New Toon banana kit enjoys a winning debut
At around 7pm tonight there was an almighty hush as the controversial new away kit that belongs to Newcastle United dazzled a crowd of around 400 people who turned out to watch the future Magpies take on Ashington at Woodhorn Lane.
One player admitted: "There was just a big hush but we soon got used to it and there was no excuse for not picking out our team-mates!"
In a typical gonnabes v wannabes clash with young professionals taking on Northern League opposition, unsurprisingly there were a few tackles close to the bone.
But it was United who went in front after just two minutes as Callum Morris pumped a long ball into the Ashington half and after Fabio Zamblera flicked the ball into the path of Wesley Ngo Baheng, he steered the ball home.
Ashington equalised after Fraser Forster dropped a cross from the right and Keith Douglas bagged on 26 minutes but Zamblera restored the lead two minutes before the break when he converted from Baheng's cross.
Former United trainee Liam Atkin smashed home after the break with 55 minutes played when Samuel Ameobi's header away landed straight at his feet.
But the yellow and orange clad Ameobi won it for the Magpies with 21 minutes to go following a thunderous shot after Samuel Adjei's good old fashioned trickery down the right hand side had Ashington rocking.
All in all a good run out for Alan Thompson's youngsters but the banana away kit was off to a winning start!
UNITED: Forster (Soderberg 46), J.Taylor (Tavernier 63), Lough, McLaughlin (Inman 63), Tozer, Morris, Godsmark (Airey 46 [Adjei 53]), Donaldson, Zamblera (Samuel Ameobi 46), Baheng, Danquah.

lee who scored the second goal for us???
Lee, it just proves how desperate our current plight is when the best thing you have to write about is the new stripe being worn yb the youngsters. Thats not blog thats just a sign of how far we have fallen under the MA regime.
Ryder's reply: I take your point Mark.
We have not ignored the sale of the club today but this blog has always covered the reserves and younger players coming through and we will continue to do so during these dark times.
Ignoring the future players of the club is not an option, despite the turmoil.
Hi Lee. Always good to hear about the young guns.
I thought Zamblera had departed back to Italy?r6qk45
Hi Lee what a mess ey? Out of the limited info you are getting from that disgrace we have as a board, how in your honest opinion do you see things going over the coming weeks,no that`s a hard question, just looking for your own opinion. Cheers
At least every time I look at the table we're still in 12th spot. Considering the way things are going round here, I'll take it!
Tardonicus--- now that you've pointed that out, if MA's as bad everyone says he is his next move will be to change the club name to UFC-NEWCASTLE. That will put you in a relegation position at a stroke

Perhaps 2009 July 15 was the day NUFC began to start being professional again.
BEGAN!? PERHAPS!? PROFESSIONAL!?
And in Ashington too - how fitting.
Happy memories but still ONLY MEMORIES.
Best.
So kinnear thinks we would not have got relegated with him in charge, and that the fans are deluded to think that Shearer could do better than him as a rookie manager? Sorry Joe i don't see it that way, in fact i think his appointment was one of the most critical errors of the ashley regime;
We all laughed off his dodgy press conference at the start but it did his credibility no good.
At a time when we were reeling from the loss of Keegan the appointment of an out of work manager with a modest record and a history of poor health did little to appease disgruntled fans and players.
He ridiculously criticised Keegan for his lack of signings prompting many to come to the conclusion that he was just a mouthpiece for ashley and co.
And he alienated nzogbia, who for all his faults was still our best attacking midfielder after milner left.
Kinnear has had his fair crack at management and his record is modest so who is to say a rookie with former ties would not have done better? Look at klinsmann and keegan to name but a few who didn't do too bad did they?
Shearer for manager.
Sorry to be a pain, But if this drags on any longer and his business keeps losing money,
I hope it does not get to the stage in a few months, because he cannot sell he decides to call in the receivers at Newcastle, You never Know with this IDIOT.
The sale of this club is taking far to long for me, Very worried something going on behind the scenes they are telling use??
Kieran: I totally agree ith your comments on JK but at the same time I feel Shearer is not the man for the job at this present time. I have high hopes that he will be a top NUFC manager in the furture but at the moment I feel we need a tried tested and proven manager. If we were secured in mid table of the premiership then okay take a gamble but not when we have so much a stake this season. I think he showed his lack of managerial skills by bringing on MO in the last game of the season. Everyone could see he wasn't interested. If we went down MO then had an excuse not to sign. Right now we need a manager who knows what he is doing 'right now' not learning and has the experience to turn to any player and say 'play or go see the reserves till you learn to play'. We had young players last season that were never used who had been playing well in the reserves but never got the chance because they all stood by our over paid flops.
Oh My God. We have HAD tried and tested managers with proven records - in fact we have had little other than tried and tested managers, Souness, Gullit, Dalglish, Allardyce - when are people going to stop banging on about a tried and tested manager and what we need. Stability is what we need, someone given the job and told 'you WILL have this job in four years, I pronise you so get settled and regardless we will back you.
Those 'fans' who ridiculed Robson just before he was sacked shoudl look around at the mess we are in and hang their heads in shame. Believe me that's when things went wrong - had we kept Robson for another three years and inegrated Shearer in as he neared the end of his playing career we would have a passioante and respected young manager who has learnt from one of the bext managers of all time.
Ashington were robbed...! ;)
Richard: Top post and agree with you 100%
But one question - what if the unthinkable happened and we went down again with Shearer - and had a dodgy start to the next campaign, what then? How many people are willing to say right now, uncompromisingly, that we will stick by one man through thick and thin for the duration?
I would, if I thought the right ingredients were there, but then that's just me. I worry sometimes about the patience and immediacy of some of my fellow fans.
well said Richard, all the best teams have continuity. Liverpool set the standard for years by bringing through tried and tested man managers who had the club at heart. We have had a succession of chancers (with the exception of Robson)who all re-iterated the mantra that we are 'a big club who should be challenging for honours at the very top'. Fact is we are a well supported club with a big ground. A really big club has a big trophy cabinet, our trophies could fit in a bathroom cabinet. Until we give our manager whoever he may be, (I remain unconvinced that Alan Shearer is the man for the job at this point in time)plenty of time, as Manure did with Ferguson, we will continue with a dis-jointed and a merry-go-round transfer policy with players coming in on massive salaries and no get- out clause (how stupid was that?)Prepare for at least three years in the Championship.
