Just another powder keg affair...

By Lee Ryder on Jan 13, 11 09:27 AM

I didn't agree with it, but somebody said to me the other day that Sunderland would have to better the 5-1 demolition at St James' Park back in October in order to fully claim the local bragging rights this week!

For me, a double over the Wearsiders wipes out memories of Stevenage and lays the foundations to really kick on for the rest of the season.

Sunderland have won just once in 30 years in this fixture and have a lot of catching up to on that score and there's no doubt Steve Bruce will be desperate for revenge on Sunday after his side were demoralised at St James' Park earlier in the season.

Tubthumping on Tyneside

Let's make no bones about, Newcastle United were lucky to be classed as second best at Broadhall Way.

Stevenage were simply miles ahead of United and outfought, outthought and overall out played the Magpies in Hertfordshire.

If it was the stuff of dreams for Stevenage, this was United's worst nightmare.

Steve Bruce
On the day that Newcastle United released a commemorative "Derby Demolition" mug, Steve Bruce promised the Magpies a frosty reception when the two teams line up their soldiers again for the battle at the Stadium of Light in January.

Bruce was still fuming by United's decision to blare out Daydream Believer at the end of the derby win.

He said: "Fortunately I didn't hear it because I was inside, but others did,

"'I hope we can repeat the same dosage when they come to our place.

"It was typical of their etiquette."

That is the pot calling the kettle that after the way Sunderland went on after the mere 2-1 win they scraped for the first time in three decades!

Kevin Nolan

As derbies go, this one will be right up there with the best of them.

The same pages of Geordie folklore that contain chapters for stars like Liam O'Brien, Emre, Scott Sellars, David Kelly, Andy O'Brien, Alan Shearer and Peter Beardsley to name but a few, Shola Ameobi updated his own section and was joined by super Kevin Nolan in a 5-1 win that well and truly put Sunderland in their place.

Chris Hughton's position had been put under the spotlight this week as questions and stick have not been in short supply.

The Norwich think tank

By Lee Ryder on Jul 26, 10 01:38 PM

I don't usually wake up on a Sunday morning, open the curtains and look out to the scene of the crime - but when it comes to the friendly with Norwich residing at the Carrow Road hotel overlooking the pitch, you don't really have much choice!

The pre-season friendly argument certainly came into play once again after Norwich but what are you expectations of such a contest?

At this stage of the season, expecting players to be at full throttle and a perfect performance is asking a bit much amidst an environment of multiple substitutions, water breaks and younger players coming through ranks is unrealistic.
