Fabio Capello shuffled into his seat and announced: "Andy Carroll is OK, he is fit and he will start."

And at that moment the reality that Carroll is deemed good enough for England started to sink in.

It marks an incredible two year period for the Gateshead lad who was in the reserve team just two years ago and could walk down Northumberland Street almost unrecognised.

Not now, and just seconds after confirming Carroll will start against France, a word of warning over his private life followed from the former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss.

Last season I had the audacity to suggest that Andy Carroll should have been on the plane to South Africa for the World Cup with England.

The suggestion was scoffed at, but those who did aren't scoffing now.

And when they were crying into their beer after the exit of England in the World Cup, they wouldn't have been scoffing then either.

My reasoning behind it, was that Carroll would offer England both something different as well as possibly providing the element of surprise after a season under the radar in the Championship.

Just 11 games into the Premier League campaign and Carroll has six goals and four assists, and is now on the brink of the England squad with Fabio Capello an interested specator at the Emirates to see him power home an old fashioned centre-forward's goal.

Judgement Day imminent on Tyneside

As if the Tyne-Wear derby wasn't big enough - Chris Hughton now goes into the clash with Sunderland on the back of a round speculation surrounding his position at St James' Park.

It's Judgement Day at St James' Park this Sunday as far as local pride is concerned but if a manager ever needed a win so much, it's Hughton.

Victory would change the entire mood of the city on Sunday after the Carling Cup defeat against Arsenal proved to be far from ideal in the build-up to the big one.

Whether Andy Carroll makes the full England squad or not for the forthcoming Euro 2012 Qualifier with Montenegro the fact that it is even up for serious discussion shows just how far the Geordie lad has come in a very short space of time.

Don't forget, it was only the season before last that Carroll was still very much a reserve team player and just two years ago that the Toon striker was changing in the second string dressing room at the club's Benton base.

It was Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton who decided to promote him to the first team dressing room around Christmas time of the 2008/09 season as injuries kicked in for the Magpies.

What's in a picture?

And so it was a case of another one for the scrapbook for Newcastle United at a windy day at the club's Benton base.

Or at least it was the annual photo call for the Magpies as it turned out to be a case of all smiles just a couple of days since the loss against Blackpool.

Perhaps more tellingly were broad smiles from Steven Taylor - who we understand remains on the transfer list until his contract is resolved - and Andy Carroll - who didn't look anything like a bloke who wants to sign for Spurs.

Jonas Gutierrez couldn't stop laughing as he struggled to keep his hair under control and as Danny Simpson, Danny Guthrie and Leon Best edge closer from injury problems, competition for places looks as good as it has been for a few seasons.
