Nobody can blame Shay Given for quitting Newcastle United and there can't be too many Toon fans who will begrudge him his move to Manchester City.
If that's what he wants after 11 years surely he is entitled to make the decision to leave Toon.
And while he still had time left to run on his contract the fact that the direction of Newcastle United has clearly changed highlights some major problems on Tyneside.
Nobody can ever doubt that Shay Given has given everything since he signed for Newcastle United back in 1997 and after 11 years of service in between the posts for the Magpies even the most partisan Toon fans could accept it if he feels enough is enough.
With Arsenal leading the way to secure the services of Given and Spurs and Man City also keen on the Eire keeper it's fair to suggest that this pretty much looks like the end of the road for Given on Tyneside.
And with a statement from his lawyer Michael Kennedy which is a transfer request in all but name, Given's Toon days look numbered.
In a week when Joe Kinnear insisted that Given would not go and that a close and reliable source claimed he was happy to stick it out, it's clear that the last 24 hours have resulted in a change of heart for the Irishman.
Now just to add to the confusion Kinnear has re-iterated that Given is going nowhere! To read what Joe Kinnear has to say on Shay Given leaving Newcastle United click here .
Wayne Hennessey was the latest target to be linked with Newcastle United today but surely this is simply another case of plucking names out of thin air.
Hennessey if you didn't know (and let's be honest he's hardly a household name) is a promising young keeper with the mighty Wolves.
But don't go running out to get his name printed on the back of your top just yet.
So it looks like Shay Given is going to miss six weeks of Newcastle United's fight to maintain their place in the Premier League.
And the news today that he will miss a big stretch of the season must have left him in pieces.
Since signing for Newcastle in 1997 Given has pulled off all the stops but mentally he must be distraught that apart from the two great seasons under Sir Bobby Robson, the club have not matched his ambition nor that of the Toon Army.
Great North Run weekend it may well be but Newcastle United just weren't at the races at the City of Manchester Stadium.
OK, they did take a deserved lead against City but after Oba Martins had lifted the ball over Joe Hart they soon came off the track.
And just in case you've had enough of the same old cliches on the weekend of the North East's famous half marathon I'll get one more in before we can dissect the latest sorry defeat of the Magpies because let's be honest, they well and truly hit the wall against Sven Goran Eriksson's side!
