Newcastle United's "friendly" in Holland marred by racist chants

By Lee Ryder on Aug 4, 12 07:01 PM

NEWCASTLE UNITED were held to a 0-0 stalemate in Holland against a determined De Haag side today.

On a frustrating day Shola Ameobi had a perfectly good goal disallowed while Cheick Tiote, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse were subjected to racist abuse from Den Haag fans.

Newcastle officials were tonight assessing the situation and will decide whether to make a formal complaint to the home club.

A club statement said: "In reference to alleged racists chants reported during Newcastle's friendly against Den Haag the club will be raising the matter with officials at Den Haag.

"The matter with officials at Den Haag will be dealt with privately."

United dominated the opening 15 minutes but failed to create a clear cut opportunity in front of goal against a determined Den Haag outfit.

Newcastle's first chance materialised on 18 minutes when Ryan Taylor curled the ball in from the right hand side and Demba Ba headed over the top.

Gabriel Obertan forced the home keeper into his first save of the afternoon when his powerful shot was beaten away on 24 minutes.

Den Haag defended resolutely with the score still deadlocked at 0-0 after 28 minutes.

Den Haag created a chance of their own on 31 minutes when Mike van Duinen dinked a shot wide of returning hero Tim Krul's post.

The lack of cutting edge by both teams resulted in the sides going in level at the break.

The second period resulted in more of the same from United.

Obertan sent another shot high over the bar as Den Haag dug their heels in.

With 62 minutes played Ryan Taylor's corner was headed at goal by Papiss Cisse but the ball was headed off the line by Stanley Elbers.

Newcastle did have the ball in the net on 80 minutes after Mike Williamson's header across goal was tapped in by Shola Ameobi - only for the goal to be wrongly chalked off for offside.
