Tim Krul is simply a Dutch of class

By Lee Ryder on Aug 9, 09 07:04 PM

Tim Krul quite rightly took the plaudits he richly deserved at West Brom but in putting in a performance that Lev Yashin would be proud of - he has now handed caretaker boss Chris Hughton an almighty headache just 93 minutes into Newcastle's Championship season.

Krul's superb performance could easily have been overshadowed by the last minute "goal" that wasn't meant to be from Jonas Olsson yet that would have been harsh on the young Dutchman who seems to take it all in his stride.

Krul simply picked up where he left off in Palermo three years ago when he made his debut as a raw teenager in the UEFA Cup on a night when he kept the Serie A side on a mild night in Sicily.

That night United triumphed 1-0 and Krul was unbeatable but Saturday's tip top teatime performance left Toon fans gasping as he pulled off four first class saves following an injury to Steve Harper in the first half.

Hughton is now left with a big decision for the Reading game if Harper is fit to take on the Royals.

Anyone who knows Krul is aware at just how cool a character the 21-year-old Dutch ace is.

Having watched Krul in the reserves and the Toon youth team since he arrived as a youngster from ADO Den Haag, his performances often display an approach to the game that seems to display ultra high confidence bordering arrogance.

But isn't that so typical of the super cool Dutch?

If there is such a version of good arrogance, then Krul certainly seems to sum it up perfectly.

My memory takes me back to 2005/06 season.

Glenn Roeder is Newcastle's Academy director just months away from being appointed as first team boss.

After a 0-0 draw against Stoke City in the third round of the FA Youth Cup on a freezing winter night at Kingston Park, Krul has just kept his side in the game with a series of fine stops.

In the centre circle Roeder is looking round the group of fresh faces for a volunteer to take penalty number five as he prepares to hand in his piece of paper to the ref.

With no takers, Roeder initially failed to observe the raised hand of the tall Dutchman.

And after Stoke misfired during the shoot-out it meant that Krul could win the tie for the Magpies.

His kick was blasted beyond the keeper and Newcastle progressed into the next stage under Roeder.

That night in the drafty locker rooms of Kingston Park, Roeder and I sat and discussed just how good Krul could be with the right guidance.

Fast forward the clock 12 months to Palermo, it is the morning of the UEFA Cup against the Serie A side and both Shay Given and Steve Harper have just been told they aren't fit enough to play.

Roeder informs the media that Krul will instead be between the posts to gasps of astonishment from journalists that have made the flight out to the sun kissed island.

However, Roeder is cool and so was Krul as he later kept out the Italians in a debut that even he couldn't believe.

Of course the fullness of time will see Krul - who wanted to be the next Edwin van der Sar as a kid - fish the ball out of his net one day.

But for now, Newcastle fans are toasting a new hero in the shape of the ice cool Dutchman from The Hague.

At last United have a keeper who can deal with crosses. Let's hope he isn't sold before we can reap the benefits.

I hate to say it but clubs will be sniffing around Krul after he played so well on saturday. And with that fat cockney market trader as owner with his "every player has his price" attitude I can see him being sold before the window closes. It was great to see him deal with the crosses so confindently not like his vampire team mate Harper who has a fear of them and flapped when the cross come in for the first goal.

o the irony!
Poor harper waits 10years to be number one and then krul does that.
Im sorry but there is no justification for dropping him, imagine what it could do to his confidence.
He has to play against Reading, he has earned the right to.
He is already better than Harper

why did Chris Hughton hand back the initiative to WBA . We were clearly on top in the second half particularly , why take our best target man off and go 4-5-1. Should have taken Shola off and brought on Nile Ranger. Joans seemed to tire with 20 to go . Why not put Duff to the left and give Lua Lua his chance on the right . His pace would have created chaos . Why does Hughton insist on playing Duff and Jonas on the wrong wings . Jonas right foot should be right wing and Duff conversely . Anybody with any football nous knows that crosses coming in from a wrong footed player are easier to defend than those coming across the box from the bye line area. Will somebody tell him to stop persisting with something that clearly doesn't work . Team for Sat Krul , both Taylors , Kadar and Enrique Jonas, Smith barton and Duff with Carroll and Ranger up top . Lua Lua on the bench with whoever we have left . Sorry Harps , but Tim Krul's performance warrants staying in his place . Coloccini was an absolute liability it was like being on a roller coaster ride waiting for the next stomach churning incident to happen . There's enough ability in that team to cause problems in this league . I had to endure watching Reading on Saturday as my daughter was a mascot (Don't ask it would take too long to explain ) but in all honesty they play neat passing football but with no end product . We can win on Saturday and this would give us a decent start even in difficult circumstances , just wish Mike A***hole would sell up and leave our club alone .

Got to admit that it looks increasingly like the Market Trader is using every game as a shop window to display talent for sale, and intends going nowhere until he's got his pound and a half of flesh. Wouldn't be too surprised to see a couple of the good up and coming prospects snapped up by other clubs as a result of good displays. Perhaps to assist the carving-up of this club the bar codes on the home shirts could be altered indicate a rough selling price when scanned.

DavidK I have similar concerns , I think Mike A***hole perhaps has now seen that there is some good young talent in the club , decided to stay for another year and asset strip , selling the likes of Krul , Ranger , Lua Lua , Vuckic, Kadar to name but a few and reel in more money . Make no bones about it he has no interest in the long term planning of NUFC and will take out of it what he can. You know when a clunb like Chelsea are linked to Krul as apparently they were last season , he must be top notch. What worries me is if this carries on we could end up doing a Weymouth and have to play a full team 17/18 year olds .

