit you on your a*se on the way out.

Smithy said:

I keep hearing 'its a pity he is a good player'...my god how we have fallen he is a poor mans clarence acuna ..two goals in 2 seasons ...I have yet to see a good performance and he is injury prone and a complete nut job....

Newckie said:

Barton has really done a very very stupid thing which is the culmination of a career going ballistically off the rails.

Arguing with Shearer alone let alone in front of his fellow players has left Newcastle No Choice.

The comparison to Bellamy is interesting one and does put it in some perspective in terms of how far you cross the line.
I guess roughly Bells was just an idiot whereas Barton is a thug.

The part that absolutely has me incensed is he IS a midfielder we desperately needed to help us not urinate on us.

In taking on Shearer he has hit a wall and a hard one at that because it is made of black and white bricks!

Joey Barton = Idiot
No getting away from it. I feel sorry for the medical staff who worked around the clock to get him back on the pitch. This boy should be slung out of the club. I hope he's played his last game. Its just a shame that recent years have seen our club poluted with scum like this guy - Dyer, Woodgate, Bowyer, Bramble, Bellamy anybody....

Incidently a very interesting article by Sir Bobby in the Mail On Sunday. He publically blames Keegn, Wise, Jimanez and Kinnear for the current plight - not Ashley. He says Ashley's only guilt is backing the wrong people. He praises Ashley up for not interfearing with team affairs - however Bobby does state that he asked Mike Ashely what scouting had been done before we bought the well past it un mobile Kevin Nolan - the reply from our owner - a simple shrug of the shoulders. Sir Bob advised him to think more wisely before spending another £4.5m on crap.

Heres hoping for a miracle - Fulham did it last year, West Ham the year before West Brom the year before that - c'mon Toon don't give up just yet.

GeordieGerman said:

I can just see Barton at home now. Sitting in a chair, newspapers skewen all over the place. Desperately looking for one article that says something nice about him.

No chance Barton… ! If anyone out there lives in the same area as Barton. I’d advise you to stay out of the pubs today.

Lee, what happens if Barton refuses to leave, and instead, insists on remaining to see out the rest of his three year contract at £64000 a week for doing nothing. The way these guys are pampered, I'll bet we cannot sack him.

TERRY said:

I would like Viduka to stay if we go down ,
But renegotiate his contract, I think he would be great in the lower league he will score a lot of goals against lower league players,
I know a lot of Newcastle fans will not agree but we need to start looking at bringing this club back into the premiership after we go down?

Because if Hull beat stoke on Saturday we are down

ref Joey Barton. When is a clown actually NOT a clown? I am inclined to agree with Brian from Durham when he suggests that Newcastle may NOT be able to sack him and that they will have to carry on honouring his contract. I am under no illusion that Barton will not only have all the answers against being sacked, but will also have access to some "shyster brief" who will be more than "willing" to fight his corner. Hopefully NUFC WILL be able to get rid of him once and for all, something they should have done a long time ago!

TERRY said:

You could look at it in another way, Keep him at Newcastle and refuse to let him go and force him to play in the Championship next season , that will hurt him even more

GeordieGerman said:

I'd put him up for transfer for 1p. That would look good on his C.V.

JOEY BARTON IS A LEGEND

brian from durham said:

Norman thanks for comments. Perhaps the only way open to Barton is to try a move abroad. Maybe you could fix him up with a club to join you in Spain,as I do not think he has any future left over here.

ref Barton. In answer to Brian from Durham: Barton's move to Spain would be a no-go--he would not last five minutes, plus I do not think he would get on the bench for my local club, Benidorm. The guy is just no good. If big fat Sam thinks he is, then hopefully he will come back to St. James's Park and buy him. He is welcome to him. Best wishes.

bob harvey said:

OK, so Barton is well out of order, but you can't just sack a player for getting sent off and then arguing with the manager.
Barton should be playing 40 games for Newcastle next season whatever leauge it's in, especially if some clown doesn't cripple him again.

TERRY said:

I agree you like him or not ,
If we go down we need these player to bring us back up, but that will not happen,
He is off, so will Shearer at the end off the season if we go down, and so will all the first team players?

WHAT A MESS

Mark said:

And to think the club wanting to sell Barton last Summer because they knew what trouble he was played a large part in Keegan walking out on us.

I think Joey deserves another chance. He is only human and he has feelings too. I expect he regrets what he has done and is sitting at home reading this being very sad. Chin up Joey, don't let them get you down. You'll be back for teh black and white soon. And if they sack you I do hope you take up your case with the employment tribunals. There are too many unscrupulous employers getting away with murder these days and you sshould make a stand if, god forbid, they terminate your contract

Chipper said:

Well, I was an advocate but he has driven the final nail. Move on Joey - attitude, club, life. Thank goodness for an assister of Viduka's class being available. Owen, Duff, Jonas, Oba, Smudge - all together now!

Here we go again, only one thing matters and that is victory over the smogs and we are debating trivia about a nobody.I watched MOTD last night and saw 15 inferior teams avoid relegation, lets all raise the roof tommorrow and argue after
