And so the tearful images of Sir Bobby taking his hat off to the thousands of football fans and players alike will be the last we'll ever see of one of the greatest ever icons of the game he made so beautiful.
A man who saved Newcastle United from plunging into the abyss, a man who transformed Ipswich Town from a small team to European kings, a man who rubber stamped his own Geordie charm on continental giants like Barcelona, Porto and PSV - and most notably a man who reunited the nation during Italia 90 with England.
Already tributes have been flooding in for Sir Bobby and it was hard not prevent tears rolling down the face on Sunday night as he was wheeled into St James's Park for one final time.