Krul was fantastic!
He's been dubbed the next Edwin vd Sar, and it's clear to see why.

I love Steve Harper, but as fas as I'm concerned, the No.1 of Newcastle United is Tim Krul!!!

Here's hoping that all the players find inspiration in this lad!

Scotty, David K,and djc have got it right. That's why I hope Krul, Kadar, Ranger, Lua Lua, and the other talented youngsters make only limited appearences while this backstabber ( Keegan, Shearer ) is in charge because as aforementioned he'll offload them to line his pockets. But with a woefully thin squad I suspect they'll get more than enough games to attract interest.

Who was in goal when we got beat a couple of weeks ago 6-1? Harper is a good keeper Krul is coming on but needs to come in slowly. he'll get his chance. Its not Harpers fault hes been playing behind the 4 misfits and i include both Taylors. Put that together with the way CH asks them to play -the keeper is like a sitting duck! no wonder Shay did a runner! As for Amnoideawhereiamonthepitch'Obi, it wasn't a surprize to see him kick his team mate in the head! that man is clueless! and i wish someone would tell him to stay out of the box when we are defending set pieces, what a liability!! no awareness what-so-ever!

I have just read this mornings Mirror. Firstly it reiterates the possibility of O'Dreary taking over as Manager. There is now no doubt in my mind that Mike A***hole is hellbent in destroying the Toon and taking the p*** out of it's supporters . It gets worse, he is thinking of going to watch the game on Saturday ( Now that really is taking the p***) and finally it mentions that Arsenal are sniffing around Krul , and who can blame them . Toon army are going to have to let Mr A***hole know we despise him with every living breath . 90 Minutes letting him know he's not wanted might just be the final thing to make him go away and leave us alone . I'm sure I speak for the majority who just want him to go and let us get on with supporting our club , through what is likely to be a long rebuilding process . I'm sorry to say but if he was lying on the floor in front of me choking I would watch as he took his last breath . That's bad I know but that's what he's done to this club and it's true family.

I think it is a bit harsh djc??. I will admit I have hated the fat cockney market trader ever since he stabbed Keegan and our loyal fans in the back last year. Lets just hope that the Mirror have got it wrong about O'Leary and the possible intrest from Arsenal in Krul cos I'm sure the majority of our furious/fed up fans would be more than happy to watch him take his last breath on the floor.

Lee said:

The reports about O'Leary are gathering momentum, so there's probably some truth in that. Not sure about Krul going to Arsenal - Fabianski is already there. Plus Krul has hardly played any games - some people are banging on as if he's a world-beater, such is their desperation to say something positive about the toon!

It's now looking like we're going to be stuck with Ashley, who will have to decide if he's prepared to gamble and invest heavily in order to get us in the top six and look like a good investment to a buyer. So Laura, stick or twist?

Lee-- Just read a good article by Simon Bird in the Daily Mirror this morning regarding time for Ashley to sell up . I think it may be worth looking at and perhaps taking up the lead from a North East point of view . I think if both national and local press start a campaign to force this imbecile to sell up then eventually the pressure will get to him . In one of the comments added by a reader it mentions something about breaking news involving Ashley and the Office of Fair Traiding. Do you know anything about that . My only advice --- Be brave and stand up strongly for what you believe to be right for the toon . At the minute Lee , the Cockney spivs are not communicating with either us or to some extent yourselves . So what if Llambias doesn't grant you an interview. Who is he to "Grant" anybody anything , I don't see HRH before or after his name . He's nothing more than a cockney barrowboy who got lucky. If being brave means not being allowed to interview any of the NUFC hierarchy , I'm sure that you would have the support of almost all Toon supporters in saying that is a price worth paying . Especially if it rids us of this destructive group.

Can't belive the ashley scenario, well I can actually it was so highly predicable. He has used this failed sale attempt to de-rail shearer coming in and putting things back on track. Shearer must have made it clear (I guess) that he would be in charge of transfers, football matters and required X million quid to get the toon promoted. Ashley must have thought this was un-acceptable, he has created a smoke screen and now we are left with oleary, hughton or kinear.... great.

Its also created an awful paradox do we keep going to games and hand over our money to keep ashley in power or do we let him drive us from St James on a saturday afternoon .... I'm gutted .... dont know what to do for the best, not sure there is much I can do as the 'average' fan, go to home games, away games or stay out? Gutted.

Ashley actually had a chance with shearer at the end of last season, he could have backed him to the hilt and hoped people would have slowly come round but he has even burned that bridge.... crazy makes no sense. Gutted.

Lee said:

djc - The Office of Fair Trading issue came out early last week, and it's all to do with Sports Direct. Ashley was asked to sell at least six outlets last year, as he was in breach of the Competitions regulations, but apparently he hasn't done a single thing about it, so now they're going to press the matter.

I hope reports of O'Leary becoming the new manager are false. After getting rid of Allerdyce, this would be the third manager he's appointed, all of whom have been out of the game for years. They're probably so desperate to get another manager's job, he can get them on the cheap - with the possible exception of Keegan.

But I might be doing Fat Baldrick Ashley an injustice, he may be working to a Cunning Plan that we don't yet know about !

If so, I hope it includes selling Amoeba Ameobi. For years I've thought he was never good enough to be a Premiership striker and after his display on Saturday, he's not even up to Championship standards. His technique is non-existent.

Mind you, he can kick a stationary head like nobody's business. Perhaps that's the solution. When he next comes to shoot for goal he should think of the ball as being Harper's head, then just watch it fly into the back of the net ! (the ball, not Harper's head...)
