Hatem Ben Arfa - you will be missed

By Lee Ryder on Oct 4, 10 12:50 PM

Just when you think Newcastle United have a world class player on their hands who can turn a game like the flick of a switch - Hatem Ben Arfa's presence in a black and white shirt is snatched away from us with a needless tackle.

We all like players to get stuck in and be committed, but regardless of a few people who seem happy to play down what could be deemed ABH on HBA, the tackle from De Jong resulted in the player being branded ÂŜa criminal' by Dutch journalist Hugo Borst.

Indeed, if somebody done that to you in the street, you'd have to wonder what would happen.

Players should not be judged on previous in games but De Jong's record is hardly good, the World Cup final resulted in a chest high tackle on Xabi Alonso for which he only received a yellow card from Howard Webb (and Webb wonders why he was booed).

But the HBA tackle didn't even merit a free-kick in the eyes of Martin Atkinson!

Hearing the crack of Ben Arfa's leg break on Match of the Day 2 haunted me last night.

But you can only wish him a speedy recovery now.

He'll get the best treatment and can perhaps take inspiration from Alan Smith, who in his Manchester United days was badly hurt at Anfield in 2006, while Aaron Ramsey, Antonio Valencia and former Arsenal star Eduardo have all suffered the same fate.

Hopefully Hatem will be back in action in a Toon shirt by March.

Until then it's a long road back.

LEAVE YOUR GET WELL MESSAGES HERE FOR HATEM AND WE'LL PASS THEM ON

Already an adopted Geordie and cult legend in the black & white, such a shame to see him injured.
Even had the decency to wave at us travelling fans as he left the pitch, quite a feat as he was clearly in some considerable pain.
Get well soon Ben Arfa lad, we're gonna miss your brilliance and game changing ability. I hope you have a speedy recovery and that we get you on a permanent deal as soon as you're back and fully recovered!

Lee George said:

When ben arfa was stretchered i couldn't help but feel that his wave was a goodbye a tear came to my eye realising this could be last we see of him hopefully he'll be back playing when he's fit and signs for the TOON!

Iain Russell said:

Horror tackle and (at risk of sounding like Wenger) something needs to be done to give players more protection.
Wish Hatem a speedy recovery, and hopefully he's seen enough here in his short time to stick around another couple of years!! :)

Ashley Medcalf said:

It absolutely saddened me yesterday to see Hatem in that amount of pain and to see a player that the Toon Army already love, have to be stretchered off the pitch.
You could clearly hear the snap on the TV as well.
Hatem is a player that I couldn’t wait to see play a full season in Black + White, he is clearly a player that needs support of the fans and manager and will excel, something he wasn’t given the chance to do at Marseille.
Now with us, some dirty, disgusting player does this and now he might not get the chance to do it here, but I hope he does!
But I think I speak on behalf of most Newcastle fans when I say

I hope you make a very speedy recovery and hope you come back the same player we all know you are.
I also hope you get a permanent deal with us, and stay for many years to come.

You are loved on Tyneside Hatem.

The Man With the Moderately Attractive Face said:

I think he needs to sit down with Smith and have a chat. He's been through all this, the pain of missing so much football and having to change his game.

I do hope he comes back from this okay, he's clearly someone who enjoys his football and it would be a shame for that to be taken away from his due to one man's flash of stupidity.

Best of luck on your recovery Hatem, take it easy and keep your chin up. Hopefully we'll see you back in black and white sometime.

Best wishes to Hatem, and here’s hoping that he gets back soon, wishing him a speedy recovery from all the way down in Dorset.

Agent Bruce said:

A great player with silky smooth skills. He didn't deserve to have that kind of career ending tackle made on him by DeJong.

What's the point in having refs if they allow that kind of thing without taking any action?

I hope he'll make a full and speedy recovery and we'll see him playing in a B&W shirt again.

Fingers crossed.

Best of luck Hatem.

Get well soon.

Wishing him all the best. I hope he knows the whole of the Toon army is praying for his quick recovery. If anything good can possible come out of this terrible situation, hopefully the rest of the team will rally around him and produce a strengthened resolve and spirit in the dressing room. Surely it is time to put and to all the 'tough-tackling midfield enforcer' hype that mars the British game. Apart from 'absolutely', 'tough' is the most over-used word of the 21st century.
Have a good luck at the full video, from the time of the tackle to Ben Arfa disappearing down the tunnel, and then decide who is the 'toughest', Ben Arfa or De Jong?
Bon chance pour un plein retablissement a Hatem.

In the your first few games for Newcastle, I think all Toon fans would agree you have been simply outstanding for us. Your willingness to take players on and your instinct for goal has boosted us and you will be sadly missed throughout your injury. At times in the future it will be a struggle, any recovery from a serious injury is, but it is imperative that you keep your chin up and battle on so you come back an even better player than you are now.

