Gooch ghost is bound to hurt us

By Lee Ryder on Jun 10, 10 08:41 AM

When it comes to former players or Geordies coming back to haunt Newcastle United the list is endless.

Now after taking part in the club version season after season, how about trying the international version?

Step forward Oguchi Onyewu and the United States...

Whether you'll be painting your face and getting all patriotic or just taking a passing interest on Saturday is irrelevant, the possibilities of Gooch coming back to haunt us are endless.

It was Glenn Roeder who brought in Gooch on loan three years ago and had the option to sign him at a knockdown price from Standard Liege - talk about land of the free!

But just 11 games in, Gooch only impressed in flashes and despite wanting to stay he was sent back to Belgium as Roeder walked the plank at Newcastle after a 12th place finish in the Premier League.

Injuries may have hampered his career at AC Milan so far but the Italian giants were game when it come to giving him a chance in one of Europe's top leagues.

James Milner, Abdoulaye Faye, Scott Parker, Damien Duff, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Seppe Rossi - all players who've shone away from St James' Park.

Will Gooch go on and join the long list of players who seem to find their form after life on Tyneside?