Good luck and howay the lads

Pleased your operation went well Hatem. It's not only the geordie nation that has spoken out about that dirty dutch thug even his fellow country men have turned on him and have dropped him from the national squad. It's not the best punishment for that thug but at least you have had a bit of justice. I hope you make a full recovery and you stay on Tyneside for many more years. Get well soon mate

Lee said:

Hatem, get well soon mate.

You might have been here for a short time but your dedication to play for us and the time spend on the pitch, plus your goal against everton, has already made you a favourite.

We will still be here for you to get back! The whole of Newcastle cant wait to see you back in the black and white!

Dear Hatem,

Distraught about the injury. The bravery and decency you displayed in applauding the fans coming off the pitch was a touching gesture unlike the disgrace of a human being who was the perpetrator.

Chin up, get back to us soon and take the PL by storm like we know you're going to! And we will hope that there will be many more seasons of you at St James Park. You'll always be at home in Newcastle!

Bonne chance!

Hatem,
In the short space of time you have been here you have shown us nothing but dedication, skill and professionalism. We now want to pay you back by sticking with you through this nasty and shocking injury.
De Jong is an absolute thug and i'm sure the tackle was with intent as he knew your talent was much greater than his.
We all love you here at Newcastle Hatem, and we hope these messages of support show this.
You have the whole of Newcastle United including all the fans from around the world behind you. So when your feeling low because of the injury, just remember, that when you come back, you will get the greatest reception from the fans inside that stadium.
Get well soon Hatem.

Great to see the Dutch Natioanl Manager take action, he is obviously known for this sort of thing, so why do the FA not know this?? The Man City manager should do the same and the FA this can not keep going on. This type of tackle where the trailing legs is trapping the players standing leg is becoming more common and needs to be looked at asap! If this was one of ManU's star players there would be an enquirey..!

And as for the ref, I hope we don't see him for a while either De Gonk should have been off, the ref knows it and that why I believe he did even get a card - he totally bottled it!! -"well out of his depth" is an understatment: what a joke!

Mick said:

Hatem,

I'm gutted that you didn't even have a chance to score your first goal at St James' Park before a mercenary thug went out of his way to break your leg. I hope that you're back playing soon and have the home crowd screaming at you to play the type of football that you came here to produce.

Remember when you’re down over this, you’re a bigger man than the scumbag who took you out of the game because he was scared of the damage that your skills could do to his team.

You’ve only played in 3 games so far but the fans have taken to you in a big way. You battled to get a move here and you can battle through this, we’ll give you any backing that we can and believe me, De Jong will not know what’s hit him when he plays up here and has St James Park on his back. The crowd will eat him alive and he’ll never forget what he’s done, nobody goes out of his way to injure one of ours and we’ll not let him forget what he’s done.

I hope that the pain goes soon as I know you’ll have a few sleepless nights. Don’t sit about in a room while you are recuperating. Get out and about and see what the North East has to offer and get back soon, we’re all in this together, even if we are not going through the same pain. You can take it from me that we’re all suffering in some way and we’ll all get through this together and we’ll see you terrorising the opposition before you know it.

Malta Mag said:

You don't realise it son but that wave to the fans as you left the field on the stretcher has put you in a cult hero category with us fans. I truly hope you stay and are not tempted away by the so called big clubs. When the Geordies take you to their hearts you have truly found friends for life.
Get well soon

You may not have been here long, but even in that time, your outstanding performances and moments of brilliance have already made you a firm favourite among the Toon Army. Hopefully you'll be back and playing in black and white again before long - but the most important thing right now is your recovery

Hatem,
It seems to me that some of these brutes are so clever at crocking someone, and making it look like an innocent tackle. It is almost an artform. This Dejong/ Ben Arfa affair has become like the elephant in the room, of course the FA know what really happened....they aren't that stupid..........are they? They'd just rather ignore it and hope it goes away. Until the next time. What would happen do you think if the FA actually had the gonnads to do something about it. Something like, make the offending player and/or his club cough up for the injured players wages and monetary recompense to the victims club. Bet that would clean the game up in a hurry.
Perhaps it's time to consider Professional Referee's, make 'em accountable. Sack them if they don't perform to an acceptable standard.

SC said:

Simply put, players whose actions result in a serious injury to another player should serve a ban of equal length to the time of recovery and rehabilation of the injured player.

So yes, if you recklessly injury a player and he's out for 5 months then so are you. If you mistime a tackle, go over the top of the ball and unfortunately break the guy's leg, then you unfortunately have to be out too.

That team is down a player for a considerable time and so is yours. It would make players at least think twice before taking someone out.

dave said:

why have the chronicle been so quiet on this when we have so many unanswered questions about the FA's handling of this we have video & photographic evidence that a serial thug has got away with these cowardly attack on players, and to add insult to injury the FA are telling complainants that they are powerless to act as fifa don't like it. this is of course blatant lies as they have it covered in their own rules. i brand the FA as liars and cowards, Atkinson a coward & a cheat, & nigel de jong a thug & also a shameless coward too.
